We drive from CT to Orlando, it's like 22 hours. We also rent a car for the trip. Well the car rental is $419.00 for 12 days. For the heck of it I went to Southwest airlines and punched in our dates. Now mind you, the reason I did this was because I thought it would show me how much more $$$ flying would be. Well I was wrong. Round trip airfair for DH and me to Orlando would be $254.00. Now, as my title indicates I am petrified :scared1: :scared1: to fly. Our trip is in May :hourglass and I think I really really need to consider flying this time.

Please, anyone out there ever had this problem and overcome it? I'm freaking out :crazy2: just thinking about it, but...

You might want to check with your doctor...a lot of them will prescribe a sedative for the flight there and back. Several of my friends used this method to get through the flight to London last fall. You'll sleep through the flight and be refreshed when you get to Orlando, ready to have an awesome vacation!

I know logic doesn't always play into the fear of flying.

I don't mean that in a sarcastic tone.

But, it is, by far, safer than any other form of travel. AND, Southwest has a flawless safety record.

Just relax, save money, and have fun!

Will this be your first time flying? Are you truly petrified or just apprehensive? If you are not used to flying it is very easy to become fearful of the unknown. I know that bringing distractions helps some people, i.e.: portable DVD player, word search or ipod. The site below really helped a dear friend who never flew before take the mystery out of flying.

Good luck, and 3 hours in a plane beats 22 hours on i95! PS, Southwest is a great airline, we love, love, love flying with them!

I am also going to DW in May from CT and in the back of my mind feel apprehensive about it. :rolleyes2

However, we all take risk every time we get in a car but out of necessity we just do it. I personally avoid the highway but when I absolutely have to drive I turn on music or talk radio to relax and it works,,, to a degree.

I recommend you get things to distract you while you're traveling. A good book, crossword puzzles, your favorite music. Before you know it 2 1/2 will be over with and you'll be there... :flower1:

Oh boy, I hope you didn't just jinx them!!!!

I do not enjoy flying. however, it is so nice to arrive in Orlando after a short 2 hr. flight instead of a loooong 17 hour car ride. Also, the last time we drove down we saw 3 accidents along I-95 one where a car was flipped over. Statistically it is safer to fly. I bring 2 magazines and by the time I am finished reading them we are landing. :goodvibes

LOL, I'm quite sure I haven't. They have that record because they are good! Hope you have a wonderful flight and a great vacation!

If you fly from Bradley, its very easy and relaxing...LGA or JFK or totally different

I disagree about La Guardia. I don't think its that much more difficult and you can often get even better rates than Bradley.

Having said that, we flew with friends last summer and the guy was a nervous wreck flyer. His doctor prescribed two valium. One for the trip down and one for the trip back. He was fine.

I would always choose flying if the price was right. There's just no comparing three hours in a plane vs. 20 hours in a car. IMHO

Fly, it will give you more time in WDW!!! We aren't found of flying either. But 2days in a car , both ways, we just don't have that much time off work. So we fly. You have much more time to play there!!

Dont tell my DH or kids but I was shaking when I got on the plane to go to MCO the first time. I had to hold onto the seat so noone would see. I sat on the window side and started to get that yucky feelin in my tummy. OMY I ate the whole way down crackers muffins bagels anything I could get my hands on . Take off was great, very smooth. No turbulence in the air. Touchdown was smooth also. When I was in the terminal agian I realized I was the one that made my tummy sick. I brought crackers and muffins for the ride home and guess what. I ate a few crackers. I get sick on the merry-go- round and was fine for the flight home. Now I wonder why I was so scared, then realized I just dont like to experience new things. Could this be your reason. Or do you look up at airplanes and think Boy I hope that plane doesnt crash on top of me. I mean if you think it may come down when your on it then stands to reason they may come down when flying overhead. Right. My DS6 Says 10, 9, 8.....Blast off.

PS if you really think you may be nervous get a window seat and dont look down LOOK at the horizon, if you start to get an upset tummy. If you dont get air sick sit in the middle or inside seat and just people watch. It will keep you mind off where you are. I fly Song and Jetblue for this reason. They have TV screens for each seat. I watch TV most of the way.

Go FLY Have a great time. You will love how safe and fast you get to visit the mouse.

