I really don't get the mourning for Prince he was a singer, he killed himself by taking pills and yet people are so upset over his death. I don't get the IDOL worship for singers and actors. I would rather honor the Military and all first responders who are killed because of the Job they do not because they Sang a song. I guess I am just disgusted by the hero worship for these people who get a 4 or 5 page thread and a post on a Cop who was murdered in the line of Duty gets maybe a page or 2 response. It really makes me question some people's values and morals.
People are all different and who people are affected by is so diverse. Early in our marriage, we were on vacation and heard Harry Chapin was killed in a car accident. He wasn't a huge icon, idol or anyone of big name. However, my DH loved his music and it played a big part in our dating/marriage. We saw him in concert as well. We didn't cry but we were stunned and saddened.
Princess Diana was another death that deeply affected me and so many others. I am sure there were some that thought that was crazy as well. Was it wrong? No, not all.
For me, the loss of Barbaro - the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, was so profound. I cried and mourned him and do not feel ashamed or embarrassed at all. I heard many comments...he was an animal, you never saw him, or whatever.
The coroner ruled it was not a suicide.
This. The end.But people have the right to be sad over what makes them sad.

If everyone's opinion counts, then so does Tozzie's. It's always ironic when people say don't be judgmental all the while judging the OP. It's impossible to be nonjudgmental.

Not really. Why do I care who a stranger on the internet mourns for? Clearly Tozzie has an invested interest in law enforcement. I don't. But, I don't judge Tozzie for what he/she cares about. It's impossible to be nonjudgmental.

I think it's just semantics. Who hasn't heard someone say that someone who smokes a lot or drinks to excess is "killing themselves." Now, if a long time smoker dies of a lung ailment it's not appropriate to come out and say to anyone expressing grief "he killed himself," but it does sort of go unspoken. Now there may be a time later when people are discussing the dangers of smoking where one could say something like, "he shortened his life by smoking" and it's not nearly as insensitive and might be a valid point depending on the context. I think people get more indignant when someone accidentally overdoses. However, that hasn't been confirmed as the case here and wouldn't really change how most people feel about his death even if that does prove to be the cause of death after the fact. And, I agree. Saying he "killed himself" is just wrong. It was accidental.
And, the reason for the "longer thread" is obvious. He affected and touched many more lives. It's that way with ANY celebrity...we all feel (rightly or wrongly) that we "know" them. Average Joe Cop? No Average human being walking the street? No. That's just the way it is.
