My family and I were at the neighbors' today having a cook-out and catching up with them about their recent WDW trip. As we were watching their home movies, the neighbor said, "Oh, we have an extra Port Orleans mug you can borrow for your trip down in July." Immediately I blurted, "Oh no, I can't do that. Reusing mugs is wrong." Everyone just stopped talking and looked at me. And I stammered, "But, but, I read about it on the Disboards! The mugs are for single visit only!' And my neighbor (who had clearly violated this rule with her recent trip there) kind of glared at me and said, "Well, I didn't know I had broken 'the rule'!" Meanwhile my husband got his honey-you-are-obessessed-with-all-things-Dis look and immediately changed the topic.
Was I so wrong to try to educate others about all things Disney?
And does anyone else have to fight back the urge to correct friends/family/neighbors when they're so obviously lacking in Disney knowledge? ;) I mean, I feel like I need to educate the masses, but then I look so stupid/know-it-allish when I do it!
:rotfl2:

You were very correct in standing up for what is right! You are not supposed to re use mugs, and although there are those out there who do it, people like us do not.

Everyone should know my views on the mugs & that I think the old mugs are still good no matter what is said & that my family & I will continue to use the ones we bought at the Contemporary in January of 2000. Anway getting back to what the topic of this post. I think you sounded a little rough on your neighbors because they obviously didn't know this "rule" since a lot of Cast Members don't inforce but that's another story. So my opinion is that you went a little over board saying they are no longer good, because there are worse things in the world to get angry over. So they did not know the "rules" is that any reason to make yourself go crazy because of that?

My question to you is, why did you not tell your neighbors before going to WDW all this about the mugs if you wanted to teach them about WDW? Was it their 1st trip there & if it was I would cut them some slack.

Disney Dotty, I had a similar experience with my DH last week at the POP. While we were filling our mugs before we left to go home, he commented "let's be sure to bring these with us next time we come." I said, "well, technically, they're only suppoed to be used for the length of stay." Nerd that he is :goodvibes he then felt guilty for even suggesting that we reuse them. :rotfl:

:rotfl: Don't feel bad Dotty! :rotfl:
Your "blurt" was an honest heartfelt response!

I did something similar last week meeting my good friend's new boyfriend for the first time -- along with his two beautiful girls, 10 & 5. Half way through dinner I asked if they had been to Disney. When he said no, before my better judgement kicked in I spouted "Well, we'll have to do something about that! "
I got 'the look' from my hubby too. :rolleyes1

I guess since I want to live in Neverland, I have to deal with my childish outbursts from time to time. I'd rather do that than be a boring "grown-up"!

Can we have T-shirts made up with D. R. M. E. A. on them? Wouldn't that be fun, to get them in lime green and wear them to WDW? My daughter has a S.P.E.W. t-shirt (Harry Potter readers will know what it is) that she loves to wear, it's an attention-getter for sure. :teeth:

I have had to bite my tongue thousands of times when I hear incorrect info in various WDW discussions. I will interject if I know the person, but not if it's an overheard conversation at, say, the grocery store. I did have a now 'infamous' conversation with my dh's aunt about pool hopping. Evidently the last time she and her family had been to WDW it was perfectly acceptable to pool hop (about 15 yrs. ago!!). So, when she said that she carries a tote bag with their swim gear in it and then stow it in a locker at MK I had to ask why. Of course, it was to head over to the Polynesian for a quick dip!!! I was horrified. ;) I gave her the 'correct, current' policy. She didn't seem to much care and said they would take their chances. I never thought to ask her how it went.
But, if I hear something in passing, that could really negatively impact a families trip, then I may interject myself into the conversation...politely explaining what I know to be the 'real story'.

I get the look alot from friends & family (you know the one like you have 3 heads :teeth: ) My DS8 now just tells people "oh, she's talking about her DISboard friends again....." When people ask me about WDW I give them a little info & see if they are interested enough to hear all about it. I know I would overwhelm the average person if I tried to inform them of all I have learned so I just hit the highlights. My best friend calls me the "Disney Nazi"

Its amazing the things that we hear from other's that have been to Disney! Just the other day I was cutting my clients hair and she asked if I had been to Disney yet, I said, "No, not yet, not until August." She said, oh we love Disney World! And I really enjoy that other park that's close to Disney." I said, "Universal Studios? Sea World?" She says, "No. Epcot." I just said, "Oh yes, that is a nice park!" :rotfl2: And I don't think she realized that Animal Kingdom is there (she went last fall).

