I do not want to dress up for formal night

That has got to be the WEAKEST excuse I have ever heard. You are essentially saying that just because you are on vacation, you don't have to obey any rules (and yes, I know, the dress code is a "suggestion"). I swore I wasn't going to get in this discussion, but that statement is just such a weak excuse it amazes me.

DrCavin -

it's just about ready .... you like extra butter???? :confused3 :teeth:

Wog, you have got to try out the new Jolly Time Magic Marshmallow pop corn. Tastes delicious and sweetens these posts up nicely.

At this very moment I am having a conversation with DH on the phone about this I want him to wear a tux and he does'nt want too! :confused3 It looks like we are comprising and he going to wear a dark suit. But I wil still try to talk him into it! :rotfl:

Pass the popcorn for this thread!!!!!!!!! Personally I dont care what others wear. Although I personally would dress up, but if others dont want to, then that is their issue and they can deal with it. I am going on my first 4 day cruise and they dont have a formal night. I am worrying more about the weather then clothes right now.... HURRICANE DENNIS!!!!!!!!!! I am leaving for disneyworld on saturday and cruising on thursday the 14th. Wish us luck with the weather!!!!!!!!!

My DH and I do not want to dress up formally for dinner either. Out of respect for the other cruisers, we plan on doing buffets those nights. No biggie - we just like to be in comfy clothes.

I'm sure we'll have fun at Topsiders :goodvibes

I was just on the 6/16/05 Wonder (3 day) and there was a formal night. I didn't see many cruisers in formal wear, though. Most wore casual dress.

"For my real $0.02, I am planning on wearing a tux to formal night, and a tie with my dress shirt on semi-formal night. That's the dress code, so you should respect it, regardless if you're on vacation or not. If you don't like it, don't cruise or go to Topsiders/BBB."

I guess make it $.04. I love these threads, too. I wonder if some of the folks who don't wish to comply with the dress code (that is advertised in all the sales literature so every guest knows in advance what is requested) also chose to wear open collars or at least no jacket when they got married. After all, it was their wedding, why should they dress up? Do these same folks also smoke in their staterooms and in the dining rooms--after all, its their vacation, why shouldn't they smoke? There are plenty of vacation choices, including Disney vacations and including DCL Bahamas cruises that don't have formal dress requirements, just pick one and have a great time. If you choose a destination whose dining room has a formal dress code on a certain night (jackets everynight at many a fine restaurant/resort in America, the Greenbrier or many (all?) Ritz Carltons come to mind), the respectful thing is to comply with the posted dress code. Would you try to break the dress code in those resorts? Some resorts are casual all the time--but you didn't book that vacation, and yet you want to bring that dress code to DCL. Some resorts are nudist--you didn't book that vacation either, but hopefully you aren't going to insist that since it is your vacation, you should dress--or NOT dress--in that manner if you so desire.

I've always brought my tux for cruise formal nights, a jacket and tie or suit for semi-formal night, and a jacket and mickey mouse tie to palo. Didn't ruin my vacation--made it special to have an occasion to dress up. You can rent a tux of very good quality and have it waiting in your stateroom when you arrive so the issue of no room in luggage is fixable.

Sometimes its fun when the popcorn is a little burnt!

OK, every one has their popcorn and drink. Time for a little stand-up to warm up the audience.

"When your wife says 'Honey, you look good in a suit', what does she really mean? Let's face it, suits are all pretty much the same. Have you ever walked into room where all the women were wearing the same dress? If they won't do it, why should we? The idea that men look good in suits is a myth perpetrated by women. The truth is that men all look the same in suits. But, hey, for half of us, that's an improvement! When your wife tells you that you look good in a suit, she's telling you which half you belong to. Think about it."

(Don't worry. I'm keeping my day job. And I'll wear a suit to formal night, if I ever go on a 7-night. I know which half I belong to.)

Actually, we were on a 4 night cruise this past January and they attempted to have a formal night. We were on the Magic though and it was a special sailing to get the ship back into the 7 night sync after the holidays. When the Navigators were distributed with "formal night" on them, alot of cruisers went to guest services because they hadn't packed anything formal to wear. There was an announcement made that casual attire was fine, but the crew would dress in their formal uniforms.

Normally I didn't think the 3/4 day had them... Wonder why DCL would even put that in the Nav's without saying casual is also fine.. sometimes they make me wonder who is writing those navigators...

OK, back to my popcorn *hehe

I don't like popcorn ... so I'll bring along some candy.

If I correctly recall, the formal and semi-formal attire were just suggestions - whereas a Jacket was required in Palo (but I believe this has changed). Since it is not a requirement, if someone doesn't want to wear a tux, then they don't have to ... and they shouldn't be relegated to the buffet and have to forgo the lobster just because someone else may be offended by their lack of formal attire. Personally, I like to dress up. My DH doesn't own a tux so he just wears a dark suit. But if the table next to me is dressed in khaki pants and a golf shirt, why should "I" be offended by it? To each his own.

I haven't read the other posts - but that's what I wear on Formal Night to dinner. Oh yea the best part is that I wear sandals to dinner too! (Yes, on Formal and Semi Formal Nights!!)

remember ....

