At my family reunion today, I learned from my cousin's Texas-born husband how to speak "southern".

Now, you southerners, correct me if this is wrong, but, here goes:

"Y'all" is used when referring to one person

"All Y'all" is used when referring to more than one person

Can this Yankee girl now be an honorary southern girl?;) :smooth:

Nope - You are still a Yankee. "Y'all" is plural, and it's simply a contraction for "you all". It makes perfect sense :teeth:. At least that's how it is used in my parts of Oklahoma and Texas. "All y'all" is redundant.

OK - now I'm really confused. :p

Once a Yankee, always a Yankee I guess.;)

That's okay. We're a forgiving bunch here in Texas and love Yankees even if y'all do speak funny ::yes::. As for those in the deep South?? I'm not so sure :teeth:.

:teeth: You'll never be Texan but you're learning

I have a question, too, though. If you don't say y'all, how do the people in the room know if you are speaking to just one of them or all of them? In other words, how do they know if your "you" is singular or plural ?

I'm working on it. I really wish I had a southern accent or an English accent - something cool like that.:D

Surely you jest! Once a Yankee, always a Yankee. No escapin' it. Least not 'round these parts.

That, my dear, is a Yankee secret we don't divulge.;)

Oh my gosh!! A Yankee just indicated that southern accents are cool like English accents!! Well, maybe not as cool , but cool nonetheless?? I never knew :). Now maybe I'll speak a little more proudly with my southern accent :teeth:.

I never thought I had a southern accent either.... until we went to Maine! Steve's cousins kept teasing us about our accents! LOL And yes, even though I'm in Maryland, I do say, "y'all". Still don't have a southern accent IMO.. but go a bit south to NC to his other cousins, and boy do they have a heavy accent!

But you watch, I'm gonna practice - and then, I'll sneak into a DIS meet and say I'm one of the southern DISers, and everyone will believe me. Y'all just wait.;)

I've heard lots of northerners on my trips to WDW, and I've concluded that it depends on where up north you are from. For instance, Boston accents are kinda sexy . New Jersey accents aren't :duck:.

You mean BAHston accents?;)

Yeah, those :). Just not the snobby ones or too-Kennedy sounding ones :teeth:.

I must admit, I am from the deep south and my accent is as thick as peanut butter!::yes:: When I say Ya'll, it pertains to all present.

On a side note - I think northern accents are cute on women and sexy on the men!::yes:: I would probably be shot by the hardcore rednecks for saying that!:teeth:

I'm born and raised in NJ and I'd have to agree with you. I wish I could pick up a bit of a southern accent now that I live down south but I think it's too late for me. I'm still hoping my kids will pick one up. Y'all think it's possible?;)
