I did it! (Kindle)

Love my Kindle too

I use it because it's not backlit. I want to avoid reading another computer screen, but don't like the bulkiness of a book. I have fibromyalgia and books can get heavy to hold, plus my eyes tire easily so I just change the font to fit my mood.

No nook for me!

Tell me about this college text book trade in thing?

I just ordered my Nook for a combo birthday/ Mom's day present! I got a nook b/c my MIL has a nook color and we want to be able to lend back and forth. I got the non-color verson as a refurb on overstock for $80. I paid $13 for a 2 year replacment plan that also covers accidental damage. I didn't go with the color because I was bothered by the glare in bright light and I just couldn't justify the $250 price tag.

Birthday and Mother's Day combo gift- I felt really bad wanting yet another new electronic toy (got an Ipod touch for Xmas), but DH said if thats what you want, go for it! DD21 bought me the case and I just loaded some ebooks I had bought previously, so I am jam packed with books and ready to read. Only thing I am not thrilled about so far is that it is heavier than I expected, and I haven't gotten comfortable with the browser yet. When I think about how heavy that many books would be, I feel a lot better. Does anyone know where I can get some older, less expensive books from? For example, I'd like to read Bridget Jones Diary again, but don't want to pay 13 for it (since I can get a hard copy for a few dollars).

For all of you Kindle experts. I am thinking about buying the $114 version. I don't have a wireless network set up at home. Can I buy the books on my computer and load them to the Kindle from the computer?

TIA

Too bad, the Nook Color is where it is at for Ereaders.

Kindle is old school at this point

Seriously? That's definitely debatable.

The OP stated that she researched before making her purchase and obviously she decided the kindle was the best choice for her.

So that's my experience so far. I have had Kindles since the original version - I have a Kindle 1, Kindle 2, original and Graphite Kindle DXs, and the new Kindle wifi only and now wifi with Special Offers. lol does that make 6? Two I have passed down to my daughters, and I am getting ready to sell the newest Kindle wifi only since I bought the Special Offers one to replace it. I also like having a spare to loan to friends or take on a vacation.

Thanks for sharing your experience, very helpful.

I hadn't even thought about having an extra around, but I'm really liking that idea. I think the kindle with offers just might be the perfect choice.

Yes, all Kindles come with a USB cord which allows transfer from computer to Kindle. In fact, I do 99.9% of my book shopping on my computer like that. It's easier for me than the eReader screens.

I am not sure if that is a lendable title or not, but if you join booklending.com you can borrow and lend lots of books for free. I have loaned out lots on there and have received several new release loans and it works really well.

Thanks for this info! I don't have Wi-fi, either, and was wondering the same thing. I thought I was going to have to go with the pricier version, but it looks like from your answer, I can go with the lower one. :yay:

I do most of my book shopping on the computer, as well. My DD away at college is on my account and her visa card is the default one click payment method. This allows her to buy books when she wishes out of her own funds. When I buy books that aren't free, I change the default credit card to my own and make my purchases before switching it back to hers. I am adding my mother to my account, as well, but her Kindle will be pre-loaded with all the books we've already purchased. It should keep her in reading material this summer at the lake! :thumbsup2

Can anyone tell me if there is a key on the bottom to turn the pages, or are they just on the side.

I know its a strange question, but I'm so used to my Sony that I've established a comfy reading position in bed and need a bottom page turn button

If you change the page orientation that would in effect put the page turning buttons on the bottom (though you'd be holding it sideways so I'm not sure if that would work for your comfy reading position).

I bought a Kindle with Special Offers and it was delivered last week. There are two components to this Kindle: ads and special offers.

The ads replace the original screensavers that were the faces of different authors, etc. Now you have a full page ad for VISA, or Olay products, or Buick. They are in black and white and they do take up the full screen. As soon as you "wake" your Kindle, they disappear. If you are on your "Home" screen they reappear at the bottom as a small banner ad.

To my mind, they are unobtrusive. If I pick up my Kindle to use it, I immediately wake it and unless I stay on my Home page for an extended period of time, I move to the screen I want and the banner ad disappears, too. The ads are NEVER in or on any page of a book you are reading or on any of the pages if you are shopping in the Kindle store.

The Special Offers are a different component, although they also show up as black and white screensavers. They appear automatically even if you do not have your wifi turned on - when I woke up this morning a new offer was the screensaver on my Kindle.

So far I have taken advantage of three offers.

1. Buy a book from a pre-approved list of 48 titles and get a $10 credit to your Amazon account. I bought a novel for $8.93 and received a $10 credit - so I "made" $1.07. Some books in the offer were cheaper - I believe Water for Elephants was about $5, so you could have made $5 on the offer.

2. Spend $10, get a $20 Amazon gift certificate. This was a no-brainer for me!!

3. Today's offer is an album from the Amazon MP3 store for one dollar. I've ordered the email that allows me to go to the link for this offer and I'll see what album I might like. I am not a customer of the Amazon music store but for a buck I can buy something I am sure.

That sounds wonderful! I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Kindle. :yay: Where do you find out about these great Amazon offers?

They are automatically sent to you on the Kindle. To take advantage of one, you click a link and an email is sent to you. Follow the link in the email and you'll have instructions to get the offer.

Thanks for the link. I just got a few new FREE books. :thumbsup2

Glad it was helpful! I stumbled across it when I was looking stuff up trying to talk myself into buying the kindle. I have found a lot of great deals.

Will the 3G option let you connect to all of the internet or only a few select sites??

Thank You,
Lori

I so want this Kindle. I just sold a couple of my textbooks to Amazon for $55 (waiting for the credit to show up in my acct.). DH says I don't need it but I so want it! :worship:Hmmm...what else can I sell to justify this purchase. My next payday is the 20th (shh...don't remind hubby-think he'll notice if I get it.):rotfl:

I LOVE my Kindle!

I bought my father the Nook Color for his birthday and he likes me Kindle better too!

I hate paying full price for anything, but I paid $250 for my Kindle 2. Worth every cent!

I used it to email my daughter while I was in the middle of the Caribbean on a cruise. It cost nothing to do that due to Whispernet.

So cool!
