I Can Spot Frozen Fireworks Anywhere! Aug. '14 TR Updated 7/12

Welcome back, friends! We last left off getting some adult beverages (after a fairly long wait). We took the drinks and headed for Streets of America. Funniest moment of the night was when we were standing there and Claude Frollo snuck up behind Chelsea and scared the crap out of her!

This is where our night began to unravel a bit, however. In addition to the stationary M&Gs, there were supposed to be characters roaming. We ran into Katt and Steven who were fairly frustrated with the whole thing already. Turns out, there were so many people around the “roaming” characters that the character attendants just set up lines for those characters too. No roaming and no lines of less than 45 minutes apiece. Yuck!

They had gone over to the Star Wars section to visit Emperor Palpatine, the friend of his is one of Katt’s friends. We decided to follow their lead and see what was going on in a galaxy far, far away. We got to the emperor’s line, which didn’t look too bad. The CM said it would be about a 30-minute wait, but he would have to leave for a 35-minute break in the middle, so the wait would be more like 60-75 minutes. Ugh. No, thanks. We went to see which Star Wars characters were roaming. We found Storm Troopers and Zam Wesell, but neither was stopping roaming long enough for people to grab photos with them.

We needed to regroup. So we headed for the Writer’s Stop for a drink and discuss a game plan for the rest of the night. Obviously, the character M&Gs just weren’t in the cards for us tonight. The lines were just too long. It was time to hit up the two dance parties instead. First up was Hades’ dancy party at the hat stage.

The characters (including Anastasia, Druzilla, Queen of Hearts and the Big Bad Wolf) all bopped around, dancing with everyone and stopping to take photos if you asked.

We next headed to the Guardians of the Galaxy “Mix Tape Vol. 1” dance party. And let me just say that this guy isn’t Chris Pratt, but he was easily one of the highlights of my evening.

It turned out, we were having a much better time now that we’d given up on the idea of meeting characters or buying any merchandise. It was about 50 minutes before the final “Oogie Boogey Freaky Funhouse” show of the evening, so we headed to the theater to see if there was a line to get in. The line had just began, so plopped down to wait right behind the rope.

DSC_9167-L.jpg

The CM who led the line up to the theater said that by the time they had started letting us into the theater, the line went all the way down Sunset Boulevard and part of the way down Hollywood Boulevard. Yeesh! I’m glad we got there when we did!

The preshow was a guy who made crazy balloon animals, did magic tricks and basically just made us all laugh a lot.

It was time for our Halloween-loving host to greet us.

Here’s where the show took a not-very-Disney turn. The next two acts were both male/female duos. And their acts ended up being highly sexualized in nature. There had been warnings on the posters outside the theater that the show wasn’t intended for small children. But that didn’t stop me from turning to Franklin and asking if we were still in Disney proper. First up was the crossbow-wielding couple.

By the time we cleared out of the theater, it was time to set up for fireworks.

Apparently the fireworks show was a gift to all the villainous fans from Maleficent, who kicked off the show!

That’s where our night of villainy ends. “Villainy in the Sky” was a great fireworks show. So far, the DHS fireworks have never let me down! Like I said earlier in the chapter, the party was a mixed bag for us overall. But we made the best of it and even managed to have a little fun. That’s where we’ll stop for now. But first, which is your favorite villain to meet?

The dance parties look like a lot of fun. Bummer though that for this event it took "given up on the idea of meeting characters or buying any merchandise" to enjoy it. And that show does seem very not Disney. I get being a bit more daring with the acts for this type of event but you don't need things like "licking her entire body" as part of a Disney show. ... Though I do give them credit for trying something new.

I did also hear the lounge they set up in the Hollywood Brown Derby was really good so hopefully they can take a lot of lessons learned from this - build on the good, fix the bad - and do it better next year.

Fireworks look great - though, I agree, very red.

Great photos from Franklin!

Just now finding this TR and I have to know where you got your Mickey tank!! And hopefully this isn't too much info but is that a Minniesque bra you are wearing with it? Lol I love it!!

Hey Missy! I am sorry I'm so behind - I was on my own Disney trip for 11 days and am just now catching up on EVERYONE. I just started my TR, so I'm ready to catch up now! Usually starting the TR means you're settled in, right!? :scared:

That baby was so adorable. Can you imagine waving at all those people as a little, and having them ALL wave back!? But I can't BELIEVE you waited so long in line for Maleficient. Oddly, that Maleficient looks quite a lot like a certain Lady Tremaine that I met this last trip.... Wonder if they're buddies.... I need to look very closely at my Lady Tremaine photos!

The fireworks pictures are amazing! I heard "interesting things" about the Oogie Boogie show...

I was at WDW during the first Villains Unleashed and decided not to go - I was so glad later that I did NOT! I heard how awful the traffic was to get in, and how it was so snarled that buses were stuck for an hour or more. I couldn't have handled that!

From what I have read, including your report, the events at the Villains party seemed to be much better than the Meet & Greets.

Um. Interesting Freak show! :scared1:

Fireworks looked awesome!!!

:thumbsup2

Another few great updates! Dance Party's look so fun but let's talk about that show....YIKES!! I would have wondered if I was still in Disney as well!!

The fireworks pictures...OMG!!! Stunning, absolutely stunning! Shanleigh was reading your posts last night and told me how amazing they were and I said I'll look tomorrow morning when I have my coffee and time to reply :lmao:

Hey guys! Just popping in for a quick second. Thanks for the compliments, everyone. There are still plenty of fireworks from Hollywood Studios ahead!
I also shot a video of Villainy in the Sky. It was with a point-and-shoot and I just stuck it on top of the other camera. One day I'll have a better camera for videos.

