I'm not going into details here but just needed to rant for a second. :headache:

I am so over snooty 'photography' boards - dpreview- nikoncafe - dgrin - ugh! I must be somewhat of a masochist for offering things up to the boards for so long but I am seriously fed up with most of them and ready to just give up. (Posting that is- not photography) And it's not that I expect only positive feedback- I appreciate constructive criticism- but when you post something with a specific question and all the replies disregard what you asked and attack some other aspect of the shot it drives me crazy. IE-

Original Post: Is this spot in the upper right corner dust on my sensor?

Reply 1: Composition does nothing for me. ZZZZZ!

Reply 2: I agree with Reply 1

Reply 3: Nikon sucks!

You get the idea.

Okay- Rants over. Thanks for letting me vent. And BTW - Not talking about DIS here. This is the friendliest forum around by far. Thanks to all you DIS'rs who have shown nothing but love. :goodvibes :disrocks:

Message composition does nothing for me. You need to use your filters effectivley.

Just kidding. I agree with all you've stated above. I've had the same experience in the photog forums I've visited, except here, of course. I guess the best way is to join a local photo users' group or take some classes. At least the face-to-face contact should keep the insensitive comments to a minimum.

Wow - I'm so glad it's not just me!! As a complete newcomer to photography, I asked a question on another board (can't even recall which one), and the reply was "buy a book and read it". Since then, I haven't ventured too far from DIS!

I agree. I quit posting on those places a long time ago. I still read DPReview and Steve's boards sometimes, but I never post. The Internet gives weak people a place to pretend that they are strong. They take abuse in the real world and then vent on others in cyberspace.

If I ever have anything critical to say or that could be taken negatively, I try to state that it is nothing personal. Some people on those other sites get very personal.

I agree...I read dpreview all the time, and I have learned alot, but I never post. I find the majority of people to be very full of themselves and their "professional status", and very hard on newbies. But, if you can ignore what comes out of their drippy noses, ;) there are some people there who are very experienced and seem willing to share their knowledge.

I feel the same way about DPreview. Read it all the time, have learned alot but don't post. You can learn alot from the people here as well. I know I have.

What? They left off "RTFM"? ;)http://www.wdwinfo.com/images/smilies/rotfl.gif

And if the responses from these people are so ignorant, much of the "knowledge" of these baords is suspect also. This Disboards group is the friendliest, most informative, and most knowledgeable photo board I have seen.

I'm sorry that happened. I can only imagine how frustrating and aggravating that would be.

I haven't ventured to any of those other forums yet because - I agree with you about this board being incredibly friendly. So far each and every question I have asked has been answered in a friendly informative way.

Even when I have posted my photos asking for advice - suggestions - everyone has been SOOO nice. I didn't always agree with everything - but no one ever made me feel bad or like I was a hopeless case.

One thing that I do know - photography IS art - and while there are those simple basic rules in any art form - art is very subjective. What one persons finds to be fantastic another finds to be horrid.

Gdad - I have always loved your photography. Could you post the pic here so we can see it. I have no idea what dust on a sensor looks like and it could be a learning experience for so many of us photography newbies.

i got one of "those" responses when i made the mistake of posting a photo and question on a new site( can't think of the name, the forum is new, ddp or something similar) i agree, i don't mind if someone tells me something constructive but some are just plain nasty. just cause 2 have different styles doesn't mean it has to be terrible, it's just not your style..
i post ? on the magic in pixels and they seem pretty nice /knowledgeable as well but haven't posted photos mainly since i have no Disney photos..hopefully that will change if i can get there soon.
some photo websites i wouldn't ever post even a question as some on their forums seem to be bent on the destruction of (anyone but their own) egos:lmao: although i do sometimes wish we could have more interesting technique posts here in addition to photos/what camera should i get type posts. it seems like not so much of that anymore, i really liked the photo school type threads and they helped me dig through all the clutter in my mind to remember my ancient photography stuff buried under all the other stuff:teacher:

and Bobq is your name really patrick:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

When I am in line for "Soarin" it is! :)

Little known fact: "Patrick" in the preshow for "Soarin" (actually Patrick Warburton) played "The Tick" on television and was the voice of the wolf in "Hoodwinked".

You can learn alot from the people here as well. I know I have.

Absolutely! Hope it didn't sound like I thought otherwise. For example, after learning about the value of the 10-22 mm Canon lens here, I went and bought one:cool1: Can't wait to try it out!

I asked the mods years ago to add a photo board to DIS...I'm so glad they finally did it!

I can't say that I disagree. DPReview seems to have a fair bit of contention - I assume that it's the lousy forum software that naturally sets people off. ;) I do post sometimes in the Pentax forum at Steve's and have found it pretty friendly (although I dislike their forum software, too :) )... though there are of course one or two who tend to start up controversy, but even then, it's more for being hypercritical of the manufacturer's product (even though they like it better than anything else.)

Dis is definitely one of the friendlier places on the net - at least, the Photography section is. (Head over to DVC if you want some real dramas sometimes, though the bit troublemakers have generally been banned.) It's a bit of a change from my own forum, which has had its fair share of "I'm leaving and never coming back" dramas and even got one poster fired from public service. Now that's a forum! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

I agree this is a great board!

I don't understand why some people feel it is their duty to be nasty. You can offer constructive criticism and help the poster, but being nasty accomplishes nothing.

I think honestly, that some people are nasty because they are jealous.

Reply 4: Is this spot in the upper right corner dust on my sensor?

Now what do you think would happen if you restated the original question verbatim after all the irrelevant gobbledegook? No editorializing, no embellishment, no defensiveness, just leave it to the reader to infer that the original question was not answered yet.

Unrelated digital camera hints:

Is this related in any way? Sometimes I go to a lecture or presentation where slides are shown and, should a slide be upside down, faster than someone can honk behind you when the light turns green, someone in the audience shouts out a comment about it.

my bold...I'm guessing 3 more unrelated comments???? maybe the same comments reposted with a "can't you read nitwit" added???;) :)
( i'm not saying gdad is a nitwit... just picturing the chaos that might ensue after he challenged their "sage" advice ) don't know where he posted but some definitely seem to have megalomaniac tendencies on those "other" lesser quality photo sites:rolleyes1 ..i bet they even hate Mickey ( as in mouse)

When I first started posting here, I stated the exact same comments, how every other board has people who "wanna be professional" and treat anyone who is not the same calibure as a peon. No one is a "lets take photos for fun". They were and still are way to serious. :( I still lurk because the information is invaluable to me, but rarely do I comment.

I have gotten THE most friendliest, helpful replies from this board. I have learned *so* much! I love how people are newbies, never owned a digi to pretty talented, should be a professional photographer type folks. No one puts anyone down, everyone tries to be helpful. I love the shots here, stuff I might never see otherwise.

I will admit, I like the canon boards, and no one has gotten snooty with me, but I tend to only comment on the Arizona thread unless I have a question that has to do with the subject being discussed.

You forgot to list his most important role to date.
