My husband works for a family member. He does contracting. His boss lost a few jobs recently and has told my husband that since he lost these couple of jobs he now is going to pay him $3/hour less! Has anyone ever heard of something so dumb? Usually people get raises....not get money taken away! So now on top of loosing some hours per week (because there is less work) he is going to get paid $3 less per hour. My husband has worked for this company for 7years. We are related to the owner which is why this is a sticky situation. My husband wants to stay loyal to his boss and hopes things will turn around in the future, which I'm sure they will cuz doing contracting they pick up new jobs all the time, but I think my husband is getting taken advantage of. What do you all think? Have you ever heard of an employer doing this? Thanks

Of course I've heard of it. It's happening a lot these days. People are taking pay cuts to avoid jobs being lost completely. I'm sure it's a bad situation for you but it's not unique these days-unfortunately.

I wish my husband could have had the option of taking a pay cut or fewer hours because he would have. My husband is an ironworker and work has dried up around here. He got laid off instead of being offered a pay cut or fewer hours.

It's better than the alternative. I've had to take 2 pay cuts for my job in the same year. I didn't like it but like I said it was better than the alternative. Oh, and I work for a major corporation. It's happening everywhere, small companies and large ones too.

Wow! (shows how much i know:)) It does stink...he doesnt get paid that much to begin with. I guess I feel he might as well just go get a job at a store as a clerk or something like that. It would be way less physically demanding work for the same pay. Hopefully things come turn around for everyone. Thanks for your advice.

DH has been working for the same company for 20 years, hasn't had a raise in 4 years, and his bonus was $10,000 less this year. I know a lot of people who have taken a 10% pay cut this year.

Fortunately dh and I haven't had to face this (yet), but my sister and best friend both have. My sister is upper management at a Japanese owned company. All salaried employees had to take a 10% paycut. My friend is a teacher in NC. I don't remember the percentage, but they all took a cut. Losing pay is becoming all to common these days.

I certainly hope things do turn around for everyone soon. Good luck. I hope it all works out okay.

With an over 20% unemployment rate here, people would be thrilled if all that happened to them was a pay cut. We had people standing in line for days for the hope of one of the 200 seasonal positions we have each summer.

Yes. My husband works for a university we're lucky that his salary has stayed intact (though there have not been raises for three years now), but many have taken pay cuts. Yeah, they're losing money and it sucks, but the business owners usually look after themselves first. They're not usually the ones taking the pay cuts.

Ten thousand less?

I really need to talk my husband into working for a private company. University pay sucks. Oh, and no bonuses here, save for a free tshirt each year.

At least your husband still gets bonuses... I have no idea what those are. Neither one of us has been companies like that in over 5 years...

I am the employer, DW is the office manger, Brother is the only other employee. including us, we had eight people a year ago.

there is no work. since december I have been averaging about 25% of my salary. and what money we do get at the office, we have to pay the overhead to be eligible for any future work. Insurances (we are required to have 2 million for most small to medium contracts), marketing, office supplies etc...

all because a bunch of suits cashed in on the overinflated housing market. they crushed the world economy!!!!! nice...

Yes it happened to my DH- a 30% pay cut. It sucked. But much better than the alternative. It was a recession excuse cut imho since they've been very busy anyway. He got a little back(so now it's only 25% cut- still sucks) but it's going in the right direction though.

My DH has worked for the same company for almost 23 years. He used to get great raises, but I believe his last one was three years ago. A few months ago he was cut to 30 hours a week and lost his life insurance, comprehensive dental insurance and disability insurance. Had he maintained full-time, he would have been cut 10% instead of 25% and had a week of unpaid furlough.

My salary has not been cut, but I'm not getting a raise this year.

10% paycut for my DH this year and the cost of everything just keeps going up and up and up.

DH's company cut salaries 10% across the board - everyone took a pay cut due to the economic downturn. Plus the company still had to lay off a few employees.

It was quite a hit to our family budget but it is amazing how much less you can live on when you have to.

I work for a co. that has several plants around the country. It has been a year of no raises, lay offs, and shortened work weeks. I don't know if we will lose our Christmas bonus or not. It is the same every year, a $10.00 gift card.

The company that my DH works for has had almost no work this summer. This is a construction company so they make their money in nine months of the year or go without. We are going without. He is the top man on the seniority list sop he at least gets his time but many of the workers are only getting three days a week.

Be glad that your DH has the opportunity to work, so many folks are simply laid off. I know that my DH thinks his company will shut down and since he has worked at the same address for over 38 years he is very nervous.

I took a 40% cut a few years ago.... Left that job.
