We will be driving I-95 down to the Fort from PA. We will be stopping over for one night on the way down and again coming back home. I'm looking for some suggestions on a nice campground not too far off of 95 both North and South. I know there are several KOA's and they are possibilities. Just wanted to check in here first to see what everyone here recommends. :) Thanks!

PBT2,

This is a frequent topic here. Help folks out by letting them the general area you might be in when you are ready to stop overnight in both directions. Will you be down near Savannah? Jacksonville? Richmond? etc.

Also, the Search tool on this forum can help you find past threads of this sort. There is also one still on page 2.

Good luck!

Bama ED

Yeah, Ed nailed it pretty much, without a general sense of how far you want to go would depend on suggestions.

But if your just comming down I95 from PA then I can make the following Suggestions that are still a reasonable to or from FW.

Farthest North - South of the Boarder campground. Nothing special but level and cheap for an overnight. About 12 hours from FW.

SC I95 Exit 53 - New Green Acres - Level, huge pull through sites. About 7 hours from FW.

SC I95 Exit 33 - Point South KOA - More trees but friendly staff and level sites. About 6 hours from FW depending on stops.

I will tell you to avoid Santee Lakes campground. Not very level, lots of trees, and unless they redid the bathrooms, I was more scared about their condition then disappointed.

From De. we used the new Green Acres in SC on the way down and for the trip home we stayed at The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids NC

We have stayed at Ft Clinch in Ferandina Fl. It's more than half way. It's at the top of Fl. It's right on the water with a nice little beach. It's on Reserve America so you can make sure there is a space when you get there. Makes for an easy drive to the fort.

From I think FL would be way too far, even Savannah is breaching too long for anyone to be driving.

We leave from NoVA, and with stops its usually 12 hours on the road before we get to Point South KOA, sometimes 11 if the stops are quick. And thats another 6-7 hours to Disney depending on stops and traffic.

Last year on our way south we stayed at Fort Chiswell RV park in Whytheville, VA. Very quaint little park. Has a pool and full hookups. At that time it was $33. Concrete pads were nice and level. In fact we didn't even unhook our toad. We would definitely stay here again. Depends how far you want to travel....this would make a nice overnight stop. Directly off of 77. Very convenient .

We are at North Jacksonville/St Marys KOA right on the Georgia Florida line. Nice campground and the service has been great. Really convenient to 95, level pull throughs so we didn't even unhitch, they delivered dinner right to our site (pizza and barbecue). It was a long drive from SE PA, we did almost 800 miles today, but we can get a good night sleep and we only have about 200 miles tomorrow morning.

Not sure where we will stop on the way home yet.

Glad you guys are making such great time! DH was talking yesterday about possibly taking 301 down and by passing DC traffic. We wont be able to leave until probably 1 or 2 in the afternoon. Hope you guys have a great time!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think we are leaning toward staying at New Green Acres on the way down. They also have a AAA discount. I'm not sure where will stay on the ride back home. I don't like thinking about the trip back home lol. That means we will be leaving Disney and the fort. :)

This is the route we always take plus helps to avoid the tunnel issues, a couple of spots with traffic lights but we usually try to stay out of the right lane as a lot of folks turning in and out of all the parking lots it tends to back up, most spots are 3 lanes in that area.

Anyone wondered off I95 to Jekyll Island?
We do the MD to WDW drive in 14.5 hours. We drive all the way through on the way down. We leave at midnight (avoiding DC traffic at all costs) and are at the FW for an afternoon check in :). Coming back though, we anticipate breaking the trip up a little.

I hope our snow melts in the next week just in time for me to open and pack the P/up. Seriously craving Florida sun and warmth. This winter put me over the edge with the "polar vortex" things.

We stop at THE NEW GREEN ACRES 4 times every year .. It is a good easy in and out CG for an overnite. Nothing new about it other than the name . Do not pay for their cable it is fuzzy and basis TV reception is very good. There is a Crackle Barrel at the same exit. Last trip north we stayed at the Walmart the next exit north from GA CG . Safe travels !!

Not sure how you can do MD to Disney in 14.5 hours unless you are flying down the highway. I know in January after my truck break down I went from Rocky Mount NC to Disney with only 3 bathroom stops and one fuel stop and it took me 12 hours running around 65 the whole way.

Well, I sort of agree with their figure.

My house in Maryland is 870 miles to Disney.

Travelling at your speed of 65 miles per hour with NO stops, that is 13.4 hours.

So if they made 4 stops for gas and bathroom of 15 minutes each, they could do it in 14.5 hours. Hopefully they have 2 drivers and can sleep in a moving vehicle - I can't. I'm pretty close to Virginia, so I will assume they are driving faster if they are further north in Md. And I hope they always arrive safe - I've seen some nasty I-95 wrecks over the years while travelling to Disney - many of them are RV's.

I use two days, and stay over night on the way.

I rarely leave when I want to (if I plan on 4am it will be 5:30 before I get across the Wilson Bridge and through Springfield) and then I have to stop at 7-11 for coffee and a donut, a minute and a half from home.

Then I see Cracker Barrel and I need breakfast. Usually around Roanoke Rapids, and if I stopped for Cracker Barrel at Ashland I'm stopping for Starbucks at Roanoke Rapids. And the list goes on. If it says Welcome Center on a sign, someone wants to stop.

Then there is that pesky outlet store....

So for us it is a two day trip and we are not in a hurry, nor are we exhausted on arrival. I like the way we travel.

Keep on driving safely!

Judique - We use 2 days for the trip down as well. Manassas area (take 234 to 95 to avoid DC metro traffic period) and if we leave between 8-9 pm we are usually at point south by 7ish. That is limiting stops/downtime, but when on the highways usually running at around 65mph.

The only reason I did the run from NC to Disney was I broke down the Saturday we left and was not repaired until Tuesday afternoon. With that sort of delay I was going for the hail mary of travel to get down there.

Rest assured we are not driving speed demons. For those interested in how we can do 14.5 hours...We are 30 minutes outside of DC. Highway all the way. We drive at night minimizing traffic. We do the speed limit. Noting that in the Carolina's, I think the speed limit is about 70. There are 3 drivers. Been doing the east coast run many times and it's 14.5 hours with minimal stops. We don't stop for long, rather we utilize the rest stops for picnic style breakfast, lunches potty breaks and some jumping jacks. We tow a p/up with an expedition, thus getting great gas mileage still. We were considering moving up in the RV world but I don't want to sacrifice the fuel or deal with the towing of another vehicle. Our FW trips are always 8 or more days, so we don't feel rushed. We have alot of energy for the trip down but from experience, we now break the travel into 2 days coming home.

Safe travels everyone.

Great that you have 3 drivers!

I'm a control freak who likes to be the driver. So even with other drivers, I'm usually driving and they sleep like babies and I just keep on driving. I've done Maryland to Jacksonville, Florida last year on one of my trips and could have easily made it to WDW, but I had a free room booked there so I stopped for the night. Usually I do Florence or Savannah, but I've also left late in the afternoon and just gone as far as Rocky Mount. I always stop for the night, mostly because I like to take my time and I do a lot of stopping.

Even with several drivers the vehicle needs down time also. The summer heat is very hard on a tow vehicle.
