I am getting nervous about this hurricane and how it is going to affect out travel plans and of course, I feel like a HUGE jerk about it. I mean people in Florida are bracing for the worst and I am worried about whether or not we are going to make it to Disney.

What do you all think? Do you think that this storm will affect flights on Saturday (when we are supposed to fly in)?

Hi,

It doesn't matter what we think! ;)

Just keep checking your airline's website and the MCO website and they will give you the updates you need. It's still too early to tell what flights will be affected.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Meanwhile, as you said, our thoughts are with the people in the landfall areas.

A dear friend of mine just lost everything as a result of Katrina and another friend lives on the west coast of FL (Palmetto), so this is really hitting home for me and I am worried about her, but at the same time I am worried about my trip, mostly the flying.

We will be flying with our DS and I worry about flying into a hurricane :(

I think it's fine to be worried about Floridians and your own vacation at the same time.
I would feel the same and I too am especially worried for all those who live in FL. I have friends and family in the Clearwater area. This hurricane season has been bizarre.
The thing to remember is the hurricane can change course a half dozen times between now and Saturday. They can project, but never know where exactly it will hit the worst. Orlando may just get some rain or they may be slammed like Charley last year. No one knows. I wish I could calm your fears, but just keep updated and call your airlines the day before. Disney will still be there if this trip doesn't pan out for you. :earsgirl:

And don't worry about flying into a hurricane. They won't do that, believe me. They either won't take off, or they will land somewhere else before they'd ever do that. :)

Don't worry about flying into a hurricane. If Orlando is hit by Wilma on Saturday MCO will be closed and your flight will be cancelled. There is no way they will fly you into an oncoming hurricane.

Just try to relax...it's nature at work and there's nothing you or anyone can do about it. But remember, airlines will not fly you into dangerous weather.

Last year our flight was cancelled, so don't worry about flying into it. They had generous rebooking plans in place. We are now scheduled for Monday, and I'll just keep an eye on it. (using the free tickets they gave us when they cancelled last year)

Did they give you free tickets in addition to rescheduling your existing flight? I mean I would completely understand if I couldn't fly this weekend, but I would HATE it if I couldn't even reschedule for a time after the hurricane passes.

We flew thru Ivan last year and I was nervous but the pilot said that the winds up high are always substantial and we had some turbulence but it was ok!!!

We are on the east coast of Florida, and the report just said we would get a 40% chance of rain on Friday and Saturday. I have an aunt over by Naples on the south coast so they are worried. Apparently their is a low pressure system they think could keep a southerly press on Wilma and keep it from moving up, also this pressure system is supposed to move it very quicly across. I would keep checking weather reports, and call your airline for updates. We are hoping for the best.

I am in Miami, FL. I just don't know what to think right now. The projected path that i see on the news here has Wilma coming right towards us~ if it still looks like that tommorrow, I may call around for a hotel somewhere as my electricity is always the first to go...We'll see what happens! I just pray that it takes a turn for the north back towards the ocean!!!

We have gone to Disney many times in 0ctober when hurricanes were about. They definitely will cancel flights, so don't worry about that.

We have switched flights and flown into Tampa and driven from there just to get there and avoid the many people who were trying to get flights after everything was cancelled.

Enjoy your trip!

Nancy

No they did not give us tickets as well as fly us again. We had a choice of getting back our money, or being able to fly at the same discount rate, whenever we wanted to (and they had discount seats..although the discount certainly didn't have ot be the $49) at no extra cost. They wouldn't be able to afford to give you another set of tickets as well as fly you..many planes are set down during a hurricane. It's also weather related, and not their fault, so really all they have to do is give you a refund, so we think it's a good deal.
They also offered to let us go down early, or a day or so late, our choice.

I have MNSSHP tickets for Sunday. Is there a chance they will cancel the party for that night? If so, I would rebook and fly in on Monday instead.

We are leaving Friday and I was also very worried about travelling. It looks like those of us leaving before Sunday will be getting into Orlando just fine. Then I got worried that once I am there, we will be rained out for days. I understand how you feel...how can I be worried about my vacation, when others are worried about their homes and belongings being destroyed in a hurricaine? I just think it is normal. Not sure about you, but we have been planning this for a while and have spent a lot of money on this trip, I think I deserve to be little concerned about being able to enjoy it. I also agree with the pp who said that hurricaines can change their course. My SIL went around the time of Rita and everyone was all worried about it. She said they didn't get anything but some very light rain. We'll just have to dump some pixie dust on this hurricaine and wish it out into the ocean and away from WDW!! :wizard:

(((((Livie's Mommy)))))

Thanks for that post - you said exactly what I was feeling. I have put a lot of time and effort, not to mention money into planning this trip as it is our first with our DS and I would hate for anything to ruin it.

Hugs to you and to everyone travelling during this time.

we arrive Sat @ 12:50 so I amn also
worried about our flight. We're praying that everything is okay!!!

My DH, 2.5yo DS and I have been planning this holiday for months and are due to fly in this Saturday. We also have my DH's sister, her DH and 5mo DD flying in from Australia to meet us there so needless to say the onset of Wilma is worrying all of us! We have also booked to go on the MNSSHP so are worried as to whether we will forfeit the party if the weather is bad.

We are staying at OKW and I rented points from a member, so if we do make it but are forced to evacuate, I'm not sure how our travel insurance would deal with that (if they would at all).

And yes, I too feel very guilty about selfishly worrying about our vacation when obviously the hurricane has the potential for causing much harm and devastating many people's lives...

Just wanted to say good luck to you with your vacation plans. It is so lousy when things like this happen. It is hard not to worry about it. They will probably not fly into anything, so I wouldnt worry too much about that anyway. I will keep everyone in Florida in my prayers!!
