He saw his shadow . . . :guilty: I mean I know there will be 6 more weeks of Winter anyhow . . .but when it's been so Spring-like I'm finding it hard to believe that he saw his shadow . . .

Time to retire Phil and bring on some fresh young groundhog! :lmao:

I knew it! We really haven't had much of a winter but according to "Joe Fury" the weatherman, that is about to change next week. What does Chuckles, the ground hog from Ct. know anyway. He is blind and deaf! How could he possibly see his shadow. I think we need to get a new ground hog.

it's all a crock of crap if you ask me.

sorry - but really - winter still ends on march 20...it's been so mild...we have nothing to complain about if we get snow every week until then IMO.

and to all those in New England that don't want more winter...suck it up! The strong live in the Northeast I tell ya! Act like it!!

:teeth:

Our groundhog did not see his shadow. Early spring expected up here in Canada!!!

My Dad always says
If the groundhog sees his shadow there are 6 week more of winter

If the groundhog does not see his shadow it is only 6 weeks till spring

and I too heard that winter is about to really arrive next week
I hope they are wrong

This is what I don't understand about the groundhog....

If he sees his shadow, he runs back in his hole, and we will have 6 more weeks of dreary winter.

If he does not see his shadow, we only have 6 weeks before spring gets here.

Why is that? It seems backwards. To me, if he sees his shadow, it means the sun must be shining (spring-like)

If he doesn't see his shadow, it must be overcast and dreary. (winter-like)

:confused3

Wel,l considering that San antonio seems to have skipped winter all together, six weeks more or less isn't going to make much of a difference here.

I think the groundhog predicts the type of winter we will have. Cold dreary winter=a looooong 6 weeks while a warm, mild winter= a very short 6 weeks.

I am a New Englander, and it is not that I don't want anymore winter. This year, it is a case of not wanting winter at all! So far we have not had much of a winter, and I like it like this. :teeth:

We have been REALLY LUCKY here in New Brunswick, so we have nothing to complain about. Its hard to believe how mild it has been.

Well here in the Northwest it hasn't really been winter like, but way too much rain. Don't get me wrong I love the rain, I think you have to to live here, but I am sick of it. If Phil means that we will have 6 more weeks of this I am not too happy with him!

Stupid groundhog! I have a few choice, non-DIS friendly words to say about him.

The weather people have reminded us that the groundhog's prediciton is only for fun. It is not meant to really predict the weather.

Not that the weather people are doing such a great job, either!

Pux...y Phil predicted a Steelers victory in the Super Bowl. I saw him wave a terrible towel.

The local groundhog "Ivy" predicted six more weeks of winter too. Have to check on Buckeye Chuck .... I need spring.

No kidding! If this is global warming, bring it on!!! :rotfl2: The groundhog in Georgia did NOT see his shadow.

The groundhog is a scientifically proven phenomenon that exceeds the accuracy of dopler radar and other weather prognostications. I believe in ground hogs, I do, I do! ;)

Do you see all those lights??? Of course he saw his shadow!!! My dd watched it today and says..."Ah, Mom...how wouldn't he see his shadow with all those lights all over the place? Maybe if there weren't so many bright lights on he wouldn't see it!"
A little more winter would be nice...otherwise the plants/animals are going to be totally messed up!!!

I think the bugger is just ticked about being yanked out of his winter hibernation to see if he casts a shadow!

still a crock of crap.

I mean - Punxsutawney Phil is the "original"...and the one who is supposed to be the 'sole predictor'...and other states have "copy cats" now? What do they prove? is it 'state by state' now?

Now THAT I can agree with.

And who named the Connecticut groundhog "Chuckles"?

heheheh

from wtnh.com:

Origins of Groundhog Day:

When German settlers arrived in the 1700s, they brought a tradition known as Candlemas Day. It came at the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Superstition held that if the weather was fair, the second half of Winter would be stormy and cold. For the early Christians in Europe, it was the custom on Candlemas Day for clergy to bless candles and distribute them to the people in the dark of Winter. A lighted candle was placed in each window of the home. The day's weather continued to be important. If the sun came out February 2, halfway between Winter and Spring, it meant six more weeks of wintry weather.

Forget 6 MORE weeks of winter. How about giving us 6 weeks of winter?! Seriously, this is New England. Some of us want snow. Actually, it's becoming a health thing for me. My allergies are already giving me heck. I don't want to know what spring will be like if things never freeze

I don't care what you all say, I DON'T WANT WINTER AT ALL. :stir:

monarchsfan16 my allergies bother me year round, so bring on Spring.
