I know the months that are typically the worst in terms of hurricanes are still ahead. However, I'm pleasantly surprised that there hasn't already been at least one major storm.

Let's knock on wood now that you've said that out loud. We're heading to Vero Beach in late August (hopefully will see hatching turtles) and really hope the hurricane gods are kind to us.

NOW look what you've gone and done! :rotfl2:

I'll be back in a moment with info on Tropical Storm Chris.

I've felt the same way. Even though I've seen that chart on the Weather Channel that shows June and July as low probability months, I heaved a little sigh of relief yesterday and thought, "Whew!!! At least we made it through June and July without anything major." I hope Chris won't be a problem.

We're leaving for WDW on Sunday for a week - hope the weather gods will be kind!! But the three teenage girls I'm taking (my own daughter and two of her friends) were in WDW either last year or the year before, playing in a volleyball tournament, and they were "trapped" by one of the Florida hurricanes. They said it was easy to be at Disney during the storm, and they wouldn't mind having to deal with one next week- I thinnk they are just making sure I keep the trip going!!!!

The TS Chris thread got moved over to Theme Park Attractions & Strategies :confused3

I never go there and the thread will disappear in a matter of minutes there anyway, so it's not worth the effort to update it. For info on this storm, go to http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Thanks for posting the hurricane info in the past. It was nice to hear if our vacation home is in harms way.

I had to leave Disney 2 years ago When Hurricane Charley was on it's way so I hope this Aug I get to stay my 6 days with no incident. Really I hope we all get spared. We are on the East Coast too. We had Hugo in 1989, The eye right over our house. Not a fun year.

You never know with hurricanes. We've been going to WDW in September on a regular basis since 1975. Only once has a hurricane actually come close to impacting our trip--and that was when the hurricane hit Pa., not Florida!!!

Kimberh, small world, we lost a day to hurricane Charley at Disney as well (we were at the Riverside), and guess what, Mount Pleasant here; we went outside during Hugo's eye for about 20 minutes, then the worse part of the storm came and we hunkered down till morning. Smelled like Christmas (all those pine tree being broken, and all). Pretty scary time and it sure doesn't seem like it has been that long since 1989.

We just joined DVC and one of the many reasons had to do with our friends story of escaping Hurricane Charley from the Tampa Bay area, where we live, to OKW. See... Charley was originally forecast to hit the Tampa Bay area with winds of over 160mph and a storm surge/tide of 14+ ft. That would have put all our homes underwater. So our DVC members evacuated to OKW and were able to check in at 6:00am. Apparently the 7 month window was moot at that point. When I mentioned this to MS they told me that housekeeping worked extra hours to have rooms ready for that very reason. The kicker to the story is that Charley turned inland and actually hit the Orlando area, sparing Tampa Bay but causing extensive damage elsewhere. However, our friends said the power never even went out in their room at OKW. So now we have a place to evacuate to if we get another killer storm coming our way. I know Disney's building were built to withstand hurricane force wind, probably better than most in Florida. Just another good reason to join DVC!!

We were at OKW last year when Wilma came, but other than a half-day spent inside, there was very little inconvenience. We were amazed at how quickly most of WDW was re-opened (shortly after noon that same day). Knowing that we were going during "hurricane season", we made sure to pack extra food/snacks and extra books/cards, etc. :)
A bonus from Wilma was that because of her, the temperatures became downright cold (for October), so we had to go into the shop and buy jackets........and the Vaction Club jackets were half-price :thumbsup2 ! So not only were we "toasty", but we were also walking billboards! :rotfl:
