The trips been booked for over a year. We leave Monday, spend the week at WDW, sail on Magic on Sat.

It's a big family trip, but it's the typical dysfunctional family from hell. Foks have already started fighting, sisters not talking to each other etc. etc.

It is going to be a Dysfunctional Diseny Disaster.

I think I may just stay home.

Hopefully the Disney magic will kick in and everyone will be having too much fun to fight and bicker. Most families, mine included, have occasional fights that flair up. Don't despair, go on your vacation, enjoy YOURSELF, and make the others responsible for thier own happiness!!!!

Its the typical hype for the anticipation of the vacation, plus you've got Christmas to deal with too. Hang in there! It'll all work out for the best! :)

Smile, it helps!

Don't stay home! Go and have fun. If they get on your nerves, just bite your tongue, go the other way and have your own fun! You definitely don't need people to get you down. Just do your own thing!

Read Delwife's report on the Trip Report Board -- she dealt with disfunctional A LOT.

Find yourself a lounge chair that no one in your group knows about and retreat there when you need to.

Sounds like you may have issues larger than a Disney vacation? I mean every family has squables, but if it gets that ugly to the point where you dread the trip...that may be a signal.

From someone from a BIG family with many dysfunctional members:

It's a big ship. There are lots of decks and lots of space. Two different meal seatings and three different rotations.

Make your own fun with those you have fun with.

Jim

"We put the "FUN" in disFUNctional

If they act up or bug you just pretend you don't know them, heck we are on the same cruise you can join my family, we're pretty disfunctional too but like Jim we are FUN.

Please don't stay home.

You go and enjoy yourself.

If others start to cause trouble, just excuse yourself, say you have to go to the bathroom, and then forget to come back.

It is a big ship, with lots of good hiding places. Let them try to find you!!!

I just want to second the points Jim and Ann made-- it's a big ship, and the greatest thing about taking a cruise with your family is that you can spend as much or as little time with them as you want to!

I cruised with a large group--two extended families of 13 people each--the summer before last. We all tended to "do our own thing" in various combinations during the day, and only got together at dinners, but if things get really uncomfortable you could even ask to change your dining time/rotation or just take advantage of the buffet/room service offerings.

But DO go! Just try to relax and ignore any bad behavior... You don't want to miss a great vacation!

You definantly have my sympathy!!! You should be able to avoid anyone you don't want to be around once on the ship. There is so much to do. I hope that you are able to enjoy your trip dispite your family problems.

We were dreading DH's parents finding out about our trip. We would have paid for them to come with us but they just aren't the type that will be happy about anything like that. Just jealous. Anyhow, they found out about the trip after we already left and they fussed at his brothers. They used it as one of their excuses for not coming to his brother's wedding the day we got off the ship.

don't tell them about the secret deck - 7 aft!! use that as your get away place... just remember it gets locked at night...

or... tell them to go out there and make sure they're locked out there!! Then you'll have the WHOLE ship to yourself!!

My crew and I will be there too...plus a lot of other DIS people...
come and join us.....we just plan on hanging out....having someone wait on us hand and foot for the whole week!!!!!

We've spent 3 wonderful weeks aboard the Magic.............. and never yet heard anyone fighting! That "pixie dust" really does have magical powers! Just head for secret deck 7 if you want peace and quiet.................. but DONT tell the family about it!Enjoy.:Pinkbounc

Just remember, as Robyn of Del'swife fame would tell you....

take three steps to the left and they will be gone!!!! :wave2: And when you need to come back together you were always there! No guilt!

Have a wonderful time and capture those moments when the peace is upon your family!:grouphug: Hold those moments close and throw away the bad ones:headache:!!!

Penny

I feel for you. Thank goodness WDW is so big you can get lost and have lots of fun on your own. Dont forget your room key!

Rence, it looks like you struck a chord with this thread. Everyone has a dysfunctional family. I am also going on the Magic with my family. We are dysfunctional. At the moment we are all speaking. I do not plan on that happening on the cruise. I am fully prepared to "take three steps to the left" and walk away from cranky people.

Bring sunglasses-dark ones-and pretend you are a Hollywood superstar, trying to remain anonymous-you'll have a ball!

Remember, you can pick your friends but not your family!!!
The older I get the more I realize that everyone has a dysfunctional family. If someone says they don't, they are in denial!!! Have a great trip. Do what you please, ignore the wacko's and all will turn out well.

I'll be on your cruise as well, and I've had a few days where I've had similar thoughts about not going. But I've always said my family put the "FUN" in dysFUNctional, so I'm going to go and have a good time. Hope you are able to as well.

Rence.
Go and enjoy!! How funny, our family also booked 1 year ago! and the reason was FAMILY, There seems to always be more disfunction during the holidays then normal, so after spending Xmas and New Years of 2001-2002 in WDW. we chose to stay home last year and enjoy our new home. WELL, by then end of the night on DEC. 25th we had booked our first cruise, there was so much drama about every little thing, that we didn't enjoy our new home or enjoy our children enjoying Xmas or the new home. So this Xmas we will be spending our time on the DSL. and we plan to make the best of our 4 days on the cruise and 5 days in Key West. I understand you are taking your family with you but I am told it is a BIG ship and one can with out a doubt get lost in WDW. you will find your own space. Peace to you during your vaction
