I broke my foot!

On Wednesday, I was walking into my allergist's office and lost my footing on the sidewalk. I didn't fall, but I had to take several big hard steps to right myself.

So I went to the acute care clinic right away, thinking I had blown out my ankle. They xrayed the ankle, and sent me home with a sprain.

By the next day, it was evident that it was the foot, and that something wasn't quite right, so I saw a podiatrist yesterday, who took foot xrays and found the break (it was pretty obvious on the xray--even I saw it!)

Now I'm in a boot and not supposed to bear weight on that foot, and re-visit the podiatrist on Monday. And I'm freaking out--I haven't broken anything worse than a toe ever!

Anyone have any sage advice (or reassurance)? I'm a big baby about stuff like this! :scared:

 OUCH! Man, that stinks Binnie~take it easy, stay off it, and be good to yourself:thumbsup2 I'm the "queen of broken bones" and it will heal...you just have to be "nice to it":lmao: Take any pain meds you've been prescribed and ibuprofen otherwise:goodvibes Good thoughts and prayers for you:)

My FIL broke is foot about 6 months ago. The top of it actualy:confused3 The funny thing is he has no idea how. Anyway, he also got to wear the beautiful boot and got some pretty good meds out of it but he recovered rather quickly and hopefully you will too.

I twisted my ankle and broke my fibula last month. I was in the boot for 7 weeks. It takes a couple of weeks for the swelling to go down and then you should be able to get around wearing the boot pretty well..Hang in there, once you get used to the boot its much easier.

I feel your pain, I just brokemy ankle (my first broken bone EVER) last friday.

I have to wear the boot for 6-10 weeks and Im on crutches. The boot is fine and Ive really gotten used to it, it just gets hot outside sometimes. The crutches are my problem, Im having realy difficulty with them but I guess Im still getting used to them. There goes my summer:sad2:

 So sorry! Last summer we got a new pool; I broke my tibia and phiba so bad I had to have surgery on the 4th of JULY! Needless to say it was a long summer! I get to have my metal plate and pins taken out in a few weeks!
My advice to you is to let people help you. I am a family daycare provider and was able to work the entire time in a boot, crutches, and a wheelchair thanks to my family helping. My kids cooked meals everyday for they daycare kids. My mom ran me to dr.s and pt while husband watched the kids.
Also try to do things you normally would. I went camping two weeks after my fall and surgery crutches, and wheelchair in all. I was determined I wasn't staying home ( and I couldn't have stayed by myself) so I went and had a great time! Good luck! I even managed to do wdw in DEC with all that walking. My foot swelled a lot and I took painkillers a few times but i made it!;)

I have a broken foot right now ( navicular bone). I fell off a step onto concrete on April 24th. I had surgery on it and am in a hard cast for 9 more days and then a walking boot. It has been a long journey. I had crutches for a few days and couldn't stand them so my dr. told me about the RollerAid. It looks like a kids scooter and you put your knee on the seat and use your good leg to roll around. It has really helped me. You can rent one, my insurance is paying for the rental.
Put your foot up and ice it a lot. If you could see the break, did they mention putting a pin in the bone? If you do have to have surgery, the swelling needs to be down. It's better to have the surgery right away so you can start the 6 weeks to healing. I was in a boot for a few days and then a hard cast when they saw how bad it was and that I needed surgery.

If you have any questions let me know. I am also a big baby and nearly passed out when they told me my foot was broken.
We're supposed to go on our WDW/Sea World trip on the 16th and I'm waiting to see how my foot is doing.

DH broke his foot in 2007, not long before our Florida trip. His was a small fracture, and they taped it up and told him to stay off it as much as possible. He took lots of ibuprofen-I think 800mgs. (4 pills). The doctor said it was OK to take that much. It made a world of difference. It healed well.

About 15 years ago I fell down some stairs and broke mine (just behind my baby toe) and ended up in 2 casts over 2 months. When the doctor removed the cast the first time and saw that it still wasn't healed and also saw I was a mom with a 3 year old he said "Hmm, It might have been better to have put a pin in" in which I would have healed faster. :confused3 So on to another cast and 4 more weeks.:rolleyes1

I wish you all the best and speedy healling.
Shannon

I'm sorry about your foot. I broke my foot back in November and I had to wear casts for 8 weeks. I hope you have a good recovery.

Aww....

I broke my foot this past Christmas Christmas Day actually. We were just about to go to the big family Christmas. I was carrying a cookie tray to the car and I stepped down off the step. I twisted my foot and pop. I broke my 5th Metatarsal bone. I was in a cast for 10 weeks. It was the first broken bone for me . I made sure I kept up with ibuprophen. It really helped with swelling. On a side note, I had great arms from the crutches. My arms were so defined.

I officially HATE crutches! My arms and shoulders hurt like heck!

I ordered one of those knee scooters, but it won't get here until later in the week. I feel like I'm going to die in the meantime!

I feel your pain. My DH broke his foot while on vacation at EPCOT last week. He is in an air cast and off of work for at least 2 weeks. It was interesting trying to get him through Disney & the airports on crutches/in wheelchairs.

Which part of the foot did you break?

I broke mine about 3 years ago. Walked off my back deck, stepped on the edge of the 'boot cleaner' thing and twisted my ankle.
SNAP.

Bone on the side of my foot. Took a LONG time to heal. Wish he would have offered a pin. I think it would have healed better and quicker.

It's the 5th metatarsal--a Jones fracture--so I know it's going to take FOREVER to heal. I just hate it!

And of course the podiatrist isn't giving any guidance other than no weightbearing on the foot. How am I supposed to do that?! :confused3 Seriously, no weightbearing?!

That is the one I broke. No...... No weightbearing at all. When I started out with the crutches I had NO upper body strength. I mean...none. It was sad. It took me about 2 weeks to feel confident with the crutches. It will get better. At the house, I ended up sliding down the steps on my butt.:lmao: It was much easier.

Did the Dr. teach you how to walk up and down the steps with crutches? When walking up steps foot first then crutches. Walking down crutches then foot. If you have any questions. I would be glad to answer any.:hug:

Me too. I think.. LOL.
I was told it would be 3 weeks in the boot... Then more weeks... Then 2 more weeks.
It was about 8 weeks in the boot all together. still hurts sometimes.

But I AM older.. LOL.
