Fog rolls away, the Radisson, present time, comes back into view...
Its after 8 now, I go to get DD up
I sit next to her and scratch her back
if nothing else, it gets her smiling.
Slowly she wakes up and shes in a good mood.. very smiley! I go to make her hot cocoa (a morning ritual since last year at AKL)
and she gets her morning stuff done. We go down and I get my morning fix at Starbucks
A fairly early start.. Im satisfied.
This day was BEAUTIFUL!!! The skies so blue with spots of cirrus clouds here and there.. I was hoping it would stay this way. And, it wasnt too hot.. at least not yet. It was a wonderful day for the beach!
So we know the way and we know the speed limit, and guess what? We got to the signs (the close ones) for Coco Beach in just over 40 minutes.. of course we veered the other way towards the Kennedy Space Center signs. We had no problem finding the Astronauts museum. I'd heard it was 3 miles down the road from the Space Center
The parking lot looks kind of empty. But its now after 10 so Im thinking it either opens really late or its really boring and no one wants to go there!
Its opened.. it doesnt look that impressive. It was very strange
The KSC CM seemed to be giving these people ahead of us a hard time. She didnt allow them in.. and they finally left. I didnt really hear what she was saying.. just something about the tickets. So I went to hand her our tickets hoping shed notice the date and its good for 2 days, but she just waved them away smiling, saying go right in. I must have looked confused because she pointed to the turnstile.. umm.. ok. I figured out we go through there, but she dont wanna see the tickets? I just smiled, said thank you
and we went in.
Taking the initial look around.. I really didnt think my DD would like it here
its a museum
and it looks like a museum. There were only few other people in there besides us. She didnt say anything.. and we spend some time at the displays. She thought the different space craft were pretty neat. There was a space suit that she kept trying to see if there was anyone in there.
Then there was this command center console taken from mission control. It said it was THE command center console that was actually used in the Gemini (and I believe) Apollo missions. And, you can sit at it (most everything else was blocked by plexiglass) and listen on the telephone like receiver (think old-time dial phone with separate receiver). The computer monitor was replaced with an interactive monitor where you can listen to actual conversations between Mission Control and the Gemini/Apollo mission (you choose by touching the screen). Now I must not know my DD too well because I would have never thought this would be something she would like. But she must have sat there for a good 25-30 minutes listening to those conversations! She kept saying mommy listen to this... I was so happy with the interest she took in the museum.
There is one room where they have biography tributes to every astronaut in huge plexiglass (or glass) etchings. They were really nice. I had told DD about Christa Mccullough, and together we searched for her huge glass biography etching
and we couldnt find it. As a matter of fact, I couldnt find anything about her there, and I dont remember seeing anything about her the day before at KSC. So I approach the KSC CM and asked
and as I did, 2 women overheard me ask and turned to the CM and said.. Yea.. where IS her display... at least I was polite. I thought those 2 women were gonna smack the poor CM when he said we get asked that all the time, we dont have one of her because she was not an astronaut. I almost laughed because after he saw the look on those womens faces, he actually took a step back. I thanked him, and listened as I turned away, to the women tell him of course she was !, and, how can he say that!.. like it was his fault! Cause Im sure when the executive KSC people were building those tributes they were sure to get input from the barely above minimum wage CMs.
Weve been there about an hour now. Its still not very crowded, though not as empty as when we first came. DD was a bit ahead of me, and I saw her eyes light up. No need to tell me where that door led to
. The simulation room!
Its not very big.. and not as space-like as I thought it would be. There werent many simulations to experience, but DD enjoyed what there was.
What I would call the main one.. its called a gyrosomething or other (yes, thats the technical name!).. was closed down. Its the only one Id ever seen on TV.. the large hamster exercise ball looking thing where you flip around in circles and need to try to level yourself out. Some one got hurt on it and it had been closed ever since.
So the first thing she wants to go on is the g-force simulator. There arent many people on the line, maybe 8-10, but since it only fits 2 people at a time (one in each side), theres a bit of a wait. She wants to wait for THAT.. not go to anything else that doesnt have a wait (it was the only ride that had a wait) But ok. It seemed her style
the lets-see-how-much-you-can-take-of-this-before-you-puke.. kind of ride.
