I can hardly brag to DH about how clever I was when it came to buying his Christmas gifts, so I'm hoping my fellow DISers will allow a wee bit of self congratulation.
DH and I have a budget of $150 each to spend on each other for Christmas. Only, everything in Sydney costs a lot more than we're used to and we're both struggling a little with shopping. Here's an example:
I know DH would like a particular book. In Canada it was $30. Here it's $50. The new video game he wanted in Canada would have been about $50. Here it's $90. Everything is like this, and we haven't been here long enough to not compare the prices of everything to what they were back in Canada. (As a silver lining, though, there is a lot of stuff we just no longer buy because we can't justify the cost. Which is probably a good thing!
) I was getting very frustrated because while I could find better deals on line, the shipping to get it here negated any savings.
It finally occurred to me to try online stores in the UK. Sure enough, amazon.co.uk had that book and the video game at reasonable prices. AND because they are shipping outside the UK, I save the VAT which made them even cheaper, so even with shipping the game and the book were less than what I would have paid in Canada!!
Using my newfound shopping genius I completed the rest of my shopping on line and now everything is on it's way and I'm feeling very clever.