:rotfl2: I have to remember this the next time my SIL teases me. He keeps telling me he is going to "borrow" a mug just to see if he can get a rise out if me.

Good for you! I am just amazed at what some folks say and do down in Disney - totally going against the "Dis" code.

At DS's little league game the other night, one of the mom's decided to tell me all her secrets for a great Disney trip (DH started to squirm and gave me that pleading look that says "pease bite your tongue!") - her best secret was to get a note from her sister's pediatrician (her nephew has a medical problem) and use that at the parks to get what she calls her "magic pass" so she and her kids can get to the front of the line (neither of her kids are impacted with any health issues).

Thank God one of the outfielders made a great catch and I could stand up and scream . . . .

OP
You sound like me.
You did the right thing.

FYI:
The old refillable mugs are NO LONGER good for a lifetime.
I can understand if a guest bought a refillable back when the refillables were sold as a "lifetime'" mug they feel they have a right to use it.

My original All Star refillable was one of those. I thought what a great deal!

I still have mine but I never brought it back and I won't because I know Disney's policy has since changed.

It is just one of those things.
I aslo bought and paid a lot extra for a lifetime membership to a fitness club
called Elaine Powers back in 1976 . With that contract I would be able to rejoin any time I wanted for just $5 a month for a lifetime. What a bargin! Within two years they went out of business.

I still laugh about that one. Here I thought the contract was good for my lifetime but it was only good for the lifetime of the gym.

Such is life.

As longtime DIS member Bicker has stated before
"according to Florida statute, nothing is ever sold for "lifetime" but rather just until notification of termination."

That means (for those of you who do not understand law) the old mugs even thoses which were sold with FREE REFILLS FOR LIFE are no longer valid.

End of discussion.

Have fun at Disney! :wizard:

The key being here that it is your choice not to bring back your old mug when you purchased with a lifetime of free refills. It is up to other people whether they want to exercise their right by bringing back something that Disney will honour (and yes, they will honour them...not just College Program CMs, even managers too).

It is well within your right to not bring your mug back...but to tell others they can't because you got duped by a "get fit quick" scheme in the 70's is ridiculous. Stop making up rules and do something about what bothers you if it's that important. :thumbsup2

I think it's a waste of time complaining about or inventing rules without doing something positive about it. If you want change at WDW, then take some initiative. As I said in earlier posts, those who don't act can't complain. :wave2:

I understand how you did that. I am a HUGE rule follower too, annoys my family to no end sometimes. ;)

Also, IMO, that is really crappy for that woman to use a medical excuse like that for healthy kids. Talk about breaking all kinds of rules!

My first question was, WHO CARES? :rotfl2:

We are rule followers ourselves, and so will follow the mug rule (but as it's our first trip, I'd never have known that if not for the DIS). But then I started thinking...I WOULD care if another family cut in line, and I WOULD care if another family lied about their children's ages to get a child's price, so I guess I do see your point. :teeth:

But there will always be rule breakers, and that's what always makes the prices of everything go up. So I won't be "educating" anyone. It won't make a difference. People ususally know what's right, and choose to ignore it. I can't change that.

Thank You.

The new rule is posted which according to Florida statute makes the old "lifetime" contract null and void.

Thats just the way it is.

Do what you want since you feel you have the right.

Peace: :hippie:
Have fun at Disney!

I think you got your law degree the same place you look for fitness establishments.

I think you'll have a hard time convincing anyone that this is illegal. And people ask me why I find some of the Disers humorous! haha!

Far be it from me to get into a legal debate, but anyone who brings their mug back will have it honoured by Disney. For some reason, I don't see FL State troopers taking the Managing CM off in handcuffs after allowing the Guest to re-use their "free refills for life" mug.

Unfortunately, you've neglected to provide proof of any kind to back up your Florida statute claims and policy enforcement. Until someone does a DNA test, I'm not gonna buy into the whole Jesus had a baby theory either.

Have Disney Day!

I do the same thing! Recently I discovered friends of mine make it a point to poolhop at all the deluxe pools yet only stay at the DoubleTee in DtD! Needless to say I have dropped them from my next cook out! LOL!
