I-77 Overnight Hotels

We will be driving from Toronto for the first time and and wonder where others stay overnight (cities/hotels) or if there are any places they would avoid.

We are planning to get to Charlotte, NC for our first night.

We drove from Hamilton last August and stopped the first night in Statesville NC - it is just shy of Charlotte. It is cheaper as it isn't "a big city". We stayed at the Red Roof Inn. It is just off the highway - easy to get off and on. There is a Starbucks across the street. It was clean and cheap!

There is a nice area just north of Charlotte. It has a beautiful new mall right off the highway called Northlake Mall and there are many great restaurants and hotels.

We're stopping at the Drury Inn - Northlake. If previous experience at the Frankenmuth, MI Drury Inn is any indication, it'll be great. Once you get to a Drury, you don't have to leave. The requisite free breakfast...but also free supper, free alcohol (three drinks), free pop, free popcorn, even free long distance to Canada. Can't recommend this chain highly enough.
