I am FAT... it is "ok" to use the word in front of me.

Personally, I agree with the OP. Call it like it is, but why is your friend calling you fat or thick? Also, I hate, hate the word "Pooh sized". Again, call it like it is.

Well, we were discussing my trying to get in shape to do the Disney HALF marathon for next January. And I was specifically wondering about how much weight I need to lose to be able to accomplish that.

Please, PLEASE don't worry about how much weigth to lose to run the half. Worry about how many miles it is and how you will get from A - B and your training plan. If you can run 13.2 miles the weight will come off. You don't need to lose to run it, you need to get in shape to run it, BIG difference!

Just make a practical plan and you can do it. I can run 20 miles and weigh 170.

"Thick" appears to be a new word for fat that comes from young black women. The reason I am guessing this is that we work ( my buddy and I ) at a TV station that airs a TON of those court / judge shows. Young black women on these shows refer to themselves as "thick" instead of fat. I even noticed the one judge from Divorce Court referring to fat people as "thick".... she is also black.

So, my guess is that it started among black women, but now I have heard some white people use it too.

You know most Native Americans really don't care what you call us as long as it's polite. Most of my friends who are NA (short for Native American) call ourselves NA or The People and don't use either term. When we type about it we use the abbreviation NDN. Some still call themselves Indian and get up in arms about people being so Politically correct.

Pow Wow is always a hoot cause you have these people running around in what they think is tribal wear talking really loud and using the term, Native American in the most self concious way. I swear some think we are about to go wild and scalp them! :)

The only term most of us really object to is "Squaw" but Injun is almost as bad and any term using the word, "red" is not so hot either.

For the most part the white people make a much bigger deal about it than we do. In fact I would bet most people would not know a Native American if they fell over one. A lot of us look true to type but more of us don't and I have never heard anyone talk slow like they do in the movies.

Rant off.

You are who's ranting :confused3 Why are you assuming I'm white and not Native American myself? Have you read Vizenor? He has some interesting fiction on the topic--very funny.

When I refered to, "rant off" I was refering to what I wrote. It's common to call something you write passionaly about in a forum a "rant". It was in no way a remark that was meant to belittle you in any way.

I did not refer to you as "Native American" because you clearly stated in your post: "like coming up with Native American over Indian, which is a better descriptor and much more accurate than using the title Columbus gave them when he incorrectly identified them...)."

using the term "them", indicating you are not of that subgroup rather than "us" which would indicate that you too are of the people.

No, I have not read Vizenor. I have heard nothing about him until now.

I've also never heard "thick" to mean anything but dimwitted.

I have to add, IMO the expression "pooh sized" makes perfect sense here. But I'd think it was weird anywhere but a Disney themed venue.

ITA, I hate when people pussyfoot around the truth. I do try to use PC words but come on enough is enough already. I would hate to use the word thick because most people would think I was calling them stupid or "intellectually challenged."

A couple of more politically correct terms for "fat". :thumbsup2

Fat - Differently Weighted

Fat - gravitationally challenged

Fat - horizontally challenged.

Fat - horizontally gifted

Fat - People of Mass

Fat - person of substance :lmao: (my favorite)

I think it is usually OK to refer to ourselves however we want. I say I'm fat but I'd rather you didn't, LOL. Just call me "round". LOL

I know "thick" usually means stupid. As in "thick headed" and not *getting* something. But I also refer to DH as thick because he isn't fat. But he is "thicker" in his chest and tummy. He's a runner but doesn't look like the typical runner.

I think you should try for the 1/2 marathon. I think everyone should. Misery loves company!! LOL

I personally like "dimensional!" This was a phrase used by a lovely Scottish minister I knew in high school. He would refer to larger people as "dimensional." I use it all the time now...mostly in reference to myself!

You mean like 3-D :smokin:

I am well aware that I am very much very over weight. I wouldn't really like anyone calling me fat to my face, but if they did oh well. I am happy with myself and with who I am. Sure would be nice to be slim again, but as long as I can get around and enjoy my life who cares what others say or think. My big concern right now is to lose some of the belly so that I am more comfortable on the rides and such when we go on our trip next year.

Oldest DD gets angry cause she says she sees people staring at me sometimes. Again, I really don't care. I just laugh and tell her that they can't get over how big & beautiful I am. :rotfl2:
