I laughed to DH that I almost wish they would have furloughed us at my job. the extra $600 plus what I would qualify for would keep me at my normal salary. Instead, my hours were just cut in half hence my salary cut in half. Sorry to vent, it's great for those that can get it but frustrating on our end. Hoping can get bumped back up in hours real soon.

you can apply for unemployment for your cut hours. In my state you can at least.

Anyone who's bitter about people "getting paid to do nothing" should start by taking it up with trust fund babies and rich people who have never worked an honest day in their life.

If you're on unemployment YOU have paid into the system and it is YOUR money that you're getting back. I pay my fair share of taxes and am 100% OK with them going to give people a little bit more (or even a LOT more) so that they can feed their families and keep a roof over their heads, or even *gasp* take a vacation to relax from all this crazy stress. I'm one of the only people still working on my team, under an extreme amount of stress to deliver the work of 6 other people, and I wouldn't trade that for the gut-wrenching uncertainty of if/when I'm still going to have a job in the next 2 months.

The idea that this will incentivize people to stay unemployed is patently ridiculous - unemployment benefits are a short-term solution, no one voluntarily wants a multi-year gap in their resume and then to be fighting with all the people who were permanently laid off for positions from the very few companies who are even hiring after this. If you have a stable job that you can go back to after furlough, you're going to. If you want to use this time to be selective about the next move you make for your career so that you can be making a better salary or working in a healthier environment or get better benefits, there's nothing wrong with that. But to say that most people who are getting a slight boost in their income right now are just going to suddenly get lazy and never go back to work is silly.

Right because EVERYONE thinks about the long-term. There are plenty of people who live for today and don’t worry about what might happen to them in a few months.

As just a part of this unprecedented aid package, this is probably a drop in the bucket of all those trillions. At least this money we can see getting to people, unlike all the“pork” they managed to include in those trillions. At least the $600 is tangible. A lot of those other line items most will never benefit from, yet we will still have to pay in them.

This is why I can't get too worked up about it, though I get what the arguments against it might be. It's sad that we're so aghast at regular working folks collecting about $30,000/yr to live on, but we give away gazillions in tax breaks to giant corporations and the ultra-rich. Wouldn't want the serfs to have disposable income and start getting ideas!

You should be eligible under the PUA federal funding. There are quite a few exceptions and having your hours cut to less than 32 (iirc) Makes you eligible

I'm digging this unemployment information. I started work when I was 15 and only had a few months of unemployment which was my choice in 30+ years but everyone that gets approved, go get your $, it's all good.

As a grocery store worker still working I'm happy. You guys go get yo' money. You deserve it. Doesn't matter if you sweep floors or make burgers, I'd rather see it go to you than the millions that go to CEO's of corporations. Get yourself some good food, take care of your families, take care of your furbabies. ❤

Oldest DS was furloughed for two weeks at the end of April. He filed for unemployment. Not sure if he ever received anything or not. Even if he receives the extra $600 if would still be way less than he normally makes.

Luckily he had enough money saved that it was not a problem for him.

Just remember the extra $600 per week will only run until July 2020. After that your unemployment will go back to the $55 per week. Change up your tax withheld. If you owe next year then pay next year. Don't be one of the people that gives the feds a no interest loan because you want to get an income tax refund. Try your best to save as much as you can in an interest bearing account. It might not be a lot but it's better than nothing at this point and could help you in the long run.

Some people don't realize that $600 a week is what people would be able to make if the federal minimum wage were raised to a livable $15 per hour. I imagine how that idea horrifies some other people. Of course we'd still have to pay for health insurance and taxes and I'm okay with that too.

AZ here, my husbands unemployment take home is now $754 a week, which is less than he made working, by a lot. But it’s still more than $100 a week more than I bring home for teaching first grade- and I even get an additional stipend for being a department chair!

Yes I am shocked about it moreso than bragging. Like I said I never got more than $330 a week during the times I worked for GE. And yes, this will make others decide not to return to work.

I assume you won’t try to collect in June, July and August since school would typically be out for Summer Break and you aren’t really unemployed for those months,
If they send it to me, I sure will. With my husband making a six figure salary, the amount of taxes we pay is horrific. Finally a point and time we redeemed some of that after 25 years.

A better way would’ve been to pay everyone what they normally would’ve made.
There is no way they would have the time and means to look at paychecks for millions of people. This relief money was meant to help people who couldn’t work the means to get through for a short time. I can’t believe so many people are so concerned about what other people are getting. This was meant to be a fast and temporary fix to keep our economy from grinding to halt.
