I am crushed....canceling our Sept. trip.

DH suffered a hip injury recently and we just found out that the orthopedic surgeon doesn't have any openings to even SEE him for an evaluation until 2 days before our DL trip in Sept. It's such a unique injury that only 2 surgeons in our area do hip arthroscopy, and the other guy isn't covered by our insurance policy. It hurts enough that he is walking with a cane, but I had secretly hoped he could get an appt this week, surgery next week, and then heal in time for DLR in mid-Sept. Overly optimistic, I know, but I also thought about renting him an electric wheelchair.

If we can't even get an initial evaluation until 2 days before DLR, this means we have to cancel the Sept. trip I have been obsessed with planning. It was all looking SO good. I have itineraries. I made my ADR for Ariel's Grotto at a great time. I have maps from HoJo to DLR. jory29 was so kind and generous to have given us her Kids Suite reservation (with the Entertainment card rate!!!!). I have restaurant recommendations, packing lists, etc.

I want to cry but I'm at work....

This is a bummer! If it was me, though . . . I'd keep your reservations for the time being. You never know what might happen between now and then. Did you ask the surgeon's office to call you if there is an earlier cancellation? Why not go to the consultation, do the electric wheelchair at DLR and have the surgery after the trip?

How disappointing for you. Is there any way to reschedule your trip for a later date?

Thank you for your commiseration. I haven't canceled any reservations yet, but DH is in pain now, even when he's not walking, so I think it isn't fair to have him go to DLR before the surgery. I am hoping the surgeon will make room for him somehow or some other patient will cancel their slot.

Sadly, we can't reschedule until next Sept. as both our work schedules get crazy from late Sept. until June (due to the academic year schedule) and we don't want a summer DLR trip. Waiting a whole YEAR will just about be torture.....

So sorry to hear this. I know it must be such a disappointment along with worry over DH. Hope something works out for you.:flower3:

Have you asked them how soon they would get you in for surgery IF he were to get it soon? I have had a total of 3-4 hip arthroscopies which is very rare here to(you're not in Canada are you??), but even for serious cases, the wait time can be at least 1-2 weeks minimum-and thats for a very severe, special case.

If you haven't cancelled anything, call their office and let them of the situation to see what the worst and best scenario would be with him and see if you can find out any information.

I was born with hip dysplasia and have had about 9-10 surgery, including 3 major surgeries, in which I still made a trip to disneyland upon discharge(im nuts tho). I've done completely by wheelchair and being pushed and wasn't even able to sit up on my own, or weight bear, even feather weight.

I would investigate some more instead of jumping to your guns. Chances are, you can still take the trip there. Keep your chin up. You can PM me.

Oh I am so so sorry. Keep your chin up, everything happens for a reason.

Hey at least next year you might be able to see Carsland!! Get your husband all better and look forward to a pain free trip in 2012.

That is so disappointing, Smiles33 .

I had a similar need for a "non-urgent" surgery (yeah, non-urgent to THEM, but very urgent to ME!) and I got in much sooner than I expected because I kept calling in the morning to see if there had been a cancellation for that day. After about 4-5 times calling every morning, the receptionist promised to call me first if a cancellation came in. I'm pretty sure she just wanted me to stop calling :lmao: but within a couple of days she did call me with a cancelled appointment, and then I was also able to bump up my surgery in basically the same way, by politely saying that my schedule was flexible and would they mind calling me if ANY open slot opened up, and they did.

I mean, you don't want to be a total jerk about it and harass them every day, but the squeaky wheel does get the grease when it comes to snatching up those cancelled slots.

Good luck, and I'm so sorry this happened so close to your planned vacation :guilty:.

I'm so sorry about your trip - I'll keep my fingers crossed that the doctors can see your DH as soon as possible so you don't have to cancel! I can't imagine how upsetting it would be to have to cancel after you have put in so much work planning. Stay Positive

I'm so sorry :( Maybe it'll help to join our super advance planning thread?? We try to distract ourselves in the meantime. It'll give you both something to look forward to after his surgery.

Hate when life gets in the way of fun :(

Thank you all! The somewhat good news is he FINALLY got an appt for an evaluation tomorrow. I am crossing my fingers, toes, etc. that they can squeeze him in somehow in the next 2 weeks, which would still give him a month to heal. Is that too crazy? I think I have until 3 business days before check-in to cancel at HoJo, right?

*fingers crossed*

How does he feel about it? I mean, assuming you can get in that fast. I guess you won't know how it effects him til he has it tho, huh :(

I hope it all works out!

Wow, 3-4? I hope you don't need any more surgeries! Are you still in pain? DH had knee surgery (arthroscopy too I think?) and was a pretty fast healer. Now, he did sit on the couch a lot and we had an ice machine thing going to keep it iced, but he recovered pretty quickly. I just don't know if it's fair to ask him to do a DLR trip after surgery. Even if I rent an ECV, that's still a hassle for him. Sigh.

That's great news that he's getting in sooner. I hope, maybe you'll at least get answers sooner. Maybe there's still hope!

UPDATE! DH told me that the orthopedic surgeon is ordering some sort of special high contrast test to more precisely identify where the damage is and will try a cortisone shot. This is the most conservative treatment before going to surgery and *could* possibly be enough. I am so excited I can't help but think this trip might be back on.....but trying to remind myself that DH's health and comfort come first! HOORAY for more hopeful news!

Yay for good news! :cool1: Hopefully the doctor will have good news for your DH, and even if he still feels like he can go on the trip I would still rent an ECV. Be prepared to go slow, take lots of breaks (maybe a long one at the hotel mid-day) and just relax. And remember, even a little DLR is better than no DLR at all! :goodvibes:grouphug:

I have you beat. I have done this to my wife not once but twice. First time we had a anniversary trip planned and I tore my achilles tendon. Had to completely cancel the trip since surgery was to close to the trip. Fast forward 2 years and I blow up my knee (torn ACL/Meniscus) 4 weeks before another anniversary trip. She was really really mad. I tell her we are going anyway. Long story short I get surgery and 2 weeks later we go. I end up using a ECV but we have a great trip. Tell your guy to suck it up and go. :)

:rotfl2: Good for you to suck it up!!
My husband is going to DL with a torn achilles tendon (partial, no surgery) next week. He's casted, got crutches and we're renting an ecv. He figured he's got a few days off, why not. Now with the op's DH having a hip problem, jerky rides might not be best.

Hooray!! That was good news from the appointment...and Disneyland is so great with wheelchairs, etc. if he is still in any recovery phase! Here;s to hope and pixie dust!! :)
