I could use some advice for treating kids with the H1N1?- update 12/16

When DH was here we got some good news. The pulse looks like it's a typical Sinus Arrythmia (sp?) which is present in most young girls but that just gets amplified by infection. She has had no fever so far today without medicine. She has not needed any inhalers at all and is fine with room air. Right now she is looking good smiling, singing and just being her perky self. It seems we're just here to finish up the IV antibiotics for the blood and lung infections, it seems to be working and if it continues we'll be hom Monday night. I am so grateful she is doing better but am totally floored how fast she got so sick and someone here said they are getting 4-5 admissions a day for this and that DD came in much better off than many kids: 0 She went from doing suicides at full Basketball practice Thursday night to fever Friday to blood infection and Pneumonia demanding isolation and admission by Monday 9am... unbelievable.

Everyone out there watch yourselves and your kids for trouble taking in deep breaths & fatigue with normal activities. I knew something was wrong Saturday but since she was at the Dr Friday and he didn't hear Pneumonia I let it slide thinking it was just her cough and she was tired from not sleeping.

Thank you all for all your prayers, I have no doubt in my mind that they helped me & my girl stay strong for this... hugs to all from us.

Thats great Luv....Im so glad shes on her way to making a full recovery. Soon you guys will be leaving that hospital and getting back home and back to normal. So happy to hear it. I was thinking of you guys last night.:flower3:

This is wonderful news! I'm glad the rollercoaster ride is almost over for all of you..

Dson-in-law's friends son (5 yrs. old - no underlying medical conditions) came down with the swine flu this week (confirmed upon hospitalization).. In less than 24 hours of first showing symptoms, he was admitted to the Pediatric ICU and is in very critical condition.. We're all scared to death - the little guy is SO sick - and of course still no shots available in our neck of the woods.. Now the question is: Will the rest of this family come down with it too? He has a twin sister and a 13 yr. old sister.. Nasty, scary stuff..:sad2:

FYI, yesterday one of the REsidents tip-toed in to check my DD's lung sounds and did something none of the other Dr's have done, including the Pediatrician. Apparently, when Pneumonia is present the infection will distort certain sounds, and whispers. When he was checking my DD he had her speak and then whisper. There were a few tests but the only one I remember is that when listened through a stethescope (sp? limited time and no spellcheck) if pneumonia is present the E sound will often sound like an A.

I wish I knew this ahead of time to ask my Pediatrician to do it. If anyone knows the drill in more detail please post it here for parents. If I remember I will ask and post a more complete explanation.

Now I'm back into the room to enjoy my wonderful blessing of a daughter:goodvibes

PS C.Ann, according to the ICU Dr who was on call last night MANY kids go from perfectly healthy to ICU FAST. considering what happened to my DD while I stared at her for 3 days I can't say I am not suprised. Its faster than one would think is humanly possible and gets out of control in an instant.
I'll keep him and all the other sick people in my prayers.

I'm so glad to hear your DD is so much better! You'll be home for Thanksgiving! :goodvibes

DD woke up saying she feels back to normal and the Dr just came by to say she sounds ven better than yesterday and the only reason we have to stay is the antibiotics! So now DD is planning all the cookies she wants to bake with me Tuesday and Wednesday for Thanksgiving:goodvibes

I am soooo done with worrying about the little things, we are totally going to WDW soon to have fun as a family!

We're home:cool1:

DD still has moderate Pneumonia in one lung and mild in the other but the fevers have gone and her blood looks clear so they sent us home after her 4pm IV to follow up with oral antibiotics for the next week. Sure, she's not 100% but she's home and sleeping like an angel in her own bed... Thank God

Thanks :flower3:

this is called egophony
when there is consolidated lung tissue as in pneumonia when we ask the patient to say ee it sounds like a

we ask the patient to whisper because again with consolidated lung tissue it comes thru loud and clear, its called pectoriloquy.

that is so interesting. Can it be heard w/o a stethescope (sp)?

SO background. The day after my DD was released I called the Pulmonary specialist to find out when DD's follow up would be. DD & DS were already scheduled to be seen for a reg visit the AM on Dec 24th so when I didn't hear back I understood that to mean she was absolutely fine. She started a touch of a cough on Sunday and me thinking she was now just like everyone else I settled into my normal wait & see pattern

SO yesterday, while on the phone with the Pediatrician about getting my kids the PPV23 vaccine (the vaccine I was begging for her to get back in the Spring, the vaccine the Dr said she didn't need because she wasn't high risk enough... the bacteria that also nearly killed her) the Ped tells me he & the Pulmonologist had a conversation right after she was released from the hospital. In this meeting the 2 Dr's agreed she needed a folow up x-ray back then. No-one let me know... still wouldn't if I didn't happen to call! So I needed to rush her in to get x-rays today. Unbelievable!

I am disgusted with both offices right now. THen at around 9am I got a call back re: the hostile voicemail I left the Pulmonologist last night, and they had no explanation. But they told me DD should ALSO be seen today by Ped so that is what I did with my day. Clinical exam looks ok, but she has begun coughing again, same dry airy cough as when she was fist sick. She had zero cough until about 3 days ago and it's intermittent. No word on the x-rays yet.

I am sooooooo angry!
