Yay! I ordered my Kindle this morning! Thanks to everyone who gave their opinions and helped me decide. I rec'd my $72 trade-in credit for one of my old college textbooks this morning and ordered the $114 Kindle.

So it only cost about $41!!! Great deal huh?!?

Thanks guys!!

You can trade in old college textbooks? That's a great price! :goodvibes

Congrats on your purchase! Great deal.

I have been curious about the Kindle with "special offers". Please come back and let us know how you like it and how you feel about whether the special offers are inconsequential or annoying.

:yay: :cool1: Great deal!! Congrats! I love my Kindle - SO easy to read for long periods of time - such as long car rides to Disney!

I jumped but the other way! I bought the Nook Color & LOVE it. I wanted more than a Kindle but couldn't afford an iPad. This is the best of both worlds.

Congrats on your purchase! Great deal.

I have been curious about the Kindle with "special offers". Please come back and let us know how you like it and how you feel about whether the special offers are inconsequential or annoying.

I bought a Kindle with Special Offers and it was delivered last week. There are two components to this Kindle: ads and special offers.

The ads replace the original screensavers that were the faces of different authors, etc. Now you have a full page ad for VISA, or Olay products, or Buick. They are in black and white and they do take up the full screen. As soon as you "wake" your Kindle, they disappear. If you are on your "Home" screen they reappear at the bottom as a small banner ad.

To my mind, they are unobtrusive. If I pick up my Kindle to use it, I immediately wake it and unless I stay on my Home page for an extended period of time, I move to the screen I want and the banner ad disappears, too. The ads are NEVER in or on any page of a book you are reading or on any of the pages if you are shopping in the Kindle store.

The Special Offers are a different component, although they also show up as black and white screensavers. They appear automatically even if you do not have your wifi turned on - when I woke up this morning a new offer was the screensaver on my Kindle.

So far I have taken advantage of three offers.

1. Buy a book from a pre-approved list of 48 titles and get a $10 credit to your Amazon account. I bought a novel for $8.93 and received a $10 credit - so I "made" $1.07. Some books in the offer were cheaper - I believe Water for Elephants was about $5, so you could have made $5 on the offer.

2. Spend $10, get a $20 Amazon gift certificate. This was a no-brainer for me!!

3. Today's offer is an album from the Amazon MP3 store for one dollar. I've ordered the email that allows me to go to the link for this offer and I'll see what album I might like. I am not a customer of the Amazon music store but for a buck I can buy something I am sure.

So that's my experience so far. I have had Kindles since the original version - I have a Kindle 1, Kindle 2, original and Graphite Kindle DXs, and the new Kindle wifi only and now wifi with Special Offers. lol does that make 6? Two I have passed down to my daughters, and I am getting ready to sell the newest Kindle wifi only since I bought the Special Offers one to replace it. I also like having a spare to loan to friends or take on a vacation.

Welcome to the addiction :)

Too bad, the Nook Color is where it is at for Ereaders.

Kindle is old school at this point

Not true.. I'll admit, the Nook color is pretty to look at, but the Kindle is not backlit, and it's much easier on my eyes to read for long periods.

I agree with this....
Not for everyone, I prefer an e-reader that isn't backlit.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle. I enjoyed mine so much I sent one to my husband while he was in Iraq this last time. I wasn't sure how he would feel, but he loves it too and uses his probably more than I use mine.

I have no problem with my nook color but I know some people do. I look at a computer screen all day as it is so reading the NC does not bother me as my eyes are already used to it.
Both have their pros and cons.

Congrats OP  that is a great price.
Happy reading :goodvibes

I love my kindle! I didnt get a nook because screen like that are hard on your eyes after a while. The kindle i can read for hours with NO issues.

Too bad you are a broken record trying to pass off your opinion as fact over and over and over again.

It's very tiresome. :sad2:

Hey OP, enjoy!!!! :cheer2:

congrats :)
I think that Kindle Special Offers looks like a pretty tempting deal for a low cost eReader. I saw one in the ATT store yesterday and the ads were not intrusive at all. I think you'll enjoy it.

In Industry news - Barnes and Noble is slated to announce Nook 2 in about 3 weeks and rumors are it might be a Mirasol color eInk screen. No word on the price. Amazon will likely announce an Android tablet to work in conjunction with their Amazon App market by early fall and unless Barnes and Noble vastly improves their nook color App offerings they are going to get blown out of the water there.

My husband and I just bought a second kindle. Now my husband has the old one with 3G and I have the new wifi only one. I didn't get the special offers because I just didn't want to deal with the adds. Also we got it at Target so between my DH's discount and our target card we got a pretty nice discount so the difference in price wasn't really worth it.

I just ordered my Nook for a combo birthday/ Mom's day present! I got a nook b/c my MIL has a nook color and we want to be able to lend back and forth. I got the non-color verson as a refurb on overstock for $80. I paid $13 for a 2 year replacment plan that also covers accidental damage. I didn't go with the color because I was bothered by the glare in bright light and I just couldn't justify the $250 price tag.

Wow! I have both the Nook Color and a Kindle 2 and also the latest Kindle (w/o the special offers/ads) and have to say that I love my Kindle way more than the Nook Color. That probably will be my first and last Nook.. Much, much prefer my Kindle, and my iPad 2 over the Nook Color.
