Hysterectome Question

I went to the doctor today and we decided to go thru with the partial hysterectome 1 overy and my uterous. I am not scared or upset. I actually want this before the girls come home so I will not be in pain anymore. What I am wondering is have any of you had a laporoscopic (sp?) hysterectomy. The doctor said I would only be in bed a few weeks and it would be better for me. Seeing as Lilly will hopefully be home soon that is good. They cannot do the surgery until Nov. 22nd (Happy Thanksgiving) so that will give me a few weeks to recover I think. Any knowledge would be great. Thanks

I had a hysterectomy about 5 years ago. But because I had a massive tumor they had to do it the old fashioned way, cutting me open. It really wasn't painful. And I can't imagine the lapriscope would be either. The main thing is get up and walk as soon as the Dr tells you too. Its very important and makes a huge difference in your recovery.

I''m not sure what the circumstamces are requiring your surgery. But if you've gone through any of the problems I had, then I'm sure the surgery will be a huge relief. I know it was for me. Also be aware that this will start menopause early.

I had a hysterectomy nearly two years ago. The best thing I ever did! God, I love living without periods and pain and all that unpleasant stuff. I wish I had done it ten years earlier! I had it done the regular way and I'm guessing that doing it laproscopically would be much easier.

There is a website called hyster sisters. I cannot recommend this site enough. They have a wonderful message board, supportive members, and all the information you could possible hope for. I went there a lot after my surgery. Every time I went there ready to ask a quetion, it seemed somebody else had already asked it and a dozen people had answered it. It is an amazing resource! It takes the mystery out of getting a hysterectomy!!!! Please check it out; you will not regret it!

Good luck to you! It's a breeze, really. I didn't experience much discomfort at all. In fact, I had a hernia repair three months before the hysterectomy and honestly, I thought the hernia repair was much worse! HEY you think having surgery on Thanksgiving is a treat how bout this one? I had my hysto on December 23rd! Mind you I never felt better in my life .. no more pain, no more mood swings and no more bleeding till I passed out. Apparently as soon as they took out my ovaries (both gone) my colour pinked right up! Now I was in for about 7 days but it was a small town and there was no push to clear out bed & don't forget here in Canada since we have health care coverage there was no cost to us. Biggest problem I had was the itching as the scar healed. I don't mind taking a pill every moning for the rest of life!

On another note my sis just had one last spring- surgery didn't involve a scar (if this makes sense since regardless of how i try to put this DIS blocks it?? ) and I was suprised that they discharged her the following day! She healed really quickly. Other sis had gall bladder removed laporoscopicly and she was up & around in no time

I have a friend whose husband is a gynecologic oncologist. He is one of the few docs in town trained to use the Da Vinci machine. From what I understand, he makes several tiny incisions and the Da Vinci is a robotic machine that he can use to take out the uterus and ovaries. My friend told me a couple of months ago that he did a hysterectomy on a woman on a Tuesday and she was cutting the grass on Saturday! I don't know if that is typical or not, but using this machine really cuts down on recovery time.

My mom had a hysterectory about 16 years ago and it took all of 6 weeks to recover. It was really painful.

Hi, Had my done, they made the incision on my c-section scar, wasn't too bad but had to rest for about 3 weeks no heavy lifting etc. I have had past laparoscopic surgery to remove adhensions as I suffered from endometreosis. I was fine after the surgery, they actually told me to move around as the (gas) they said they used is released through your pores. Other then that and not alot of lifting I was fine. I had a hysterectomy last May, and am so happy I did! My doc wasn't sure if she could do a laparascopic, and since I had 2 c-sections previously, I didn't really care, so she cut through the scar. I was pretty much back to the usual routine within 2 weeks (you have to with two small boys!) but she did say that was a bit faster than typical. I won't say I felt 100% within 2 weeks, but it wasn't too much longer after that.

Good luck to you! After nearly 30 years of painful periods and then uterine fibroids, I was glad to be done with it.

ok thanks you all so much. My DH and I were just talking and as you see in my post we have a trip planned exactly 3 weeks after surgery. Any idea of if I will be able to ride anything or do much? I know it is silly to ask but I am a disney freak sooo

It took about 2 weeks for me to get back to normal. I had to have an incision due to tumors. The only draw back was that for the first couple of weeks rolling over in bed was not easy. So I just flipped over to my side. I did find that sitting with a pillow in my lap was more comfortable while healing. I have to agree with other posters, it was the best thing for me.

I had my hysterectomy 4 years ago. The recovery wasn't as bad as I expected. It took a year to be 100% healed. But after a couple weeks I was up and about. I had both my ovaries removed and was 28 at the time of surgery so I have struggled with HRT and menopause, but since you are keeping an ovary that shouldn't be an issue. I also recommend they hystersister site. They were very helpful! Good luck!!
