I am thoroughly disgusted!!

This makes me sick! I can see college students in the medical field disecting things but high school students, thats ridiculous. I hope the teacher is punished or the school for letting him do it. I would simply have refused even if it meant failing. I love animals and there is no way I could do that.

I'm sitting here in shock. I can not believe the school was ok with this. Who gave him the dog. Won't this be Cruelty to animals? My kids had trouble with the birthing flim, this was just plain wrong! :confused3

Oh my! That's HORRIBLE. Even if the dog was to be put to sleep anyway, it should have been done in a humane way. Never should live animals be disected by high school students! I have a problem with it happening at all, but for medical majors, I can see that it's maybe a necessary evil. But this is just ridiculous!

Have to go give my doggie a hug now!

Isn't there some kind of law prohibiting this type of thing? if not, there should be!

In nursing school I had to dissect a dead frozen cat. I felt it was completely unnecessary (and this was in the days before computers) but when I told my professor I didn't want to do it he replied "you will if you want to pass this class" so I did. To me it was useless. IMO much more can be learned from the virtual images of today.

If this happened to my children DH and I would be outraged. There was no need for it whatsoever. For one thing, I don't that much digestion can be seen in an anesthetized dog (duh). :( But more so, it's sad enough that this dog didn't find his forever home. To have done this to him in addition to that was simply reprehensible.

I question why the animal shelter gave them the dog for this purpose (if they were aware of it) and also where this teacher got these drugs which should never have been allowed in a classroom. Remember - tylenol must be locked in the nurses office but it's ok to leave large doses of intravenous drugs -enough to kill an animal - laying around the classroom? And what's with the principal who thinks all of this is ok (saw him say so on the news along with some crying, traumatized students) Simply outrageous.

This is horrible!!! I can't belive they did this..... I guess the next step is to take people on death row and do this to them. You could really learn a lot from that.

At least they would be GUILTY! What did the poor dog do?

.
We did also but at least it wasn't a living, breathing creature. I learned more from the autopsy that we attended.

sorry, I disagree, I am doing this...it does not work for me! does not help me One bit!
Sorry it isn't helping you, but HS students do not need any more than a video of a working digestive system. They are not being trained to do anything with this information. This was completely unneccessary for high school science.

I don't normally respond to a thread like this but here goes.

First, I cannot believe the school board would allow it let alone the principal.

Second, what did they do with the dog after the dissection? At what point did he expire? If he didn't expire from the dissection and the sedatives, what did the teacher do to euthanize him?

Thirdly, good point about the meds in the classroom!

Lastly, the general population who kill and mutilate animals are often suspected to be future serial killers!!!

This is just insane. It makes no sense, there HAS to be some kind of charged that can be filed against this person. I just dont get how this can happen. :confused3
So sickening!

Also, didnt it say he was a substitute! Something about that strikes me as really odd, that he would try this stunt and he is a sub.

if anyone read my post...both of them, you can see that I disagreed with the high school doing this, I am in college and the medical field....nto all people learn the same way.
by the way...according to the principal, this has been done there before he they are planning to continue

My 13yo recently had to disect a frog in science class, they were already dead and she still did no cutting. The group she was in let her take notes and the others did all the work. She said she was glad her group was understanding about her not being able to do it. No way would I expect her to do that in HS, I definately would have not had her in class that day and I did encourage her to participate in the frog exercise but this is just not necessary.

Somehow I doubt that will happen. Much of the country is outraged.

Maybe the substitute had another "bright" educational idea and took him down to the Home Economics cooking lab :duck:.

I know, I know. That was truly tasteless.

Fingers crossed, they don't sound like the apex of humanity...

This makes me feel very sad, and nauseaus i can't spell that word.

i couldn't dissect even a dead dog much less a living one. :guilty:

This is shocking. I had to dissect dead monkeys and cats in nursing school, and I admit, it helped me a lot to see the actual organs. Of course, that was AFTER i lost my lunch. I never got used to it and I detested every moment of it. I cannot see how it benefits HS students in any way to see an animal brutalized in this manner. I hope the parents take this guy to court, and if the principal backs him they should name HIM in the suit as well.

I read your other posts and I totally agree that someone in your position would need more hands on training, I was just clarifying that I don't think high school students need to actually see the digestive system working in front of them to get what THEY need out of a science class. My point wasn't that there wasn't anyone who would need this sort of training. Just that high school students don't.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear the first time.

This is appalling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am horrified!!!!!! What the heck is wrong with people?????
