Update- I think a lot could have been prevented with an email, but hopefully things should be back on track now.

Two weeks ago I rented points from a member here on the Rent/Trade board, we emailed back and forth, they booked what I wanted, I received a contract, I looked them up on Orange Country Comptroller website (where they had numerous DVC contracts), I paid through PayPal, received a confirmation email, verified it on DVC website and linked the reservation to my login on MyDisneyExperience, then reservation was cancelled...

Oh no! You are sure your reservation has been cancelled? I'm so sorry. This sounds terrible. Especially since it also sounds like you did some good due diligence. Had this person rented before?

So now I'm more curious. Was the thread you replied to deleted? Because I quickly searched the Rent/Trade board, and you haven't made any posts or replies to rental offers since 2013.

In his post, he states to email him directly for availability, which I did. So I did not post on his thread.

Everything was done on email.

So sorry!! I just rented points also. I check my MDE daily. Would you be willing to pm me his screen name?

I was just contacted by the owner...hopefully a resolution will be made. It had to do with canceling one reservation to book another for someone else. Even though I knew this, it has really confirmed for me that the reservation can be cancelled at anytime.

Are you able to check the availability tool to see if your resort/dates are still available? Not sure if you're a DVC member... Let me know if you need me to check for you. I hope he makes this right for you.

Wow! I'm renting through a broker, but it's still scary to read things like this. I hope you get it sorted out!

Im not certain of the specifics but did they rebook so it's just a different reservation number?

Did you know it ahead of time? That's what it sounds like from this. If so, it sounds like it's OK? Did you get your new reservation and new number?

You know what's fun? Back about two years ago DVC was doing funky things about combining, or separating, multiple reservations. One night I went to check on my plans and they were cancelled. NO email. Nothing in my account. Oh I nearly passed out. Guess what I'm saying is that if this was just a "bookkeeping" thing by the renter, it can happen with DVC, too.

Did you pay the full amount when due? If you just paid an initial percentage through Paypal, the owner made the reservation, and then you didn't send the balance when it was due, I completely understand him cancelling it.

I'm guessing the owner had a request for another reservation that required certain home resort points or something similar that they had originally used on the OPs reservation and they rebooked which would have created a new reservation number. Just a guess of course and if so should have notified the OP of the new reservation number but it wasn't a scam, just poor communication.

As Bumbershoot mentioned a few years ago DVC was making adjustments to members reservations without communicating which generated similar concerns.

I'm glad it was a simple misunderstanding and worked out for you

I guess as a DVC member I'm used to reservation numbers changing and often the number I first get isn't the one I end up with in MDE with swapping out at 7 months etc it might not have occurred to me straight away that the change would show as a cancellation on MDE and I guess maybe the owner didn't expect a renter to check MDE as frequently and maybe thought he/she had time to communicate the new number. Also I guess not panicking when an email doesn't get responded to straight away as you never know where someone is whe you email. For all we know they could be on a transatlantic flight

This panic is something you have to learn to cope with to rent. If you can't a broker helps but it isn't stress free

Renting is a big thing and it involves a lot of trust. But for a rental
Market to exist and to thrive most transactions happen with no problems

Sometimes a reservation number gets changed and it "appears" to be canceled, but in reality the reservation is still there, just under a different number. Yes, this has happened to me and people definitely get freaked out when it happens. Often times it is due to a waitlist or special request.

Also, the same thing can happen to a point broker...just saying.

If an owner belongs to the "More than 20 reservations a year" club, DVC can cancel those reservations and call him a commercial renter.

I'm always so afraid that I would have a misunderstanding like this. I'm an owner, and I once made a reservation for a renter at Kidani, because I forgot to ask him if he'd prefer Kidani or Jambo. I forwarded the confirmation, but he said he preferred Jambo. So I cancelled Kidani, but in those few minutes the Jambo was gone. So I went back and reserved Kidani again. Back then (it was after online reservations but before MDE), the link in the reservation email would keep showing the reservation, even after it was cancelled. So I was so afraid that he'd turn up at AKV with the first Kidani reservation number, which was cancelled, instead of the second, which was good. I sent his the second reservation email with clear (probably pedantic) instructions to delete the previous reservation email.

This is why it's really important to stay in close contact, and (as an owner) to be responsive.
