...if i get one will i have other expenses for the downloading of the purchases??????? or do i just USB it into my laptop and transfer......and.......is it worth it?

Do you have Wi-Fi at home? Or can you get it at McDonald's or Panera or the library? Then all you have to do is pay for books through Amazon, or download the free books Amazon offers.

Below from the amazon website:

Built-In Wi-Fi
Connect to Wi-Fi hotspots at home or on the road. Includes free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots across the U.S.

Books in 60 Seconds
With fast, free wireless delivery, you can start reading books in less than 60 seconds. No computer required.

My library has a consortium for downloading books in audio format. We are considering adding e-books.

I am disappointed to find out that our vendor (Overdrive) has e-books that are compatible with the Sony Reader, the Barnes and Noble Nook, and the
Borders Kobo. Not the Kindle!

Once you've bought it, the only other expense you absolutely would have is paying for books.

Optional but highly recommended - A cover for it and a light.

Optional and not necessary but if you want it to look pretty - A skin.

The new Kindle (or Kindle 3 as some are calling it) is available in two models.

The $139.00 model has wifi only. You will be able to download books anywhere that has a wifi connection. Your only cost will be the price of the book...unless you have to pay for the wifi connection.

The $189.00 model has wifi and 3G. You will be able to download books anywhere you can find a wifi signal or a 3G signal (same signal cell phones use). Again....your only cost is that associated with the book.

Hope that helps.

so.........i have a wireless router in my house.....will that do?????????

I gotta say, that new Kindle that practically fits in the palm of your hand is awfully cunning!

i feel pretty stupid right now...but, my guess is that i do not have the capability at my home to download books. so...what do people do? lurk around airports or their local coffee bar? i mean it seems kinda funny....a group hanging in the aisles of their local Borders putting books on their Kindles. or as Maingal says Mcdonalds............would you like a Big Mac sir?.......nope, just here to get my new novel.:rotfl2:would you like fries with that fiction sir???????:rotfl:.......anyway Amazon is sold out of the 139.00 one for now i hope to get it before Sept trip so i can look cool on the plane:)

Are you posting from home?

Are you using dial up service?

If you are posting from home using a wireless router you're probably using wifi, so you should be good.

There is no lurking needed. Most book downloads take less than 60 seconds and can be done anywhere there is a wifi signal.

If you get the 3G model, you can download anywhere there is a cell signal

If you get the wifi only model...you need a wifi signal.

You can also put books on your Kindle with a USB cord.....but it's not necessary.

dalt,

Get the Kindle. You won't be disappointed. I have the K2 3G and my daughter also has one. I'll be passing mine on to my wife and picking up the K3 wi-fi shortly. I don't think I'll miss the 3-G. You have to remember that the device will hold thousands of books. I have such a backlog of classics and freebies alone that I won't be wanting for reading material for quite some time. But as Kevin said, should you find yourself needing a new title, it's only a wi-fi hotspot and a few clicks away.

Update: My K3 wi-fi is on order :)

I've had a Kindle since October, 2009. I have the 3G version so I can download books anywhere. It's awesome! I love it!
I have a clip-on light and a case for it which cost extra. Some books are free, some are very inexpensive, and some are a bit more (I think $9.99 is the most I've ever paid for a book but you probably can pay more than that).
My DH's Kindle is registered under my name so any book that either of us purchases ends up on both Kindles for the same price. Very cool.
I read a lot and love, love, love books. I thought I wouldn't like reading them on the Kindle but it's fine. And the ability to have access to lots and lots of books at once means that I never have to worry about running out! :thumbsup2

I don't know if you would like the kindle, dalt, since few ebooks have the extended..............pauses you seem to like so much :lmao:

That said, I would actually recommend the nook (barnes and noble) over the kindle. It has the same pricing and selection from the over the air ebook store, plus the ability to read the standard "epub" file format that more and more libraries are using (see above), and which can be found online and such.

They're both great, but epub support is a fairly killer feature unless you intend to buy every book you read.

If you have a wi-fi network set up in your home, that is, a wireless router that can serve, say, a laptop computer... That is all that you need.

Failing that, you can always "piggyback" off of a neighbor's house and... Well no, I shouldn't say that....

If you are not wireless, you can always use a USB cable and download books directly from your computer. :wizard:

I just got a kindle and I love love it! It is the best thing ever! if you read a lot you wont regret it.

If you are considering the nook, you might want to be aware that Barnes and Noble (the company) is now available for purchase.

Yup...if you have enough money, you can now buy Barnes and Noble.

If you want a FREE preview of some of the Kindle's capabilities, you can always download the FREE PC version of the Kindle onto your computer. You can even download books for FREE. Search for it on amazon.com

Did I mention it's FREE?
