I'm in NW PA, and the roads are not good here. I could barely drive up the hill to the school, I wish I had put dd on the bus. It's getting worse and we now have a winter storm warning. And they do not do early dismissal.

We really wanted a snow day, even though they do not plan them into the school calendar. They take away a day from spring break.

I am a school bus driver and today we are having our first snow day. We have had days that we thought we shouldn't have had school and when the parents complain I tell them they don't have to send their child and call the superintendent to say why you aren't sending your child.

If you are afraid the roads are only going to get worse- go pick her up now. I did this once when we were having an ice storm...

My kids both take the bus home and we don't live too far from the school. They are probably safer on the bus than with my bad driving on the snow!

NW PA? Like Erie area? They don't build snow days into the calendar?? That's crazy! Everyone knows how much snow potential that part of the state has!

We're in NE PA and our district builds in four snow days. Today we are using day one, and I'll go out on a limb and say that day two will be tomorrow. Then we are off Fri/Mon for President's Weekend.

We don't get Spring Break here, or really any "fluff" days at all....so maybe that's why we can have snow days built in??

We're about 30 min. south of Erie.
Yes, unbelievable that there are no snow days. But we do get out of school early at the end of the year, usually between June 3-10. This year there are 3 days in March off ( we are down to 2 now) and 3 days at Easter. The teachers get to vote about the vacation days, I don't know who decides not to have built in snow days.

Are you close to Edinboro? My neighbor is a freshman there this year...she's doing well, but gets homesick often. It's a good six hour trip from here, so she's pretty stuck there! When she was packing up in the fall to start school, she lugged up her boots, coats, etc. in preparation!

I'm always interested in how school districts figure out their calendars. We don't get any significant time off here, with the exception of Christmas break. We get a day here and there, but no fall or spring break. We start school the last week in August and we end on June 4. And we have those four snow days built in. If we don't use them, we still get out June 4.

Stay safe and warm!!!

They don't "do" early dismissal? What a load of crap. If the weather and roads get too bad, they'll have no choice, unless they want to endanger the lives of their students.

Our city NEVER does early dismissal... if they go to school they stay all day. There are too many kids and it's a logistical nightmare to try to get hold of the parents.

Our school district doesn't do early dismissals either unless it is already on the calendar. There was a problem a few years ago during an ice storm and young kids were dropped off with no supervision at home. Since that day, no more early dismissals. If they go in the morning, they stay for the day:)

I've been known to pick DD up if I feel the roads are dangerous. I'd rather she be with me than on the bus with a driver I don't know.

No early dismissals for us either, about halfway between Erie and Pittsburgh. We are still half day Kindergarten and they can't get the buses back in time for the high school dismissal if they do it early.

I can understand the fear of kids getting dropped off unintended too. Times are different now where both parents have to work to make ends meet, unlike when I was young in the 80's and I only knew one kid who's mother worked.
