I can't believe there are no rentals!

I am so upset with myself, but our trip was a last minute decision. I got plane tickets and booked a room at the Coronado, but now I can't find a rental car. We will be arriving 12/24 and staying one week, but Dollar and Budget are completely sold out. The only luck I had was with National, but the rate was $329/week for a compact. I also got a rate with Avis of $468, but that was even worse. This is such a disappointment, but I haven't given up. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lisa

Since you are staying on-site, skip the rental car and use Mears or one of the towncar services to get too and from the airport. If you plan to go to a non-Disney park, it will still be a lot less expensive to take a paid shuttle than to rent a car.

Hi Nancy,
That's great advice, except we wanted to go to Universal and Kennedy Space Center also. So, we will definitely need a car. I just tried to book through hotwire, but they have nothing either. I guess that's what happens when one waits till the last minute:-(

Do not arrive at the airport with no car reserved and expect to get a good deal at any of the counters.

Try checking Travelocity.com twice a day, you might get lucky. You can also call different car rental agencies' 800 numbers, again twice a day to price shop.

Most of the rental companies' fleets are short at the moment, because they had to do so many one-way rentals when the ground-stop happened 9/11. It is so much trouble and
expense to get cars back to their home locations that most of the companies just decided
to sell off the cars that were far from 'home.'

Things should be better once the new model-year fleet goes into service.
