from someone who only bakes when she has to, and needs to follow directions on how to make Betty Crocker cake out of a box, this is HUGE for me.

I saw this in Family Fun and thought it would be perfect for our family Christmas party. My sisters do not have any faith...LOL. The sister who is hosting the party said she is going to order a back-up cake from her favorite bakery..."just in case"...PHOOeeY. LOL

That is really really cute. I too, am like you when it comes to baking but I have made some pretty cute cakes kinda on the line of that....a bunny, a snowman and a pumpkin....and they were actually pretty easy (and fun) and I was quite proud of myself...LOL!! I am sure you will do just fine too!!

Could you somehow send me the directions for that one?? I would really appreciate it and love to give it a try. You could pm it if you would rather do that....

Thanks!!
Lisa

That is really cute and I think you can do it! Maybe slightly freeze the layers to make them easier to frost. What type of frosting/icing are you going to use?

I can't tell by the pictures, but it looks like it's different layers stacked to form the tree, right?

I do cake decorating (i'm also a pastry chef student) and my biggest piece of advice is to make sure that you have support between the stacked layers and maybe a center support as well. I don't know what kind of instructions are listed for that cake, but a good place to go for information on cakes and stacking, etc is www.wilton.com .

Good luck!!

I saw this too in Family fun and wanted to try it!! Please let us know how it goes! Good luck :flower:

I would also bake the cake one day and refrigerate it overnight, and then ice it the next day. It makes all the difference in the cakes stability.

I agree with scarlett873, and I would dowel rod it also.

Another suggestion would be to use a more "compact" cake, like a pound cake. Or you can use any box cake mix and add an extra egg, and replace the water with milk, to make it more solid rather than fluffy.

Good luck..I bet you'll do great! :goodvibes

I bet you can do it! I'm no Betty Crocker either, but I made a super cute circus train cake for my daughter's 1st birthday, and I think it turned out pretty well. I definitely agree with those who said a regular cake mix will be hard to frost when you cut it up. My recipe called for pound cake, but I wanted to make a chocolate cake instead. Luckily I tested it in advance cause trying to frost the cut sides of a regular cake was very, very hard.
