I-75 congestion in GA during Spring Break

We've driven to WDW for Spring Break a couple of times and experience a number of accidents and construction problems south of Atlanta. (Last year, our 17 hour trip took 23 hours!) Does anyone have any advice for avoiding accident congestion/stoppage and construction problems on I-75 in Georgia? Looking at the atlas, it looks like route 19 west of 75 or route 129 east of 75 could be alternates, but we've never deviated from 75--we've always waited it out. Any thoughts? Any locals have any advice? Where can I find construction info for late March/early April?

I am bumping this up because I want to know as well. I was in that nightmare last year and vowed never to take I-75 thru Georgia again! Many have suggested I-65, followed by a route (unknown by me) that angles to I-10 and over to I-75 near Lake City. Longer, but less congestion. Any advice would help here!

We broke off and took US 41 due to construction-I beleive this was north of Atlanta though. I would suggest night travel through this area, even though we experienced back ups during fall break in October-we were delayed around 30 minutes total.

Hey guys, this is my area and even I don't get on I-75 anytime of year, it is always backed up. I will do some local research for you about the roads you mentioned but what I need to know is are you planning on getting on the roads before/after you come through downtown Atlanta (if you are coming 75 that way)? My suggestion is to hit downtown late, night time driving is the least path of resistance, and barring an accident on I-75 south you should have minimal back ups unless construction and the problem is they always have construction and we never know until a short time before it happens. You said route 19 west and route 129 east, is that correct? There is always hwy 19/41 which runs parallel to 75 all the way done to Hampton GA. Maybe a little tricky to get back on 75 will have to check this. It is a main highway and has many stop lights, and as long as it isn't race week you should be okay. Also hwy 42 in Stockbridge GA ( my route I take) will take you all the way down to Locust Grove GA which is much easier to get back on to I-75 and most of the traffic and construction are gone by this distance down 75. I will review and research other routes, but need to know in you experience where you want to get off I-75 to the alternative route?

I'm open to any suggestions...we've never had problems north of Atlanta or even in Atlanta...our accident/construction problems are always south of Atlanta and usually south of Macon. I'm willing to get onto an alternate route just about anywhere! as long as I don't have to sit on I-75 for 5 hours like I did last April!!!!!

I figured out what I was rambling about before. Many of my friends say that they take I-65 to Montgomery AL. Then they get on I-85 for a little bit and then get off on US 231. They take 231 until they get to I-10. Take I-10 to I-75 South. They claim it is a less traveled route, but you must be wary of the speed traps on 231. It beats that I-75 mess!

We have taken this route and it is not bad but it did not seem to save much time as you spend alot of time on 231 traveling through smaller towns. We hit a delay going though Troy, AL but that was during November so I don't know if it would be any better(or worse) during a holiday. I would think that Troy U. would be on break so there may be less people around town then.
