I was just driving home from work and I glanced over at the car next to me and in the backseat was a women holding a very small baby (less than 6 months). She saw me looking and instead of putting the baby in the car seat (there was one right next to her :furious: :furious: ) she put the baby beside her, and the driver sped around me and got in front of me. And then, ran right into the car in front of her :furious: :furious:

Thank goodness the baby seemed fine, but ugggg.

:sad2: Some people don't realize the value of a child's life until they lose one. They are lucky the baby was okay considering he/she could have become a projectile object in the vehicle. There's a reason for a car seat... THE SAFETY OF THE CHILD. Some don't seem to get the concept until it's too late. Especially when it's something that could have been avoided. :sad2:

I hope you told the police what happened!!!!

I would have made sure to stop, as a witness, and to be SURE that the police pressed charges. I wonder what the laws are in your state. Some are probably pretty stiff, 'child endangerment' type laws.

I should have mentioned that I did stop and that I did make sure the police knew (especially since there was a car seat in the car). I don't know the outcome of any charges.

Good for you for stopping and reporting the baby being out of the car seat to the police. Thank god nothing happened to that baby. I hope something is done to the irresponsible parent(s)!!!! Incesses me to see little ones sitting in the front seat, not seatbelted in, not in proper car seat, etc.!!!!

My latest column (see signature) deals with this very issue.

Good for you for getting involved. It is often too easy to turn and look the other way.

I am sure someone will come to the defense of this woman, claiming that we all do stupid things as mothers, or they didn't have carseats when they were little so it must be OK...

This woman was not "doing something stupid."

She was BEING stupid.

Poor kid

Very Nice!! I will never understand why people do not use car-seats, it is just not worth it. While we were waiting for the police I talked to my 4 year old about how important it is to ALWAYS wear you seatbelt and to be in your car seat.

Another pet peeve of mine is seeing young kids sitting in the front passenger seat. If the airbag opens, the force of it could kill a child. What's worse is that many kids I see sitting in the front seat are not wearing seatbelts. :sad2:

this is a major pet peeve of mine as well.

I will admit that our 11 year old ds sometimes rides in the front seat BUT it has an automatic shut off for the air bag. and he ALWAYS wears his seatbelt. our cars " dont run" without everyones seatbelt being buckled ;)

One of our friends grandbabies was one of the reasons the " No child in the front seat with an airbag" law was passed :(

She was killed whle she was buckled in in her carseat rear facing in the front seat, it happened years ago. This was before there were any warnings on the airbags and they were part of the movement that made it law that they have the warning. So sad...

Im so glad you stayed and told the police, perhaps a hefty fine or worse will drive the message home.

I was in the store one time and this couple was looking at all the ingredients on baby food jars commenting that they wanted only organic etc...well they exited the store the same time as I did and they put their precious organic baby food in the car seat and then the woman got in the passenger seat with the baby and off they drove....I couldn't believe it!!

I saw this last week too.

At toys r us woman got into the parked next to ours with a baby that looked to be about 18 months old. She sat him in the carseat but never buckled him in, then drove off! I don't get it :confused3 Your child's life is not worth the 30 seconds it takes to snap the saftey restraints????????

Guess what I found out? Not all of the school buses that our public school uses for class trips are equipped with seat belts!!!! So, I wrote a note stating that if my son's bus for a 5/23 class trip does not have belts, he is to be left in the school office and I will pick him up!

I don't think there's anyone here who will say not having your child in a carseat is okay. I think you've got that confused with someone losing hold of a leaning toddler. Big difference.
