Has anyone signed up here to offer? we have a 10 by 10 foot bedroom that my DD isin't in now. I think maybe that's too small..... anyone know anything about this organization? Also thinking SC is too far.....

Yeah they're looking for offers that are closer. But I think everyone wanting to offer space is acting admirably. There are people that have been evac'd pretty far out.

As for the organization, this is just moveon.org lending server space to people who want to offer rooms.

Minnie---people are offering up shelter across the country. The space doesn't matter....you can post at www.craigslist.com . People have been posting on the affected cities.

I posted another one earlier-I will go dig it up.

I live in central florida on the east coast and saw that someone in my area offered up a room. Some of these people will leave New Orleans for good. The variety of choices gives them opportunity for new life in a new area if they had some place to stay to help them get on their feet.

I would love to do this, but I have to admit that I am nervous. What if some scammer poses as a hurricane refugee just to get into people's houses and take advantage of them? I hate to be so cynical, but there are some truly despicable people out there. There were people who claimed they had lost relatives in 9/11 just to get benefits.

As far as scammers--I have seen listings on craigs list that will accept victims--but the victim must have proof of being a Katrina refugee and go through a background check. So you can help people---but protect yourself as well.

My hubby is not here, so I cannot take the risk.

This is incredible. I found one near Seattle that is even willing to pay for people to get bussed to them and live there and re-build. Wow!

I think we're also going to see a lot of church communities all over the USA stepping forward to "adopt a family", helping them relocate to their community, providing an apartment, furnishings, perhaps a car and help finding a job, food, school supplies, etc.

In all honesty, if only every fifth church in the USA did this, it would probably take care of half of the survivors--and they are survivors.

I wish our church could. We had to demolish a building that was condemned due to damage from Jeanne last year.

Jusst put up our extra bedroom for Katrina victims! I feel like I've done something, no matter how small! We could put DS6 in our room and let them have 2 bedrooms. (posted that, too). Will see if we get a response!

I'm afraid to for total strangers, but I think I am going to see if the local shelter near here needs an extra pair of hands this weekend.

I really thought about it, but I'm somewhat ashamed to say I'm not going to do it. We are getting old and this retirement house is pretty small. Mostly I'm just too fearful. We have sent in a donation and will make more - sending plus size undies seems to be a great idea - but I just can't bring myself to bring people into our house. I truly admire those of you who are doing it.

You can always make the offer and do a background check. I just felt like how could I look at an empty bedroom when some single mom and her child may be sleeping on the Interstate? Everyone who needs help wasn't a lawless looter. It's not for everybody, but still trying to keep the thread alive. Some people may not even know.
