I admit it, I'm a tightwad!

Have you considered renting DVC points from either a company or a DVC member. You can stay deluxe for near value prices. You can still stay at a monorail resort (Bay Lake Tower or Villas Grand Floridian if your trip is a ways away), you can stay somewhere that is walkable to Epcot and Hollywood Studios (Boardwalk or Beach Club), a boat ride away from Magic Kingdom (Villas Wilderness Lodge) or with a view of the African savannah (Animal Kingdom). There's also our favorite Old Key West or Saratoga Springs. All of them are really great options.

We love deluxe amenities but won't do deluxe prices so DVC is the only way to go for us! Granted you can't get free dining if you rent, but you will more than make up for it in savings.

Good luck!

I've heard many times, this may be our only trip, only to read the trip reports from the next 5 trips. Save the $$, stay at AOA and then you can plan trip #2. :) We stayed at Pop on our last trip and walked around AOA. It is quite nice.

If it was me, I'd save the money. Someday, when I travel to WDW with just DH and the kids don't come along, we'll stay at the Poly or other deluxe. But right now it just isn't worth the extra expense since I know we won't make use of the deluxe amenities.

As someone who only stays at the deluxe resorts I would say Poly. I actually would agree with a pp and suggest renting points for a DVC villa at BLT or AKL. It would give you more room, an in room washer/dryer so you don't have to pack as much, and a kitchen to keep drinks and snacks (plus a quick breakfast) readily available. We love the Epcot resorts but we don't have small kids any more so we spend a lot of time in Epcot enjoying the restaurants there. Can't help with AoA at all since we have never stayed at any of the moderates or values. I would go with Poly or point rental for a villa.

So many variables!
First, whatever you do, you will have a great time, so don't worry about it or second guess yourself.

I second guess myself all the time, but I think these are the factors I would use to decide.

Summer or Spring Break? And planning to spend at least a day at MK (you should) and a day at EPCOT? Poly just to spend less time on the bus with hot sweaty people (not meaning any disrespect, I'll be one of those in about 2 weeks :hyper:) and less time outside in the sun waiting for buses.

Planning to drive instead? AoA and save the money regardless of season.

I'd lean toward AoA unless going at a hot and super crowded time. But that's me. I hate the heat. If you're from Texas, it might not bother you.

One other factor... do you just love, love, love boats? Score one for the Poly or POR.

If I read you right and you are only buying 3 day tickets, I think this is something I would not do. Look at the pricing for a 6 day. It may be worthwhile to have the tickets just to run into a park for a couple of hours in the morning at Rope Drop (for the thrill rides, especially), or a couple of hours at night. Having a ticket doesn't need to mean you spend 12 hours in the park. Those last few ticket days are cheap.

We love moderates and agree With others who said to drop the park hoppers..do one park well, then back to the resort and pool. PO also has the boat to downtown Disney which the kids will love.

I will have DS10, DS8, and DD4.

If these are the only resorts you are considering, Poly, hands-down, don't look back. AoA is fun to look at for 1 day. Then you are stuck with an uncomfortable, loud value resort with one, mediocre food court for your entire stay. Been there (with a 4 year old), tried it, will never go back.

If this is your one and only trip - Poly. It's gorgeous, two fabulous pools, electric water pageant at night, view of the MK fireworks from the beach, numerous food options, monorail to parks and more food options, I can go on and on. Is it worth $1000 more? - yup! Keep looking for discounts.

I agree with other PP's. If you can't swallow the $1000, look at a mod and split the difference.

OMG! Thank you ALL for the wonderful responses!!! Particularly the ones that say, decide and don't look back, you'll have a great time no matter what!! You are all wonderful!

:goodvibes Oh I LOVE putting in my two cents!!!
we dont do full on parks like most people, we may do a few days and then spend the time at the resort. so its your vacation right? enjoy it to the fullest! I personally, if I could swing it, would stick with poly. this way if you plan to spend alot of time at the hotel, well then your older kids get a awesome waterslide (this alone is hours of fun) you all get to watch the electric water parade, fireworks from the beach, your just a boat ride away from FW to attend the sing along, you can ride the monorail a gazillion times lol.....AoA, you would have to take the bus (or drive) to get around and possibly see the water parade etc.
oh and best of all, you can have a lapu lapu!!! :thumbsup2

You guys have convinced me to either stay at The Poly or stay off site! So that is something. I REALLY want to stay at the Poly, I'm just having a really hard time paying for it! I'm too tight!!

Me, personally: I would spend the extra for the Poly as long as it wouldn't put me in a financial bind. It WOULD put me in a financial bind, which is why we are staying moderate. (since I chose dates that apparently aren't predicted to get ANY DISCOUNTS!!) But if I could afford it, absolutely, Poly, hands down. I've never stayed there but have eaten there and strolled the grounds and it looks amazing. Have a great time no matter what you decide. :)

lol! Now you have convinced me that you really want to stay at the Poly.
It's lovely. Enjoy! :thumbsup2

I've stayed at AoA twice and Poly once, the rest at POP. If this is your first and only trip Stay at Poly, the pools are great, the slide is great, the beach and fireworks are great, and the mono rail is great.
Did I mention how great i thought it was :rotfl:
The AoA is nice also but not the same ...

