My DD had to read The Road for school earlier this year. What is it with all this modern 'literature' that is so apocalyptic in tone, starting back in elementary school with 'Hatchet' (& that school's obsession with Gary Paulsen) continuing on with Lord of the Flies and (yay) The Road?

She did get to read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" this year, said it wasn't nearly as depressing as almost every other book that's been assigned the past several years.

I didn't really like that movie. It was kind of nerve-racking for me. I especially didn't like the part when the dog was killed...I almost got up and walked out of the theater right after that scene. I thought Will Smith was really good in the movie, but I just didn't care for it.

I wasn't prepared for how scary the movie was. I went into the theater not really knowing what the movie was about (it was my DH's suggestion we see it). I did like it, mostly because I found it an interesting perspective on what life would be like to be the last one living. Obviously a very sad and lonely one and the dog scene I actually had to put my head down, I just couldn't watch it.
I didn't like the alternative ending, it was a little too cheesy that he would have been able to communicate with the zombies after 3 years of not being able to. Granted the alternate ending did show Dr Neville was wrong about them not having any basic human characteristics ( I forget the exact terminology), it showed that they still could love, but I think it was better that he died with his cure being saved.

I love post-apocalyptic movies and books, but they creep me out so much. I can't get them out of my head for a while after I see them...yet I can't resist watching them.

Yes, I agree...I wonder how The Road will be....that is such a dark book....