The Tuxes :snooty: look down upon the suits
The Suits look down upon the sport coats
The Sport Coats look down upon the dress shirts
The Dress Shirts look down upon the polo shirts
The Polo Shirts look down upon the tee shirts
The Tee Shirts look down upon the tank tops
The Tank Tops look down upon the swimming suits

and so it goes:)

and everyone looks down on me because I'm wearing sandals and dark socks :earseek: but at least I'm NOT wearing shorts to dinner

OK, so I went back and read the entire thread.

First off, what's with all of the popcorn:confused: This thread deserves the best and that's s'mores!!:tongue:

Now for some observations...
Sorry to anyone he might have upset. He did look rather funny all dressed up with tennis shoes on.
My Kind Of Guy. DS usually wears tennis shoes (AKA sneakers in some parts of the country - BTW (and OT) why call it "SODA" when it's proper name is "POP" :confused3 ) to dinner. Granted we try to get him black ones with minimal "decoration" (you know the white "shoosh" or "3 strips", etc). No one knows that he's not wearing dress shoes. And his feet are better dressed than dear OLD dads (seems that I'm aging at 4 times the speed of time these days).

I wonder if some of the folks who don't wish to comply with the dress code (that is advertised in all the sales literature so every guest knows in advance what is requested)
Logan, you know after our upcomming cruise I'll be requiring your professional services BUT ... we're on the 14 night repo cruise in August and all we know for sure is that there will be 14 dinners on board the ship. Yea, the "guniea pig repo" :rotfl: in May had a formal and a couple of semi formal nights (or maybe it's the other way around). They even had a pirate night. About 6 weeks to go and can you tell me what our theme nights are going do be? Didn't think so. :bitelip:

The truth is that men all look the same in suits. But, hey, for half of us, that's an improvement! When your wife tells you that you look good in a suit, she's telling you which half you belong to. Think about it."
I think you're off by about 80%. I make the "improvement" to be closer to 90% of us look better "spiffed up" (and uncomfortable as heck) in suits. Some of us on the other hand don't need the suit because it won't help!! :earseek: Yea, unfortunatly I fall into that category of being helpless. OK for the revalation of the year... I'm going to rent a tux for the repo cruise (yes, that Mr. Shirt, Tie, Slacks and SANDALS in a tux - and it was my idea :faint: ). To hit home my point DW said that I should loose another 20 pounds before the cruise (that's about 9 kilos for our friends in Europe), but DD thinks that I'll look like a Prince :love: (aren't daughters grand!!). Which leads me back to needing Logans services after the cruise :guilty: No I won't really be needing Logan's services :love2: DW does love me (most of the time)

There are so many posts about cruisers wearing casual clothes to formal night, how it's their choice and people shouldn't care what they're wearing, etc. I'd like to share our formal night experience.

We sailed on the Magic last year with our neighbors. Weeks before the date, they called and asked if we were going to 'dress up,' for formal night. We said we were. (We didn't elaborate. Face it, we're all more vocal on these boards than we'd be in person. LOL!) They said they weren't as 'they go to many office parties during the year and don't want to have to', yada, yada. Fast forward to formal night. We met in the atrium before dinner. Our DH neighbor (dressed in a polo and khakies) saw my DH arrive in his tux and then he remarked sarcastically, 'you're kidding. You actually rented a TUX?' (DH didn't even tell him he actually bought it for this and future cruises.) My DH sheepishly said 'yeah, we wanted to have pictures taken. We don't mind.' Later at dinner our neighbor was taking pictures and jokingly told my DH, "I'm going to send copies to everyone in the neighborhood of you actually dressed up.' At this point, he was starting to sound as if he was a smart-aleck high-schooler. The icing on the cake was when his own son showed up for dinner the next night barefoot, and the head server sent him out to put shoes on.

People are right when they comment that it shouldn't matter 'what other people are wearing.' ;)

definitely sneakers and some around here (especially the older generation) call it tonic. :teeth: to me it's soda :teeth:

Ok Dr Calvin....bad parent...bad parent....LOL not sure who is one or if anyone is on this board, but thought I would let you break out the popcorn again.

I will not dress for formal night;
I will not dress with a light.

In my best Dr. Seuss tribute:

I will not dress on the boat;
I will not dress while it floats.

I will not dress with coat and tie;
I will not dress and that's no lie.

I will not dress with a friend;
I will not dress in the wind.

I tell you strong and tell you right;
I will not dress for formal night.

I told him "you should give it a try;"
Spiff on up and don't be shy.

Button your collar and snap your links;
You can wear black, blue or even pink.

He said he would try just this once,
but "I'm convinced I will look like a dunce."

He put on his shirt, white and wrinkle-free;
He donned his jacket and said "follow me."

We dined like kings and queens in our castle
and he said "wow, this wasn't such a hassle."

So when you say "I won't dress for formal night,"
Try, try and like it you just might.

Can you tell I'm bored right now? ;)

Yes you are bored HeelMD...but will you please make some fresh popcorn with butter please.