I'd heard some not very good reviews about the Villains party, so I was interested in seeing your take on it. I love that you guys were able to change your game plan and make the most of it.

The dance parties are always so much fun! Even better to get to party with the villains!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your trip report- and your photos are amazing! Makes me wish I had taken a camera, instead of relying on my cell phone! :lmao:

DH and I are also from D.C.!

*sigh* Someday I'll stay at the VGF. Someday.

Oooh, those clouds did look ominous! Perfect set up for a villainous evening though.

I think that generally for any of the one day only parties (24 hour event, Villains Unleashed), the lines to meet the characters will be insane.

Holy cow! A full refund for the tickets. Sometimes I really think it pays to just tell them what you think, in a very nice way.

Katt and Steven really did look fabulous that night.

That friend of Maleficent does look amazing! What a great M&G.

I'm glad that you guys had a good time even thought things didn't go according to plan. It's so frustrating when that happens. I could imagine that having the roaming characters likely got completely out of hand. Ugh.

Amazing fireworks pictures as per usual. :thumbsup2

I got that Disney was trying to go more edgy and adult with the Freaky Funhouse, but it was a jarring change, to say the least.

I heard good things about the HBD lounge. But I kept seeing people complain on Twitter about waiting for a table, so we never went in that night.

Just now finding this TR and I have to know where you got your Mickey tank!! And hopefully this isn't too much info but is that a Minniesque bra you are wearing with it? Lol I love it!!

I got the tank at Debshops.com and the red underneath is another tank top.

No apologies necessary! I know how easily life gets in the way of Disboards time!

Let me know if the friend of Maleficent was the same one you're thinking of! You clearly made a good choice to skip the villains party last year, that was a complete disaster.

Dance parties and shows > M&Gs, definitely!

Yep, it was a bit of a bizarre scene at the Freaky Funhouse. But props for Disney for trying something new. Glad you guys liked the fireworks photos!

I've become a big fan of Disney's dance parties, they're a lot of fun!

Hi neighbor! Glad to have you aboard this TR!

You will totally love VGF! Part of the M&G line craziness at these events is of Disney's own doing. Take Emperor Palpatine, for instance. They only had one friend of his ALL NIGHT LONG. So there were 30-minute breaks instead of just rotating another friend in!

Even if things at the party weren't perfect it still looks like an awesome time.

My all time favorite villain meet and greet was when my brother and I met Jafar in 1994. I was 9 1/2 and my brother was 6. We went up and gave him our books to sign, and after he signed them he threw the pen off to the side. My brother went and got it and we posed for the picture. Jafar used his hands and smushed our heads into the sides of his robe, and after the picture when he let us go he looked at the hand that had been on my head and wiped it down the side of his robe. You could FEEL the disgust rolling off of him. It was fantasic! And even 20 years later it is one of my most vividly remembered meet and greets.

Sounds like you guys had the perfect attitude to enjoy it! I thought last year's Villain's party was also over crowded. Thought things would have changed. Maybe next year!

That Ooegy Boogey show...wow, maybe they got lost on the way to Universal!

Glad you were able to find some fun moments that night, even with the disappointing meet n' greets and merchandise lines! Attitude certainly does make a difference!

As always, your fireworks photos are spectacular!! :cheer2:

I painted the Magic Band with nail polish and then added the Cover Band to it! Originally it was a lime green Magic Band, to match the Cover Band. But it just really felt like it needed to be purple!

I bought four cover bands from them, all before they stopped selling the Disney ones. I have a Frozen, a Belle, a Cinderella, and something called Lotus Blossom. I painted one of the MB's to match the Belle cover bands and it looks really nice. The other three just have the Mickey heads painted. I wish they were still selling Disney bands. :( It is so easy to decorate the MB's with them, but none of their current ones appeal to me.

While the dance parties look great, it is evident that disney just cobbled this event together and hadnt thought through the finer details. Sad folks had to pay for what surely looks like a learning experience for the ole house of the mouse. Unless of course the fire act was any indication of pleasure island 2.0, disney goes wild ; )

Man we didn't do the dance party OR the Oogie Boogie show! They both look like a riot!!!

Your fireworks photos are breath taking  They're making me incredibly homesick today!

God bless you for being able to keep up two reports at once! I'm STILL writing my report for my four day trip back in February!

Those villas are gorgeous! Way too fancy for me. Haha.

Chelsea's sparkly mouse ears match the theme of the Mine Train ride perfectly!

That Maleficent is fantastic!! WOW. I'm also impressed with the Guardians of the Galaxy stuff. I was very proud of myself when I saw the movie and already had several of the songs from the Mix Tape on my Ipod! Haha.

Kudos to Disney for being so welcoming of your feedback! Especially since it sounds like you had a good time, even with the hiccups.

As much as I wanted to meet Elsa when I was there in February, I couldn't bring myself to wait in those lines. But depending on how much time I had, I think I would be willing to wait two hours to see Prince John. And Captain Jack Sparrow, if his friend was Johnny Depp ;)

Despite riding it twice last trip didn't catch on to the sign that says "ECHO CAVERN ... cavern ... cavern" :lmao:

<like button>

And I HAVE to share this story... a former coworker of mine DESPERATELY wanted to name her daughter "Echo Echo". :rotfl: She was blessedly vetoed, but I think of it anytime the word "echo" comes up in conversation. I think it is absolutely hysterical and wildly cruel.
