When we were on the 7 night Eastern Caribbean MAGIC cruise in 2000 we went to an interview program with the Captain. He was asked about Hurricanes and said that with the weather satalites we now know pretty well where the hurricanes are going and unlike a coastal city, the ship can move.
That is why the fine print on your contract will say that the itinerary may be changed at the Captain's discretion--the ship can out run and avoid a hurricane.
Someone asked about the time the MAGIC went through a hurricane and her friend was sick because if it. Our Captain said he could definitely talk about that as he was Captain of that cruise. The choice at that time was to try to go around the hurricane and have rough water, overcast skies for four days and no ports, or go through the edge and have rough seas for four hours.
He was sorry her friend was ill, but if he had tried to go around, she would have had a worse cruise. As it was they had lovely conditions at their ports of call.
We cruise during Hurricane Season as the rates are lower so we can afford to travel more often. The itinerary may be changed, but that gives us some Serendipity.
