"Who did we get our independence from?"

Caught me quite off guard. I thought that was pretty common knowledge.

Anyone else want to admit that they didn't know either?;) ;)

I know who we gained our independence from (the English, see, I'm not pretending!)

I just wanted to share my amazement that someone, who is a citizen of this country, would not know this. They must have slept through American history.

Wow!

Yes, well they also wanted to know why England had control over us that we needed independence from them in the first place.

Wow!

But, you're assuming that they are citizens of this country. Are they Kristy? Or are you not sure?

Oh yes, most definitely they are.

Yes, I suppose I was assuming. And when you assume, you make an a** out of u and me!

Now, back to the thread!

Sad, sad, sad. If those are your "peers," you need to aspire to get a better job. Being around stupid people drives me NUTS!

OH yeah! That reminds me of this girl in one of my high school classes. We were talking about the building of the panama canal, and she asked why we didn't just use submarines to go UNDER the land bridge. Yeah, it was one of those social stuidies classes where they didn't offer advanced sections (honors, AP, gifted). Those classes were real eye-openers.

On the news last night they were going around Lake Eola before the fireworks and asking people questions about the 4th of July. When one man was asked who we gained independance from he said...FRANCE. And yes he was an American Citizen. What is even scarier is the high school student who didn't know one thing about that portion of American History. Isn't there some saying about those not knowing history are doomed to repeat it again?

***Hands Doc Rafiki a step stool*** so she doesn't hurt herself getting off that high horse.

It doesn't surprise me. I have a sister-in-law who thinks history is stupid and useless. Ever notice how people like that tend to make the same mistakes over and over?

Oh I'm sorry I insulted you. Let me do the PC thing and pretend to be stupid as well.

actually, dear, your snobbery insulted Kristy. the woman works very hard at her job. we all don't have $100,000 educations, after all.

Now that IS awful! I guess for some, Independence Day is just a Holiday from work and a reason to get drunk.

Thanks "dear" for advice on snobbery. I wouldn't be insulted if somone implied that my coworkers were more stupid than I am. Hey, my last boss was an idiot, so I knew I didn't want to stay there.

And what are you implying about my education, as if I didn't work my *** off to get it and don't continue to work my *** off to pay for it? Trying to imply that it was handed to me on a silver platter? Bring it on.

I thought you were out of work right now.

Actually, I find that immigrants who have become Naturalized are much better informed about U.S. history than most Americans. Sad but true:(

No, I quit the idiot boss job over a year ago and started doing relief work last fall. I got a permanent job here in November and worked the 2 jobs until I moved here in December. Thanks for your concern.

Did I sound concerned?

Very very sad. I have to say, I've always thought my history and geography knowledge were severely lacking. We had ONE geography class in jr high and none in high school. In history class, I don't remember ever studying anything later than World War II. I'm clueless about Vietnam. I came from a state with one of the worst school systems, so I'm really shocked to hear stuff like that.
