I've seen so many neat stories about kindness, compassion and good humor during the storms in Florida.

Loved this little ditty:

The Doubletree's cafe and bar stayed open late into the evening. The cafe printed a Hurricane Charley menu complete with Hail Mary Caesar Salad, Eye of the Storm Chicken, and a Category 2 Ham and Cheese that could have been upgraded to a Category 4.

I admire that there were so many people who kept their cool in the face of these storms. So many people who would probably have rather been home with their own families but they stayed at their posts helping others and making the best of the situation.

Kudos to all those who helped and are helping Florida and her people and businesses get BACK to business.

Have you heard or read other stories about people helping others during the hurricane?

It really is great how those employees who cater to tourists hung in there and continued to work. Just think where all those tourists would be if all the employees fled home. Florida people really know where their bread gets buttered.:D

I have heard that the Disney CM's were out cleaning things up immediately after the storm moved out. That's dedication.:D

This is not a Charley story, but an Opal (Oct 95) one.

DH and I had just moved to Panama City 5 weeks before Opal hit. We had moved into our house only 3 weeks before the storm. DH is a military pilot and he was required to eveacuate one of the planes to a safer location, while I got left behind. Because of my job, I could not evacuate; I was required to stay and be one of the first picking up the mess after the fact.

After I finished with my pre-hurricane stuff, I went home and prepped the house. Once I was done with that, there was nothing to do but wait. Shortly after I sat down to wait, one of me neighbors knocked on my door to see if we were ok. I had not met any of them yet with moving in and starting a new job right away. So in the hours prior to and during Opal, we all banded together as a neighborhood. Several of the men go a hatchet and chopped out the vertical pine that fell, but didn't uproot right next to my front door. The wind was whipping the tree around and it took 5 of us to hold it while a 6th person chopped it out. Then we carried it to a ditch 2 houses down to deposit it safely. After the storm, they helped me get it back out of the ditch for proper disposal.

I really appreciate those folks for taking the time to check on me considering they didn't know me! Almost 10 years later, I still talk with the family that lived directly across from us (and the ones that knocked on my door)
