I just bought a used Nikon D700. :cool1:

Anyone want to pass on some "Full-Frame" advice?

I know my Tokina 11-16 is going to vingette. I think my 24-70mm and 70-200mm will work out fine. What about the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and Nikon 70-300mm? I know I could go and look this up somewhere, but it's more fun to talk about it here.

The Sigma 30 is a DX lens, which I'm sure you know...so I don't know what it would end up looking like on full-frame unless you shot with it in DX mode, which I think the D700 has (but I obviously could be wrong because I unfortunately do not own one yet!).

The 70-300 should work great on the D700. I see loads of pictures taken with that combo on NikonCafe and they look great, in fact people that have upgraded from DX to FX with it have said it looks even better than it did previously---although that may just be the excitement of the jump to FX showing.

Congrats! So jealous and excited to see some test shots!

I'm keeping my D300, so those DX lenses are going to still get their workout. :)
Friday can't come fast enough. :)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :thumbsup2:thumbsup2.... so excited for you Amy ...the D700 I had in the front yard is all melted now :lmao: .... can't wait to see some of your shots with it. Wish I was a little closer to actually getting one but alas I will just sit back and lust over your shots.

Congrats!!!:cool1: Full frame has been more of a learning curve then I thought it would be but I'm finally finding my groove with it. I ended up ordering the 50 f/1.4 and knew my Tamron 28-70 would work so haven't bothered to give the Sigma 30 a try on it. The camera has a vignette control (L, M, H) and I noticed I had some on the Valentine pics I did of my kids. I have no idea what the camera was set to and it was a white back ground. Anyway, have it set to high now and haven't noticed it since.

Sweeeeet!! I wish I could upgrade, but I'm going with a new lens first, then maybe a new speedlight, then a full frame.

Congrats!!!!! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Congratulations! :woohoo:

I'd be curious to hear about the differences between the 2 cameras and what you like and don't like about the full frame cameras.

On the one hand it would be easier to just think of it as a 'sensor size' only change but Wendy is reporting that it's more than that so I guess it has to be experienced to be understood.

Thanks to Wendy and, you, Amy for sharing this experience with us. Just like a Disney trip report we are living vicariously through your camera upgrades! :thumbsup2

Wowzers! Congratulations, Amy. You are going to be taking some amazing pictures of high school sports now! I can hardly wait to see what you will be able to do with the "new baby." OK, with the gorgeous weather and our two gorgous new cameras, we just HAVE to go out and shoot together.

Congrats!

I normally would be jealous, but I have mentally dealt with the fact that I am waiting for the D800 or the D700 replacement.

Doesn't the D700 have a DX mode that makes it shoot like a crop so you can still use those lenses without worrying about vignetting?

The biggest thing for me is the difference in Depth of Field (or field of view depending who you talk to). I really didn't think it would be that big of a difference but it really is. I'm used to a gradual fall off but on the D700 if feels like the fall off is instantaneous. It's probably not but the difference is big enough to cause me endless frustration. I'm used to nailing shots at wide open apps with little issue and right now f/5.6 is humbling me.:rolleyes1
I can start a thread if you want and give you all my observations and anyone else would be more then welcome to share theirs. You just have to keep in mind that they won't be technical at all just what I feel are the major differences between the D90 and D700 from my personal experience.

Doesn't the D700 have a DX mode that makes it shoot like a crop so you can still use those lenses without worrying about vignetting?
There is but it cuts the mega pixels down to 5. If you want all 12 plus then you have to deal with the vignetting which IMHO is not a big deal as you have plenty of room to crop.

Congrats Amy! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Yes, but it does so at a cost, it drops the resolution to 5mp, since it's only using a portion of the sensor.

Oy!! All this talk of full frame!!! ::yes::

I'm running up to B and H this Friday with DS to drool all over the 'merch". Does anybody have any fondling requests?

I'm going to check out zooms for my D90 (Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor) and see what they have in the used pile. I am debating on whether to take up all my equipment and start playing lets make a deal with the used department for a full frame something or other. I probably won't ditch the whole kit and kaboodle but the force is strong with full frame and I know one day I will submit to the urge.

I still have the D60 but my 12 year old says he really wants that camera so I am sort of ham strung as far as selling that and the 18-55 lens and using the moola for the 18-105. I really want him to experience photography at his age and he has read me the riot act about ditching the D60. He says he wants to use it to take pictures of the characters during Star Wars weekends.

I was looking at the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR II Nikkor lens but the test reports say it's not as sharp as the 18-105 lens and sharpness is what I crave!

So see what you started Wendy and Amy (and Carol!!!)

If I wasn't excited before...I am super EXCITED now!!!!!!
I have the UPS tracking page up on the laptop and I've been refreshing it every few hours. It's still sitting in NY but I paid a little extra for 2-day shipping, so it should be here "by end of day" on Friday :) which is cool because my boys have wrestling meets on Friday night and all day on Saturday and Sunday. I might have to carry 2 bags in order to bring it all with me - maybe a small rolling suitcase. (LOL)

Got room in your trunk for a hitchhiker??? I would love to make a trip to b&h someday. I dont think your covert fondling of merchancdise on my behalf will cut it. :lmao:

Tracking numbers are wonderful and evil all at the same time. When you see its at the distribution center nearest you and you know the what the next status is .... you wanna just scream thru the computer .... "get it on the darn truck already, don't you guys know I'm frozen until my package is 'out for delivery'?"
