I Drive hotel attacks

No matter how careful you are you just couldnt stop this

"In both cases, the victims had propped open their room doors with the safety locks, making them easy prey for the robbers."

I think this quote from the Sentinel says all too clearly that the victims had left themselves open for the attacks.

I agree, though, a terrible thing to happen - I suspect the guys may well have been after mobile phones, passports and other valuables as well as just money :confused3

Not very nice :sad2:

Although it does say they had their doors propped open!

You should always keep your doors locked and the security chain on when in the room, and never open it if you are not expecting anyone.

If someone knocks and says they are from the hotel, phone reception to varify who they are before opening the door.

oops that is what you get when you get sidetracked before finishing the story. :headache:

Total muppets! :confused3

I certainly wouldn't want to down-play the seriousness of these attacks, but there is definitely an element of thoughtlessness about both sets of victims. However, having armed robbers in the area is a worry, and it will be interesting to see the police response to this. Orlando simply cannot afford to have any crime issues in the tourist areas, and I suspect there will be a very high police presence in the area for a while. It has been many years since there were any serious incidents on the I-Drive corridor and, happily, they stand out only because they are so unusual. Not a good scenario for either victim, though :sad1:

We once stayed at The Red Roof Inn, Kissimmee. It was about 1.30 in the morning and someone was trying to open our door, we luckily had the safety catch on. We phoned down to reception to dicover that they had given some newcomers a key to our room in error so that they could check out the quality of the rooms ....

Those poor people! I do hope they are ok. Iknow it was thoughtless to leave their doors ajar that way but it is totaly unacceptable behaviour on the part of those horrible robbers! The acts of violence were WAY over the top! It's bad enough to rob someone but there was no need for all the violence.:sad2:

I hope they are caught soon!

Does anyone know if there have ever been any cases like this (or any other trouble) at on-site hotels (either at Disney or Universal)?

Some of the Hotel complex's are sprawling affairs and must be very difficult to police.

When staying on-site at Universal we let the kids roam wherever they want because it just feel so safe....but things like this make you wonder.

the majority of these attacks are the "Motel" style accommodation, where the rooms open direct onto the car parks. At WDW and surrounding hotels, you have too much security to get through to make it quick and easy for the robbers. If staying offsite try and book a hotel where the rooms are accessed from internal corridors not direct from the car parks.

Thing is most people leave their common sense at home when they go on holiday abroad. These incidents will almost certainly happen to foreign tourists in the UK, wheras we would be more vigilant in our own country.

Personally I think that the tourism board in Orlando need to lean on the Police Depts and tighten up vigilance and catch these criminals. Crimes like these are on the increase at least since '05 in the I-Drive area . Hotels need better security too and of course guests need to to be aware of the risks and reminded of what measures to take against this type of criminals.

I'm so glad the hotels we choose to stay at have great Security staff and you need your guest ID to get in and out.I hope these people recover from their ordeals and those responsible get brought to justice quickly.
