Somebody Should Have Taught Him
Retold By Jane Watkins

I went to a birthday party
but I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink at all,
so I had a Sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
the way you said I would,
that I didn't choose to drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.
I knew I made a healthy choice and
your advice to me was right
as the party finally ended
and the kids drove out of site.
I got into my own car,
sure to get home in one piece,
never knowing what was coming,
something I expected least.
Now I'm lying on the pavement.
I can hear the policeman say,
"The kid that caused this wreck was drunk."
His voice seems far away.
My own blood is all around me,
as I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
"This girl is going to die."
I'm sure the guy had no idea,
while he was flying high,
because he chose to drink and drive
that I would have to die.
So why do people do it,
knowing that it ruins lives?
But now the pain is cutting me
like a hundred stabbing knives.
Tell my sister not to be afraid,
tell Daddy to be brave,
and when I go to heaven to
put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.
Someone should have taught him
that it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his mom and dad had,
I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter,
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
and I'm so unprepared.
I wish that you could hold me, Mom,
as I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say
I love you and good-bye.

I get chills every single time i read this!
That is one of the many reasons i dont drink
and try to stay away from the ones who do!!
why would you put someones family or even
your own family in that position!! i mean you could be driving
drunk and hit my mom or dad. and it would be all
your fault and no one elses!!

That was in one of my Chicken Soup for the whatever Soul books I had. It made me so upset when I read it! It's so sad to know that that really happens often around the world.:sad2:

I've seen this poem many times. It's still heart breaking. :\
I decided a few months ago that I'm not going to drink when I turn 21.

That was sad.

I'm not going to swear never to drink. My uncle is an alcoholic, my great-grandfather was an alcoholic. Their lives were a mess. It's enough to put you off drinking until you're drunk.
I've never found anything particulary pleasant or attractive about throwing up, stuttering, choking on your tongue or being completely out of control anyways.

Very upsetting

I love the chicken soup for the soul books

A girl read this for my Drama class for story-telling. She almost cried. I wanna get those books now.

That story always makes me sad, especially the fact that she died and she's saying sorry to her mom. :(

I too read this in the Chicken Soup book and in emails. Still makes me sad :(

It's so selfish of people to drink and drive. It's enough to kill yourself, but to put others in danger too?! Just..ughh. I could never imagine doing it.

That's why I'm not going to over drink. Maybe a glass of wine or whatever IF I'm at a nice dinner or something.
