I-95 Southbound - Any really "scary" exits?

When we drove down from NY with my in-laws back in 2001 we made a stop for gas off of I-95. I don't know where we were (NC or SC I think) but it was really a creepy town off the highway. Timewise a stop in Walterboro, NC for lunch would work out well for us on our second day of driving - just not sure how it is there. Just wondering if anyone knows of any exits NOT to get off at.

A couple of the Fayetteville exits looked a little creepy!

I believe Walterboro is in SOUTH Carolina! We had a not so good experience there one time at a hotel, & we will not stop there again if possible.

This is a very good question--.
We always gas up (or try to ) at a gas station we can actually "see" from I-95. Many aren't exactly the models of cleanliness, but at least those just off the I-95 exits are "busy" enough to be relatively safe. We drive down all the time, and I can't say we've had a problem with that approach.

Yes JudithM, Walterboro is in SC (I typed an "N" instead of a "S" - LOL!) If you don't mind me asking, what was wrong there? I am looking to make a lunch stop - not much more than a burger at McDonald's. Is the area seedy or was it just a problem with the hotel?

On our last trip down, we had gotten off near Fayettville (I think it was at exit 49) and had lunch in a really nice Denny's attached to a Holiday Inn. Now, I know it was only Denny's, but it was a really nice one. We were pretty pleased. The staff was ultra friendly and our waitress, after we told her we were headed to WDW, yelled across the room to her manager "You take the rest of my tables, I'm going to WDW with these ladies!!!." Then she turned to us and asked, "When y'all coming back?" We said in about 10 days, and she said, "10 Days! I've got a hair appt tomorrow. I can't sacrifice fun over beauty!" LOL She was a riot. They were all so much fun, it was really a great start to our trip and a great boost to our moods during such a long drive. :D

Walterboro has two exits, 57 and 53, that are perfectly safe and have good food and gas opportunities.

Also, you might consider Exit 77, St. George.

We have stopped in Fayetteville NC, Florence SC, Rocky Mount NC,
I would rather stop in NC over SC, don't ask me why, I just think its nicer.

This thread caught my eye....we drove down in 2002 (never again) and had a VERY scary time at one of the exits in Georgia. Neither my DH nor I can remember the number. It had a burger king and a wendys...we seemed to have meandered into a gang night and no one looked or acted friendly--even the clerks behind the counter. After not getting waited on in the burger king line (they kept taking orders from the kids shouting out on the main floor of the restaurant), we thought it best to mosey on out quietly and go on to the next exit. I will NEVER forget that. It was not a nice feeling.

WDW on JUNE 24::yes:: :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsgirl:

This is good to know. We may drive down in the fall and I wouldn't want to stop somewhere that isn't a "good" area. Annmarie

It was mostly the hotel. We got to the hotel & into a room, & there was no hot water. The lobby area had a funky smell, sowe weren't disappointed to get out of the hotel. They did give us our money back. It just left a bad taste in our mouths.

I like UncleRomulus' idea of an exit with lots going on.

Where have you stayed in Fayatteville?

There are many hotels right off of 95 in Fayetteville. I know there is a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, and a couple of others we stopped at and couldn't get a room.

We stayed at a Sheraton (but it is not a Sheraton anymore) It is in the process of being taken over by Clarion. It was not a place I would stay at again. BUT it is being taken over by Clarion, so they may get their act together.

I agree about the gas stations. We ONLY stop at stations that we can see from the road. Usually they have those really high signs that you can see from a distance so you know they're right at the exit. We don't venture off the beaten path.

As far as hotels go, it's really hard to know what you're getting until you get there. We have stayed several times in Savannah and have had pretty good luck there.
