I have not lifted weights since July. Took some time off due to health problems which lead to no energy. Now I feel much better, on some great supplements, (and, my jeans are getting tight) so I decided to start working out again. Oh man, am I sore. My quads are screaming (did squats yesterday). I decided I would lift three times a week and walk the other four. Walking today, after lifting yesterday, was agony. Why do we do this to our bodies? Is there anything one can do to relieve this pain???

Yeah, stop working out.;)

Sorry to hear you're sore. A warm epsom salt bath will help ease your sore muscles. Some advil might help, too.

SSB loves that pain! :) That way, you know that you really did have a good impact... and will just get less each time.

Didn't Homer Simpson say something about "if it does not kill you, it makes you stronger"..... ;) Methinks his Doctor disagreed, but what the heck!!!

:) :) :)

I have tried Ibuprofen, just takes the edge off. Better than nothing, I guess. So, SSB, since I'm not dead (although I wish I were), I must be stronger?

I think I need that beer you gave to Bonnie! (and I don't drink, so you know how miserable I am!)

Good for you TC~! :)

When you resume resistance training after any extended period of time...you will experience this "good" type of "pain".

You might not want to 'get in to it' this deep...but...In my experience...some suppliments have helped me to eliminate the soreness associated with lifting. I have found that if I "bracket" a workout (1/2 hour before and after) by taking VP Whey Isolate mixed with a teaspoon of Creatin HSC...and seperately 2 teaspoons of GL-3 L-Glutamine...I don't experience any noticable soreness. :)

Everyone is different...but like SSB said....as you're body get's more accustomed to being worked, the soreness won't be as pronouced :)

Thanks, Goofy, I knew I could count on you for a tip. I am hoping that next week at this time, I am not so sore. But, as you all have said, I guess it's "good" soreness. I am just tired of all my clothes being tight, that's all. I'll try your ideas.

TC,

As others have said there is a "good" soreness, but be careful not to work muscles that are sore. The soreness comes from microtears in the muscles during workouts, and the muscle growth actually occurs during your rest days when the muscles repair themselves. Also, if your are sore more than a couple of days after a workout, you may have overused the muscles, either by using too heavy a weight or too many sets or repetitions. If this is the case, back off a little bit to give your muscles a chance to get accustomed to the extra work.

Like GP I've used Whey protein after workouts and it has seemed to help with soreness. Another thing that helps is either a cold shower or bath after a workout. Try to get the water as cold as you can stand it. This has helped betted than anything.

Congrats on a new healthier you.

When I started working out I could only do 1 workout a week. The second week I added one more workout. Then I got to the 3 times a week.

And no there is nothing you can do to stop it. You might try stretching (won't help much but it helps a little)

Usually when I start working out, the second day is the worst for soreness, then it eases. I am hoping for that. It's just my quads that hurt, not the rest of my body. I figure if I'm still sore tomorrow, I'll just do upper body and then do lower when my quads heal. Thanks for all the advice.

I thought it was warm water that helped. I'll try cold next time.

tc,
I just wanted to say that you've piqued my curiosity - what do you look like in a monkey costume??!!;)
Pam

Pam, I played a monkey in a show called All in the Timing, and in June, I didn't look too bad in the monkey suit. I'd been working out all winter and looked pretty good for a 40 year old woman. Now, I wouldn't want to see it. Kind of lumpy in places. That's why I'm working out!

tc,
Well......... I'm a 41 yr. old woman who does NOT like to work out - and I have a lot of "lumps"! Guess I would look great in a baboon or gorilla costume!!;)

I still want to see you in your costume!!:D
Pam

Sorry, didn't get pics!

I'm sore today too! My chest and arms are sore from my workout.

It's a good sore though - isn't it? At least you know you accomplished something.

I vote for stretching too, I think it helps a little.
