we moved into our new house last fall, and it has an extensive garden. I'm not sure what to do about the hydrangeas. The heads/stalks from last year are still there. Do I deadhead? cut the stalks? do I leave them alone? fertilize?

TIA!

Cut the stalks, fertilize and leave them to grow. Ask any questions you want here, there are lots of us running around in different places...but a lot of the best answers will come direct from the gardening group.

Hi Tia,

I am by no means an horticultural expert, but am a little familar with hydrangeas. Cut the dried bloom off just above the first "bud". Unless your hydrangea bush is crowding the space available you won't want to prune the stalks as the popular belief is that the blooms flower from the "old" wood. Does this make sense? So whatever stalks grow this year will bloom next year. I hope this helps. This is how my grandparents took care of their hydrangeas on Cape Cod, and you should have seen the size of their bushes!!!

Good Luck!

Carrie
