Ugh! :(

Today is DS's 12 month check-up and that means more shots for the little guy. I HATE shots myself so the thought of having DS get them is just too much for me most of the time. I usually beg DH to come along so he can be the one to hold him while they actually stick him and then I swoop in immediately to console him. I could do it alone if I had to but I am a real wimp when it comes to needles. Thankfully DH will be there but that doesn't make it any easier. I think he is getting 4 different shots (DTaP, MMR, Polio and Hib/Hep B?) so that just makes it worse. They just have to keep sticking him over and over.

I can't wait for this day to be over. I just hope he doesn't have any bad side effects from the MMR. I have heard that one can really make them sick. :(

PD for you and Nathan, becka...*HUGS*

Becka - I know how you feel, Even now I cry when Caitlyn has to get shots. I think it upsets me more than her.

Be sure to give him a dose of Tylenol before you go. This will help with the soreness from the shots and help prevent a fever that could come with some of those vaccines.

DS just had his a few weeks ago. He got MMR, Polio Hep. and the Chicken Pox vaccine, a total of four shots. He took it pretty good. Sure he cried when the nurse started sticking him, but luckily we have the fastest nurse I've ever seen. It took her about 5 or 10 seconds to do all four shots. After they were all done he cried for about a minute and then we went by the toys and the stickers that the kids get for being good and he loves to pick out a sticker so he quickly forgot all about it :)

Shots are tough. WHat we use to do with the kids I would hold them so they were facing me and say little things in their ears and give them kisses while the nurse gave them the shot. They never saw it coming.and surprisingly we had little tears. Worked well at the younger ages!
now when we have to go I tell them the truth if they are getting a shot and that it would sting/hurt a little. We've never had a problem. BUt I also think the nurse who gives the shots is great!

I second the Tylenol before the visit. It can do a world of good.

Also, Nathan will NOT remember this Becka, as bad as it makes you feel, as soon as he is consoled, it is out of his mind.

I know none of this makes YOU feel better, but, it will be OK.

I hate "shot days" too, Becka. Hunter is 9 and I still won't do it. Shots don't bother me too, too bad but I can't stand the thought of them sticking her. So...I have never been. Somehow, I weasel out of "shot day". Hunter broke her pinkie toe the other night and they gave her 2 shots in her foot. Luckily, DH was home and took her to the ER to meet his ortho doctor buddy.
I'm am wimpy when it comes to shots and children.

I remember those days, I was EXACTLY like you.

Justin cut his forehead on the coffee table when he was 3 and Gene had to handle everything. I was a basket case. I couldn't even stand to be in the room while they stitched him up.

Has Nathan had his shots yet, Becka?

I hope it wasn't too traumatic for either one of you.

Well I did OK but I actually wasn't in the room. I turned around when they were about to get started because I didn't want to watch them actually stick him but then DH and the nurse told me to just go stand outside the door. I guess I looked pretty nervous. I was doing pretty good and then I heard him crying and then screaming! :( It turned out it was probably a good thing I was not there because the nurse did not hold his leg down enough and he kicked when the needle was still in his leg. Apparently that is a very bad thing and it ended up being much more painful for everyone involved.

He calmed down within 3-4 minutes after I started holding him. He didn't seem like he cared for the nurse very much but he did get two stickers for being so good - he wore his fish sticker but we are saving the airplane one for later.

Thankfully we are done with shots for at least 2 1/2 more months. We may even be done until he 18 month check-up but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the PD and good thoughts! :)

Poor Becka!!:( I remember those days all too well...... When my son was just a couple of months old , his 3 yr. old sister locked the nurse out of the room, yelling, "You're not gonna stick my baby brother with that nasty needle!!" Gee - that was probably about the last time she was nice to him!!:p

Glad to hear that Nathan (and you) calmed down!:D

Awww Becka I know how you feel. Even after 4 kids when they get their shots--especially Evan (3) or Connor (1) I cry every time.
You know its the best for them but seeing them cry is hard.
