I caught a REALLY big fish today!

I was so upset this morning! Ted and I went to Naples for the weekend and went fishing this morning on the Naples Pier. What a beautiful spot! Dolphins were playing all around us, but kept a safe distance from the fishermen on the pier.

Well, I was reeling in my little bait fish, when TWO dolphins came speeding over and one gulped it right down! I screamed! I instantly began letting out line so the hook wouldn't hurt the dolphin. It rolled over on its belly just as Ted ran over and cut the line. The dolphin spit the fish back out, and I don't think the hook stayed in! I was DEVASTATED! I was so afraid I hurt it! The dolphin swam away for a while, but came back later for more!

People kept hooking pelicans and another dolphin got hooked as well!

Nobody seemed to be catching any REAL fish!

I don't have pictures of the actual dolphin hooked.... I was kind of busy at that time....

I do have lots of pictures of the pier and the dolphin swimming around.


If anyone is ever in Naples, check out the fishing pier. It is full of locals full of "big fish" stories and lots of tourists checking out the sights. What a blast!

I know nothing about fishing and fishing protocol...what happens when, as you mentioned, a pelican or dolphin gets hooked? The line gets cut but the hook stays with the animal?

Apparently the hooks are made from a material that rusts and falls out in a couple of days. The saltwater reacts with the kind of metal in the hooks. It still doesn't make me feel any better about it.

One guy hooked a pelican while we were there. He reeled the pelican in, and the pelican flew up onto the pier. He held onto the pelican and pulled the fish out of the bird's mouth. Then, same dumb pelican went after somebody else's line!
