When I bought my condo in CA the people selling it were SO cheap with the repairs that they made. The garbage disposal had been replaced with a new one (12 years ago), but it was the BOTTOM of the line.
The garbage disposal was about the size of my fist - I am not kidding. When I had someone out when I was remodeling the kitchen, the guy laughed when he opened up under the sink. He said it was like a toy garbage disposal.
I couldn't put anything down it. It practically clogged with water.
I have a 37yr old disposal. Yep 37 years. Continous feed, never clogged, loud but it works. I put everything but corn husks down it. Steak bones, veggie peels, everything.
Oh yea, 1 other thing. I also have a septic system. You know, the thing "they" tell you can't use a disposal with. Wrong. Even the septic is 37 yrs old.
If the newer disposals are finiky, I guess I'll wait to replace it closer to my moving date because I know a new owner will have a fit if she knew how old it was!
I clogged mine up about 2 weeks ago with angel hair pasta. I was without a sink for 4 days till my husband got it fixed. He refused to let me call the plumber.
We no longer have a disposal. Old one broke a couple years ago, and we just didn't bother to replace it now that it's just DH and I here in the house.
In the winter stuff gets wrapped up and thrown in the dumpster, or some can be flushed in the toilet, and the rest of the seasons we take everything out to the garden area and it just decomposes.
When we re-did the kitchen with new cabinets, we moved the trash to a pull out drawer right beside the sink. So easy now to just dump questionable items in the trash not down the disposal - no more clogs! Probably cheaper to disable the disposal than redo the kitchen but if you're looking for an excuse to get new cabinets here ya go ...