Hands down the Poly.... :thumbsup2

If we could afford it, we would love to stay at the Poly once. But instead we stay at CBR which has a wonderful tropical motif with beautiful sandy, white beaches.

Another vote here for AKL, beautiful resort, zero entry pool and kids will love it, and definitely cheaper then Poly.

PS-If this might be your ONLY trip to Disney, why are you only spending 3 days at the parks? Try getting 5 day passes. Are you only doing 3 days purely because you want
to save money?

I will have DS10, DS8, and DD4.

Port orleams Riverside has rooms for 5. They're refurb end just a year or two ago. Great resort, great room. I can't recommend it highly enough. We got it for $189 a night and free dining in December, 2011. Berry good value. We had six in there (daughter was 2) and it was fine.

I think I will be one of those to go against the grain and suggest a moderate... POR...

And here is why I say this...I was one of those who said we would go either just one time or maybe... maybe once every 4-5 years. That was in 2007...we are now going on our 5th trip. We splurged on a holiday trip last December and the kids wanted to go back so bad that we are going again in August...oh and did I mention that I then learned about runDisney and even though I had never run a day in my life, I love Disney so much I am now going back with a friend in February to run the Glass Slipper Challenge. So that is now 3 trips in 14 months for me.

If you start at a deluxe and decide you love it and need to go back, you may really want those deluxe accommodations again. We started at ASMovies when the kids were 3 and 5. We learned that Pop had its own bus vs sharing at the All Stars so when they were 5 and 7, we did Pop. Our next one, there was a 30% of Wilderness Lodge and with the kids now at 7 and 9, the pool made a bigger difference so WL it was. For our December trip, we changed our reservation 4 times, the deals kept coming out between room discounts and free dining...PO French Quarter to WL to Poly and ended up at Grand Floridian cause for our once in a lifetime Christmas trip, GF was the epitome for us. We are now going back to GF under a fantastic deal with a travel agency. We have upgraded each trip as the kids got older and I don't regret doing it that way. One trip we will also do a moderate but I see that as more of a hubbie and I trip and we would probably do POFQ.

AoA is suppose to be great but you can fit a family of 5 in POR and save even more, making it possible to either add more vacation days (if your schedule allows it), add more about park days (if cost was part of the reason to only do 3 park days) or even spurge on a different restaurant that you might not have tried. And by saving, if you really love Disney as much as the rest of us, you can always put the extra money in savings and you already have part of your next trip!

I am also in the camp that I don't think 3 days is enough. Five trips and we still haven't done a waterpark cause the kids can't decide which park to give up and we are still seeing new things each trip. Park hoppers are the same price whether you are buying 3 day tickets or 6 day tickets. But the more days you add on, each day gets cheaper to add. For us park hoppers are worth the extra cause it allows for more flexibility. Each trip my kids get excited for a different thing. Last trip, my son, 10, loved the Sorcerer's of the Kingdom game at MK and wanted to go back each day to get the free cards and play a new game. If we didn't have hoppers, we would have had to say no cause we are going to this other park that day. We don't plan too many table services so that if there is a night where we had no plans, the kids could request a park if they missed seeing something or wanted to go meet another character or ride a different ride.

Are you going under any deals? I don't remember seeing what time of year you are going but more than likely there is always some deal to be had. We have never paid full rate for our vacations and every little bit helps!

No matter where you stay, you will love it! Poly is my dream resort... my family never went when we were kids. My brother and I went for 2 days with my grandmother and her 70 year old sister... needless to say it wasn't a wild and crazy trip! We did small world and Hall of Presidents and not too much more. My parents booked once at the Poly but had to cancel, now as an adult, I'm guessing for financial reasons. So Poly is that resort that is my one resort I really want to stay at. But being the mom I am, my kids or the money always win out. Even this next trip, GF was cheaper than Poly by over $600 so I couldn't justify staying at the Poly. But that all being said, I have never had a bad trip cause I didn't stay at the Poly... I know one day I'll get there and it will be amazing!

I know I'm writing a short novel but there was one other thing I wanted to add. Do you have a Target near you? They have a debut red card that you can save 5% on your purchases including Disney gift cards which are tagged as entertainment cards. If you have prescriptions too, for every 5 you fill you get an additional 5% off. I actually paid off my trip all with gift cards... it was a lot of them and I did get looks buying 35+ $50 gift cards but I saved $300 in the end. We will end up charging food and purchases to our room and I plan on paying that off with gift cards too, saving probably an additional $150 or so. If you font have a Target but do have a BJs, they sell $100 Disney gift cards for $97...not as big as a savings as Target but it is still something. Just wanted to share if you are looking to make your money go as far as it can.

Pick the Poly. It's perfect and beautiful. If you are only going once indulge yourself. You won't be sorry.

Katie

Rent DVC points and stay in a villa. More room, laundry, deluxe accommodations, and less than the Poly.
