I am just heartbroken!

I'm sitting here crying like a fool. The Mockingbirds who had so valiantly defended their nest of 3 eggs, lost all of them sometime last night. The eggs were within 2 days of hatching.

I know this is nature but right now I just feel so damn bad.

Oh, and I'd been following the mockingbird story all along. I'm sorry to hear this virgo. Those were your babies.

Thanks. I kept thinking, you need to get a grip but the nesting pair and I had developed a trust. They didn't bother me at all when I went to check the nest.

I can only assume it was a snake that got them. I was looking out toward where the nest is until sunset last night and I've been up since before sunrise. Unless the crows down here fly at night that pretty much eliminates them as the murderers. Snakes, on the other hand, do a lot of their dirty work at night. Also, I don't think Mockingbirds actually sit on their nest so they wouldn't have been aware of what was going on.

What's really sad is the parents are still defending the nest against the crows. I'm not even sure they know the eggs are gone.

Oh that is so sad. When I hear or witness something like it make me cry. A few years ago I was watching a mommy rabbit with her baby bunnies she had hidden in a hole in the middle of our front yard. She had patchs or her fir and grass over them.
Well when they got a bit bigger they would venture out of the hole. I tried to shag their butts back into it. One day a big ugly black crow swooped down and snatched up one the babies. Just thinking about it make me cry again.
I can still see the mommy bunny running frantically across the yard and what really haunts me is I can still hear the babies cry as it was being carried away.
Like an idiot I screamed and yelled at that rotten bird and even threw stones at him hoping he would drop the baby. I know it is the cirlce of life but it sure stinks!