I am in the same boat as you...I am absolutely petrified of flying...always have been ever since I was involved in a serious car accident...if I am not in control, I HATE it..I will not drive with ANYONE, I have to be the one driving. Anyway, I found that if I have my portable DVD player, I can watch a movie and it takes my mind off of everything, the only thing I have to worry about is take-off and landing...which makes me want to :crazy2: !!!
Actually if you think about it there are alot less accidents involving a plane then there are automobiles, so relax and get there sooner, and that will be money and time saved!!!! Hope this has helped!!! And good luck and have a wonderful time no matter what you decide!!! :sunny:

Honestly I would stay as far away from sedatives and drugs as you can.

One, because if you make it through the first flight without medication then all subsequent flights will be that much easier. You'll say to yourself, "Hey! I did it once without sedatives I can do it again!"

And two, it's a cheap way to get over a fear. You can't overcome anything unless you face it head on. A lot of people use drugs for things like this and they are fine with that, but think how much more confidence you will have if you overcome this without medication.

Lastly why do you think airports have bars? ;) My sister is petrified of flying as well, or rather she was. The first time she flew I had to pry the Xanax from her hands, but after a shot at the bar she was significantly relaxed. It was a better and safer option than drugs and it made the flight just as easy for her had she taken something. There is less chance of an allergic reaction that way if you have never taken something like Xanax before.

Try to distract yourself with little facts as well. One good thing is to learn facts about the mechanics of airplanes. On our liftoft I distracted her with a running comentary of slat deployment and their function on airplanes. The rest of the way until she fell asleep I talked about the jet engines and wing designs. She was utterly fascinated and too busy trying to figure out how things worked to let her fear conquer her. (And mind you she is very prone to anxiety attacks normally!)

There are two steps that are key in conquering a fear. One facing it head on like you are planning to. And two, understanding what it is that you are afraid of. I had the same problem with sharks. When I was younger I was in the water during a shark attack, less than 8 feet away from the person attacked. I was terrified of all water but after studying sharks have learned enough about them to feel comfortable with the precautions I do take when in water. Then I faced them head on and I now make it a point to swim with them at least once every other year. Now thats a bit different than flying, but I went through the same anxiety. I got into the water and wow was my heart pounding. My breathing was very erratic when the first shark swam under me and it took me awhile to get it under control. But once I had I started distracting myself with facts. Like how they use their lateral line system to sense their surroundings and their dorsal fins to manuever. Now I understand planes are very different from sharks but the same concept applies. If you understand how the object of your fear works you'll calm down. The take off wont be pleasant, but I assure you that you can handle it.

Bring reading material as well. That helps a lot, or a portable DVD player as someone else already suggested. I'd say try to sleep, but when you are trying to fall asleep your mind wanders and thats not good when your afraid of something at that present moment. Stick with distractions.

Plus a little shot of Jose can go a long way in calming those nerves to. ;) Best of luck with it! Feel free to PM me if you need any plane facts to distract yourself with. :wizard:

For many alcohol is exactly the wrong thing to take for fear of flying.

If you are completely petrified, getting tipsy will just make it worse. Xanax removes the physical reaction to the fears. No shaking, no butterflies. It allows you to relax without zoning out. It helps you realize how easy it is to fly. And how much better it is to be in a 737 than on I95.

You may fall asleep if you take Xanax, but that is due to being relaxed, rather than the thing "knocking you out".

Holly took Xanax for a few of our flights, now she does it without.

Have you thought about taking Amtrak down if you really can't bring yourself to flying? It takes the same amout of time as driving but you don't have to worry about sitting behind the wheel for such a long time.

We either fly out of Bradley or drive when we go to Florida. This time we are going by train, per my DH request. On the way out we are taking thr train from Springfield (they have stations throughout Ct), has a layover in DC then straight to Orlando. On the way home we'd have a stop in Penn Station then up to Milford, Ct. Round trip cost for the 4 of us will be $618... can't beat that. Though Travelocity right now is running a deal from Bradley to Orlando begining April 1st through June 27th $103 round trip on Delta.

Oh and the train also has sleeper cars, but only sleep 2 (we'd have to get 2) and that was an extra $600.

Hope this info gives you anothe option!
