OK, this recent hurricane made me wonder - are there still hurricanes in early October?

I believe hurrican season end late October/early November. The majority of hurricanes happen in August and September. While it's possible to have a hurricane in October, it is not as likely as in Aug/Sept. It's sort of like winter in the north. While you can have a blizzard at the beginning of winter or the end of winter, the majority of the big storms happen in the middle of the season.

I believe that the hurricane season doesn't officially end until something like November 1.
September is normally the most active month with the atmosphere changing from summer to autumn.
These two back to back this early is very unusual. Hopefully things will quiet down after Charley.

We were at WDW the last week of September '02 and had terrible rains as a result of a hurricane that had steered its way into the gulf a few days before.

For four days straight, it started raining around 3-4pm and didn't let up until the overnight hours.

Actually the Hurricane season officially runs from June 1st until November 30th. The likelyhood of a hurricane in October is definately less than getting one in August, but it can and will happen. Usually the Gulf of Mexico and Western Caribbean see more activity earlier in the season and the Eastern Caribbean and Atlantic get most of their activity later in the season.

Hurricane season technically runs through November. Historically, however, mid-August to early Sept. is peak time; they are less likely to strike in Florida as you move to the latter part of the season. The worst recorded hurricane strike in Florida hit on Sept. 4, 1935; it's known as the Labor Day Storm. Camille, the worst cat 5 in recent history, hit on August 17th, 1969.

The second chart on this page (scroll down) shows the historical date spread for major storms of the 20th century: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/paststate.html

We were at WDW in mid-Oct 1999 when a hurricane came through. We had our best day in the parks that day because fewer people ventured out. -HM

Unfortunately YES...

Correct that peak season starts from mid-August but it definitely extends well into late September.

We've had quite a few tropical storms, depressions, etc in October as well. Hurricane season doesn't officially end until Dec. 1st although November storms are not as common they have happened.

The first week of October is definitely still pretty much into hurricane season. You just have to keep your eye on the weather.

Fortunately storms like Charley don't happen that often as they are now comparing him to Andrew and that's scary!

Everyone be safe!! Especially on the west coast!

We had to reschedule a trip to Puerto Rico in mid-November, 1999 because of a hurricane! It doesn't happen often, but it does happen!