This ride is enclosed in a large plexiglass box (Im sure KSC gets bulk rate on plexi-glass). The CM leaves the room and controls the simulator from the outside. People coming out had mixed looks.. some looked happy.. some looked stunned
some looked, well, lime-green. A child that was in the simulator just before DD pushed the panic button located in each capsule that stops the ride. He didnt look happy when he came out. So now its DDs turn and I watch them lock my baby into this very confining looking box
and imprison another similar-aged child in the other side. CM checks the locks, and leaves the room.. and the ride starts. And I watch it start to spin. Im a bit anxious and wait for one or the other hit the panic button. Nope.. it spins and spins
now its rising up off the floor
weeeeee
I guess. I thought since this is supposed to be compared to, or maybe the same, of what astronauts experience, that it may be worse than Mission Space (which DDs loves). It didnt look too bad, but I dont know what MS looks like from the outside either.
I was standing next to the solemn looking CM and tried to make small talk. I said, have you ever left for a break and forgotten there were people spinning around in there? hehe. She never met my eyes.. just kind of looked off towards the simulator and quietly said yea, once. She didnt even smile, but I still try to keep some hope she was only kidding.
The ride seems to last unusually long, but it finally slows down and stops. CM unlocks the the doors and frees the captive children and my DD pops out all smiles! Whew!
She said she really liked it, but it wasnt as intense as Mission Space.
Next we went to the Mars Rover.. which looked pretty tame. Large bullet-shaped, spacey looking vehicle that sat about 5 people in a row, and about 4 rows. There was no line there because there werent 20 people in the place. It may have looked tame, but it was BuMpY as heck! Nauseating I thought
DD thought so too. That was the last time for that. Then she tried the moon walk wrap around your butt bungee jumping thing (I didnt get pics and thats the best I can explain it).
and then back to the g-force simulator. We did some hands on stuff.. then back to the g-force simulator. A bit more hands on stuff, gift shop (2-Tshirts, 3 bags of magnetic rocks, 1 gel grip pen, 1- astronaut pen and other little stuff I cant remember) , then we left, eager to get to the beach.
We saw this little guy on the way to the car
he had lots of family around too!
All in all, a nice visit. We had a better time there than at the Space Center.
It was only about 15 minutes or so to the beach. We went through a drive-through Wendys for frascata sandwiches to eat along the way. We went down the same street and parked near the same place we did the say before. The beach was a bit more crowded than the day before, but still pretty empty.
We stayed at the beach pretty late
we had a great time, even if DD wouldnt go in very far.
We didnt get back to the resort until about 9:00 or so. I dont even remember what we ate that night. DD wanted to go in the pool and that was ok with me. Id had an easy day.
So we get to the pool area
this is the free form NON heated pool, so mommy finds a seat (I dont do non-heated pools!)
and Nikki grabs her boogie board and gets right in the water.
Im sitting next to a chatty woman.. seems nice, if not a bit tipsy. But seeing her enjoying a drink brought to mind, Hey! I got those free drink coupons.. lets see what I can get! I make sure I can keep DD in site while I go to the poolside bar.. and I wave like an idiot every 10ft or so to be sure she sees me. You know.. the yoohoo.. Im over here wave
. So DD waves back and I do mime language
to tell her where Im going
. In case the yoohoo wave wasnt making me look dumb enough.
So I get to the bar and ask the bartender what drinks the coupon is good for, and to my surprise he says anything you want.. oooohhh.. ahhhh.. I think. And I look at all the yummy choices. I saw one say something about Grey Goose and Chambord and Coconut & Cranberry juices and that was enough for me to say.. Ill take that! Well let me tell you.. "That" was good!!
I give the bartender a $2 tip ecstatic that I have more of these coupons! I go back to my spot doing the wave
to DD to make sure she sees Im going back to my seat. I get all comfy and then my neighbor Tipsy strikes up more conversation. We chat a bit, but Tipsy was getting Smash-eed.. so it was mostly onesided. On her side. I only half listened and watched DD go on the slide, under the waterfall
just swim around and have a great time. After Tipsy had gotten up and returned for more drinks a few too many times, I decided to try and make a polite get away.
I call DD over, first with the
wave, followed up with a
wave. So DD comes over and Tipsey slurrs what a beautful girl she is. DD didn't look too complimented, or maybe she just had a hard time understanding the JackDanielnese Tipsy was speaking. I told DD I was ready to move to the heated pool so I could take a swim. Since it's on the other side of the pool 'complex' I was confident that Tipsey didn't have the mobility and balance it took to navigate that distance. I was right.
On the way over to "the other side" I grabbed another one of those yummy fruity drinks. So, even if the water wasn't warm enough for me, maybe I wouldn't notice it so much.
Daddy called soon after to see why DD hadn't called, so she got to say goodnight to the critters (and him)...
We didn't go up to the room until almost midnight! DD showered, I braided, tucked her in bed, then showered myself.
Long day.. it'll be a late start the next morning.
End of Day 3
