CLERMONT, Ky. (AP) - Employees at the Jim Beam bourbon distillery are getting sour over restrictions on bathroom breaks.

Workers on the bottling line are fuming about being limited to four breaks per 8 hour shift, only one of which can be unscheduled. Extra trips to the bathroom can result in reprimands. Workers with six violations can be fired.

The United Food and Commercial Workers local said some of the 100 affected employees have urinated on themselves because they were afraid to leave the line. Some wear protective undergarments and others have feigned illnesses to go home and avoid getting violations, said Jo Anne Kelley, president of the union local.

"It's a shame when you feel you have the need to go to the bathroom, but you ask yourself, 'Do I soil myself or do I protect my job?'" Kelley said.

The state has slapped the distiller with a citation. Jim Beam appealed; a hearing officer on Wednesday is expected to recommend to a review commission whether to sustain or overrule the citation. The commission's decision can be appealed in court.

Jim Beam Brands, headquartered in Deerfield, Ill., said its policy strikes a balance between employees' physical needs and the company's productivity needs. The company, which consulted a urologist before imposing the limits, said the time between breaks will generally be about two hours and never more than three.

"Our policy is fair and reasonable and it does respect the real needs that our employees have," said Jack Allen, human resources director at the Clermont plant, nestled between lush Kentucky hills about 25 miles south of Louisville.

The policy, which took effect in October, was instituted only at the Clermont plant because some workers abused the privilege of unlimited bathroom breaks, the company said.

Workers can be exempted with a doctor's note. So far, 29 have gotten waivers for medical necessity and can go as often as needed, Allen said.

Margaret Boone, who has worked at the distillery for 34 years, has one violation on her record.

"I've held it and it's miserable," said Boone, who has since obtained a medical waiver. "You can only concentrate on looking at the clock and wondering when break time is going to be."

That's rediculous. I thought that employers had to provide unlimited bathroom breaks without scheduling. I can tell you I'd have to get a doctor's note for sure. There's no way they could limit a pregnant lady to 4 trips per day.

I'd quit. I think the people who make these rules should be forced to drink 4 bottles of water in a short period then be told they're not allowed to go to the bathroom for the next 6 hours. That'll give them a *hint* of how some people with smaller bladders feel.

How sad for those who need it. My aunt owns a business and has a problem with an employee who takes frequent potty breaks....which are usually spent outside for a cigarette.

Well, I'm not much of a Bourbon drinker, but if I do have one I'll ask for Maker's Mark!

This rule was probably the idea of some executive who has his own restroom as part of his office. Whoever thought it up is an idiot

Could be worse..
My Mom has worked for a large multi state plastics company for 30 years. She has 1 10 minute break in the morning, one in the afternoon and 20 minutes for lunch. No air conditioning, 100 degree heat and more in font of plastic injection molds, no retirement and no pention. I'd love to know what a Unio would do to that place.
Oh, and after 30 years makes only $12 hour.

But they way they have it set up, there is never more than 2 hours between potty breaks. I go to the bathroom maybe 2 or 3 times a day at work - I can't imagine anyone needing to go more than that unless you have a medical problem. Just IMHO..

If I drink the advised 8-10 glasses of water a day, I go more than every two hours. There's only so much one body can hold.

Not to be gross here, but really, I've been called Leah-peeah before. I go ALOT! I can't help it. I drink water, and as they say, what goes in, must come out. I would not be able to limit that to certain times. I usually go about 5 - 6 times a day at work. I do not abuse my bathroom breaks... I go in, go, get out, but how many times I go can't be helped. That would realy irk me! But, I would go to the doc and get an excuse... that's the only way I would be able to handel it.

Now, if you'll excuse me... I have to, ah..... go! :)

Well, they are probably not drinking tons of water if they are on an asssembly line. Where I work we get 1 half hour lunch and 2 10 minute breaks for an 8 1/2 shift. But if we really have to use the rest room, we would never be told no. If they ever caught anyone taking a smoke break, instead of using the rest room there would probably be some sort of disciplinary action taken.
With a person who has a normal bladder and if they are not drinking lots of water, 2 hours between breaks seems ok. BUT that's not for everyone, not every one can pee exactly every 2 hours!

When I worked at Meijer, I couldn't take a restroom break unless I clocked out. There was a maximum of one break per four hour period.

Now I have five minutes between classes, but no time to stop at the restroom. I have to travel from one class to another and it takes time to pack up and set up. And don't even think of leaving the students alone.....

I compromise. I get my recommended daily water intake, but I don't start drinking until around 1:00. Not really smart when the classrooms are 80 degrees, though.
